Glennon Not A Starter (Yet) For 2014

Lovie Smith all but promises a quarterback competition come training camp

This may not sit well with the Mike Glennon Mob: Bucs head coach Lovie Smith isn’t exactly pro-Glennon but he’s not exactly anti-Glennon either. Lovie wants the best quarterback to start and that guy may not be on the roster.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Lovie told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times there may be a quarterback who the Bucs feel is the starter of the future.

“I know enough about that draft to know, yeah, there’s someone that would be worthy of the seventh pick because everything is on the board right now,” Smith told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “Whenever you have a chance to get a franchise quarterback, you have to consider that.”

Talking to Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, Lovie reinforced his stance of not yet anointing Glennon as the starter, saying there will be competition for the job from several candidates.

“I like him as one of our quarterbacks right now, but we’re going to have at least four in camp and at least one (veteran) will be in the mix. And then you just let it all play out.”

Joe has to applaud Lovie for his prudent stance. Many of Joe’s readers think Joe wants to run Glennon out of town and that is about as wrong as wrong can be. What Joe does want is production from a quarterback and no, Joe doesn’t think a quarterback — rookie or veteran — who leads his offense to the basement of the NFL is the kind of production winning teams are looking for.

Injuries happen in the NFL and yes, the Bucs had their share on offense. Wouldn’t it be nice, for a change, to see a quarterback lift an offense and make his teammates play better? Is that really such a miserable standard? Maybe Jeff Tedford can work magic with Glennon? Hey, if Glennon can win a quarterback battle and grab the starter’s gig, more power to him.

Joe doesn’t feel like that’s such a heinous request.

How many times can these sites regurgitate the same story/quotes
Glennon has the leg up but like any coach Lovie wants competition as it will bring out the best in a player

  3. Bucsfanman Says:

Yeah, this isn’t news. I’d say it’s a no-brainer. Solid competition for the QB spot will elevate everyone’s game…hopefully.
Joe, your request isn’t heinous by any stretch.

  4. Couch Fan Says:

If we are looking for a QB, I am hoping it’s Bridgewater.

  5. Lue0615 Says:

can we just win some games thats all i have been asking for…

  6. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I think Joe needs to look who is getting shipped out of town, Its not Glennon, its the O-line. Stick with the plan Lovie, Fix the lines! Fix the lines!

  7. d-money Says:

This isn’t earth shattering. of course he’s not going to proclaim Glennon the starter…even if he believed in his mind that Glennon is the guy there would be no benefit to announcing it rigt now anyway…and i don’t think this so called Mike Glennon Mob that you keep talking about would want that either.

There maybe a few people that are hard core Glennon fans but the majority of the people that you call the Mob are just calling for him to be given a fair shot.

  8. lightningbuc Says:

We already know Glennon is out since Lovie isn’t making his new jersey available for sale. This just in…..Johnthan Banks is gone, Connor Barth is gone, Michael Smith is gone, Tim Wright is gone, Donald Penn is gone. Their jerseys are nowhere to be found for purchase either.

  9. Couch Fan Says:

Just read that the Bucs and McCluster will sign a deal soon as the clock hits 4 tomorrow. not sure how true this is but great news if it is.

  10. Kalind Says:

Lightning Buc, I think you’re a little premature. Banks is going nowhere. You can’t have enough corners, and he comes cheap and is a decent corner. There is a 0 % chance of banks leaving

  11. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I just want the best man available under center. Glad Lovie wants to evaluate Glennon further before committing to anything. He’d be an idiot not to do so. If Glennon is the best QB on the roster, he should be able to win the starting job.

  12. lightningbuc Says:

My post was sarcasm due to this morning Joe insinuating Glennon may not be the starter since his jersey is not for sale.

  13. StAugBuc Says:

    @ Kalind:
lightning was mocking the fact there weren’t jerseys available for them, not advocating their departure.

Be careful, you may anger the Donald Penn and Mic Club with comments like that.

  16. Couch Fan Says:

Bennett got his money. Congrats to him. Knew Seattle wouldn’t let him go.

  17. rdbucfan Says:

Bortles reminds me too much of Gosh Freeboy. No thanks.

  18. lurker Says:

too much money for a part time role player

  19. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    lightningbuc and Buc Realist Mob!

  20. gianluca pesole Says:

How many QB Lovie Smith drafted in first round? Zero. Stop the pathetic draft Johnny manziel bust in waiting hipe.

  21. ImissAlstott&Lynch Says:

If they do not fix the problems on the O-line or D-line it will not matter if you have a Peyton-Brady-Elway clone, we will still lose.

  22. Harry Says:

“…Wouldn’t it be nice, for a change, to see a quarterback lift an offense and make his teammates play better?”

Wouldn’t it be nice to be excited about wanting to watch the Bucs QB play on Sunday? I don’t really care who that is, even if I have my preferences. But when the Broncos are on TV, I don’t care anything about them, but I very much look forward to watching Payton play.

I want to have that same feeling when I watch the Bucs QB, and not one of concern about how he might be throwing picks or can he keep up with the scoring of the other team bc he is always throwing check-downs.

  23. ImissAlstott&Lynch Says:

IF they do not fix the O-Line and the D-line it will not matter who is QB we will still lose. MUST fix our line’s.

  24. rdbucfan Says:

Don’t forget the Oil Derrick Brooks and Couch mob. Couch even had an impersonator last year.

  25. ImissAlstott&Lynch Says:

@Harry, Give Glennon more time in the pocket and maybe he can be that QB you could get excited about. Maybe even as excited as “JOE” would be with a life-size blow up doll of Johnny Manziel.

  26. Keirster Says:

Since the pros who grade drafts only get about 20% right at most ( it seems ) I doubt that the beer-swilling, cheetos munching readers of these pages are going to have anything right, including me.

We will all be shocked ( like every year ) when we see who the Bucs draft. I just hope we get great value and no bust with that #7 pick. I actually hope we trade down to get more picks.

    Go Bucs

  27. BoJim Says:

“Wouldn’t it be nice, for a change, to see a quarterback lift an offense and make his teammates play better?”

Kinda like Matty Ice did last year? 😉

  28. gianluca pesole Says:

@Harry i want to be excited to watch the next buca quarterback but not bust in waiting Manziel with the 7 pick in first round. Is not Breese o Russel Wilson but Tim tebow2.

  29. Harry Says:

Michael Bennett has resigned with Seattle! One more down…

  30. Harry Says:

    @missAlstott&Lynch Says:
“…Glennon more time in the pocket and maybe he can be that QB you could get excited about…”

I hope you are right, but personally, I just don’t see it.

  31. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Didn’t realize couch had an imposter!

  32. rdbucfan Says:

I may have been wrong. I remember his posts he went all Jekyll and Hyde last year.

  33. rdbucfan Says:

As far as Glennon making players around him better. I believe Joe thinks Wright has earned a spot even though his franchise QB couldn’t elevate Wrights game with all of his weapons available. It took as Joe would him an average back up 3rd round rookie QB for anyone to notice Wright let alone game plan for him.

  34. sunshine Says:

WHY would any bucs fan want Glennon under center ? Will he ever be a better qb then anyone else in our own division after several seasons. HOW ??? he cant throw to his left on the run , not accurate on the long ball and is not mobile .

  35. Couch Fan Says:

There were a few imposters. But there is only 1 couch! You can find him at the nearest MGM Gathering.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

I can confirm. Couch Fan did have an imposter.

  37. Buccanole Says:

Hopefully all a new head coach and this QB drama nonsense will at least cause HBO to push hard to get us on Hard Knocks. SPOLIER ALERT: Glennon will not end the show as a starter

  38. tickrdr Says:

Many are saying that MG8 led the 32nd ranked offense in the league. But he only played THIRTEEN games. JF5 plus VJ,MW,DM, and the other starters on offense scored a total of 34 points in the first three games. The Bucs team scored a total of 288 points for the season last year. That means that MG8 and VJ plus TW, but minus MW and DM for much of the year; scored 254 points for the last 13 games. Do the same math for the other teams, and you’ll see that MG8 led an offense ranked 25th or 26th in scoring over those last 13 games.

Still not great, but better than 32nd, which many are trying to claim.

Have I mentioned that the Bucs played some pretty good defenses last year in December? These included three playoff teams trying to win their division, and secure a first round bye, vs. our Bucs trying to play out the last of a losing season. (Details posted previously by me).

  39. BamBamBuc Says:

If Glennon IS the starter, Tedford BETTER BE a miracle worker!!!

    Mike Glennon Fans Says
“How many times can these sites regurgitate the same story/quotes…”

I was thinking the same thing. Quotes used several times over the last few weeks. I realize news is slow at the moment, especially when limited to one team, but it’s becoming very obvious.

Are the Bucs not doing interviews in the past week or so for new quotes?

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    rdbucfan Says
“Bortles reminds me too much of Gosh Freeboy. No thanks.”

Considering Josh had nearly all the tools you want in a QB, that doesn’t mean its a bad thing.

Josh was lacking on the short passes and reading defenses. Is Bortles better or worse at those?

  42. BFFL Says:

Glennon would have produced more for the Bears offense than either cutler or McCown.

  43. bigpoppabuc Says:

I’m a Glennon fan and I welcome the competition. And I’ll bet Glennon does as well. If Lovie wants to hold a TRUE QB competition at training camp then the MGM has nothing to worry about. Now if they bring in a vet and draft a QB round one, then they can’t call it a true competition and the MGM will have every right to riot.

  44. Capt. Tim Says:

Last place offense has to concern Lovie.
But last place in 3rd down conversions??

  45. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Joe says: Wouldn’t it be nice, for a change, to see a quarterback lift an offense and make his teammates play better?

sad thing is, Glennon just might of lifted his teammates play last year.

  46. NY Buc Says:

Breaking news at One Bucs Place

A petition was found earlier today with signatures from Tim Wright, Bobby Rainey, Mike James, and Tiquan Underwood stating “Mike Glennon elevated our team and made us play better” with a side note from Vincent Jackson proclaiming “It sure was easier to catch balls thrown over my back shoulder than it was trying to catch balls thrown at my shoe laces from that last #5 guy”

  47. bucrightoff Says:

Tomorrow could be heartbreak hotel for Joe. If the Bucs sign McCown (and I’d say there’s an above average chance it happens), the Johnny dream is dead. I’m not sure about signing McCown, if only because I think a lot of QBs can be successful with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey. No need to make a stupid offer, make a solid offer but only 2 years max.

  48. Capt. Tim Says:

If they sign McCown- it’s to be the starter.
It’s so they have someone driving the Bus, who can win a few games, while their new QB is looking and learning.

If They thought Glennon cable of winning games, they would have been fine with Dan O.

McCown signing tomorrow, means coach has no confidence in Glennon.

  49. bucrightoff Says:

Well if Revis is trading then signing McCown is about as dumb as it gets. Team can go 4-12 very easy with a veteran or a rookie. Cannot believe they are actually stupid enough to trade an elite player who we cannot replace in any conceivable way. Lovie has learned nothing if this happens.

  50. Capt. Tim Says:

    I couldn’t agree more.
