Jason Licht Now “Bored”

March 21st, 2014

Few general managers — shoot, maybe none — were as busy last week as Bucs GM Jason Licht. The first-year Bucs front office man all but turned around his roster in a handful of days. He was so busy that Licht told CBS Sports’s Jason La Canfora that since the first few days of free agency, he has all but played solitaire on his computer for being “bored.”

It was quite the haul, in all, in a very short period of time, and with some order and normalcy restored at the Bucs training facility, Licht is quick to joke about how mundane things are these days (while readily admitting his work is anything but done).

“Really, I’ve been bored these last few days,” Licht deadpanned, reflecting on a wild beginning to his tenure, and then quickly acknowledging that his team is far from done evaluating free agents, preparing for the draft and mulling trade possibilities as well. “But in reality, part of our plan to do this was to make a lot of changes to upgrade our roster — starters and depth — and we knew that in order to do that it was going to be frantic and frenzied, and we had to have a lot of balls up in the air at the same time. I can’t say it was surprising, no, because that was part of our plan.”

In that article, Licht explains how, after weeks of meetings with Bucs coach Lovie Smith and the football staff at One Buc Palace, he felt he had to ignite a massive renovation in order for the team to be competitive.

And one doesn’t have to read too much between the lines from Licht’s quotes that he and Lovie do not feel backup quarterback Mike Glennon is ready to lead the Bucs as the team’s starting quarterback.

I like this quote A LOT:

“And our roster in the past had been composed of a lot of upper class — for lack of better term — players in terms of compensation. And then a lot of the minimum types. And we felt like the middle class was ignored, and that was a part of our roster we needed to address now.”

    VERY true.

Jason Licht is going to be GM of the year. I’m casting my vote early. I am totally impressed with the way this guy has attacked Free Agency and scored on so many targets. He is aggressive and clearly had a plan coming in and has hit the ground running. We definitely made the right choice here. I can only wish that our offense and defense plays as aggressively and as fearlessly as Jason Licht has been so far!

I find you hilarious Joe! I do not belong to the MOB, but I do like how you create more hits for your blogs. Or is it that you also get bored? 🙂

Licht isn’t the one who is bored now……Dominick, on the other hand???

  5. JGM 2.0 Says:

“Lovie expressed his belief in Josh’s ability to start at the press conference (when McCown was signed), but that does not mean we are giving up whatsoever on Mike Glennon,”

    OOOOOOOH BURN!!!!!!

“Because we believe on our staff that Mike has tremendous upside, and probably the best thing that can happen in for Mike is for Josh to be here and for us to continue to develop Mike’s upside.”

    DAMMMNNNNNNNN!!!!!!

Sounds like he likes Glennon and McCown is just hear to push Glennon.

  6. Theodore Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan – lol

  7. Barry Says:

GM of the year? Let’s wait til after the draft. He drafts Bridgewater (Geno Smith) then we’re wondering in the desert for 5 years.

  8. Macabee Says:

    Tbbf,

Mark Dominik is on Twitter now!

    Handle is @MarkdominikESPN

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Mark Dominick joins a host of ex Bucs on the tube….

Barber, Lynch, Dungy, Gruden, Sapp, Dilfer, Keyshawn, Steve Young & Shaun King (may have missed a couple)

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

Maybe we’ll get some luv from them with Lovie here!!!

  10. Macabee Says:

    Barry,

Ok, then runner-up to GM of the Year. If not then MVP GM at the Bucs. Some way, some how, I’m going to get this guy a medal! lol.

I am with Macabee on Jason Licht being GM of the year.
Jason has almost totally rebuilt our Team, though he has only been here in Tampa for a very short time.
If anyone is a Rockstar, he certainly is.

Meathead has my vote for GM of year already.

While Sammy Watkins might be a good WR – all we saw came from a “special system” in Clemson, in which the WR has a little more time to develop his route. Sammy is a very good WR, but M.Lee from USC is a more traditional NFL WR, simply put: a more athletic M.Williams. I like both players – but want to open eyes, that both aren´t worth it at 7th pick (think about the great pool of WR “resorces”) therefore a different direction would be smarter at draft day:
TE Ebron. Pretty much BestPlayerAvailable at that time AND fills a need, therefore great pick.. same to Anthony Barr.. but Ebron would make more sense becaue:
coupled with another offensive weapon/difference-/play-maker matchup-nighmare like let´s say DeAnthony(heck, he isnt just a simply RB)Thomas.
Boom, Bucs would have a dangerous explosive offense just like that.. very simple.. and opens up soooo many options in terms of playcalling and sheme.. Tedford would get wet pants just thinking about it..
Have a nice day, think about it – GoBucs!!

Hopefully winning in March will translate to wins in December.

I’m so sick of your Glennon bashing on a daily basis, and snide remarks even when it has Nothing to do with the article, that I could PUKE! When I first found this site a couple of years ago it was Such a blessing and I looked forward to reading each and every word. I was a Huge “joebucsfan” Fan… but you have lost me and I am disgusted by your constant droning on and on, trying to enrage anyone who thought Glennon did well. I’ll say this,.. he preformed much better than you have this off season!

  16. Jon Says:

Bored. Really? Go watch some tape. Middle class is what we need? Yeah, that’s what wins championship. Great players make great teams. Find some of them if you are bored.

  17. biff barker Says:

Jon, we need 3-4 great players on each side of the ball. Great players make good ones better. We didn’t have enough good ones last year even though some were compensated like it.
Licht’s point was simple. Revis was overpaid, Dotson was underpaid.
Parity in pay scale makes for a better locker room.

  18. BucFan20 Says:

We don’t have to read between the lines. You do it everyday at least 10 times just to remind us Lovie does not think Glennon is ready to lead the team. But he has not said he never will or will not.

  19. NY Buc Says:

If Licht were to trade away last year’s QB rookie of the year who is earning 3rd round draft pick money for anything less than another team’s 1st round pick I’d assume he’d go from bored to on the hot seat if Glennon went on to duplicate or exceed his rookie campaign with another team. A very hot seat if in addition to Glennon succeeding on another team McCown falters with the Bucs.
