BSPN: Marinelli, Tedford Are Bucs Coordinators

January 2nd, 2014
BSPN reports Rod Marinelli joins Jeff Tedford as new Bucs coordinators.

BSPN reports Rod Marinelli joins Jeff Tedford as new Bucs coordinators.

Now Joe is starting to get excited. The all-knowing ultimate NFL insider Adam Schefter of BSPN just Twittered news that will leave Bucs fans chugging beers deep into the first night of the 2014 calendar year.

It seems former college quarterback guru Jeff Tedford, and former Bears defensive coordinator and former Bucs defensive line coach Rod Marinelli, will indeed be coming to the Bucs to join Lovie Smith, newly hired Bucs coach.

@AdamSchefter: Former Cal coach Jeff Tedford will be Lovie Smith’s OC, and Rod Marinelli will be the Bucs’ defensive coordinator, ESPN is reporting.

The Marinelli move may be the best hire the Bucs have made since Rachel Watson. Joe simply cannot express in coherent words just how good of a hire this is. Just on this and this alone, inking Smith was a great move by Team Glazer.

Joe just wonders how Team Glazer got Jerry Jones to release Marinelli from his contract? Unlike what Bucs fans want to believe, you cannot just cherry-pick coaches who are under contract. Joe is just going to guess that Team Glazer bought out Marinelli’s contract for a hefty piece of change. It will be interesting to see what the ransom was.

Now as far as Tedford, Joe is intrigued but very, very, very cautious. Joe will have much more about Tedford in the morning.

You can bet your rear end Gerald McCoy is going to totally blow up and whatever Da’Quan Bowers has in the tank, Marinelli will squeeze every last drop out of him.

As Hyman Roth famously said in “Godfather II” as his muscle was handing out pieces of birthday cake, “Enjoy!”

  3. PRBucFan Says:

    Right there with you BMA!!!

    Woot woot!

  4. Walter Says:

Our defense is gonna be NASTY!

    BUC BALL IS BACK!!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And the hits just keep on coming!!!

I understand that the Cowboys considered losing Marinelli because of their firing of Kiffin. They probably thought his heart wouldn’t be in the job any longer.

  6. BucYou Says:

We’re starting to look like a professional franchise again. Bout time! Been a while….

  7. Jason Says:

    SUPER excited about this!

  8. deminion Says:

    Well LEGGO

  9. Couch Fan Says:

Certainly an upgrade over Sheridan. And I think anyone can beat out Sully’s run up the gut twice and pass on 3rd and long offense.

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

I hope they keep Ernest Byner at RB coach.

  11. BucNasty!!! Says:

Where going back to the playoffs on defense alone just like the good ol dance now if we can’t produce a middle of the pack offense like 14 or 15 or suttin we goin for the chip drop the house on Bridgewater trade up and make the big push all the chips are in championship or bust

  12. Hank Says:

Love the DC hire. Will wait & see on the rest.

  13. adambomb418 Says:

I love the idea of Marinelli back in pewter. Frazier still is a good backup plan!

  14. Macabee Says:

I can tell you now that the Bucs have sent a shudder thru the Front Offices of the NFC-South. It’s payback time!

  15. BucsFanInAZ Says:

I can honestly say I can’t remember I was this excited to be a Bucs fan. What a great way to bring in the New Year!

Now I know we have a lot of work to do to win some games, but that also has me incredibly excited. We will have an offseason that will re-shape this team into one that will win.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m tired of swinging and missing on DEs in the draft. PLEASE snag a DE in Free Agency that can start opposite of Clayborn. As a huge UCLA fan, I will completely retract this statement if we can draft Anthony Barr.

Add in a solid #2 or #3 corner to go with Revis and Banks, and man that defense is wicked.

I guess the next order of business for the Bucs would be to actually release our current OC and DC, right?

  16. BucYou Says:

    Small steps……..

  17. richmondtxbucsfan Says:

Who is making all these moves though? We either have a bad ass gm already in place or the glazers dont need a gm and go all jerry jones on us! Either way, exciting times! What a way to kick this year off!

  18. Eric Says:

    Now we’re finally talking.

As Brooks tweeted, words can’t describe how much I like this hire.

  19. Ricky Bobby Says:

@Walter: Hopefully, not nasty as is “sucks so bad I’ve never seen a worse defense in my life” kinda nasty…

  20. BigMacAttack Says:

This is how you sell tickets. At least I’m already in.

What a turnaround. Went from manic depression to complete euphoria almost over night.

Shout out to Joel and Bryan Glazer! Great job guys!

    Mucho Apprecianado!

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

Lovie is all over it already. Not wasting any time.

  22. PhantomVash808 Says:

Yes the Glazers are giving the fans a late Christmas present.

  23. BucNasty!!! Says:

Word bma total night and day overnight thing and it all thanks to u glazers. If you read this things (which I secretly think u do) I just want to say thank you and that’s the most honest heartfelt thank you j could muster you guys truly rock and I don’t care what any1 says your just as committed with the bucs as you are with man u and again thanks guys

  24. Luther Says:

@Macabee I love the hires but we aren’t scaring anyone until we have a QB. I like the smarts and hard work of Glennon but we need more.

  25. DMAD1 Says:

It’s been 10 long long long years and if we can get back into the playoffs damn! I’ll be happy as hell

  26. DMAD1 Says:

With this lineup if it’s true I’ll be happy as hell just as long as you get into the playoffs

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Luther

    I’ll trust Tedford’s decision on Glennon….

  28. Josh P Says:

Love the Lovie and Marinelli highers, but not sold on the teford higher, Other than Rodgers what QB’s has he mentored that has successful NFL careers? and Cal is not really known as an OFF juggernaut…. but either way I’m pretty stoked right now!!!!! Finally buc ball is back in town.

  29. JamesrunningWilder Says:

Marinelli becoming a DC is considered a Promotion from D-Line Coach at Dallas, not a Lateral Move. I suppose that We couldn’t have given up Too Much… Especially after the a Horrendous Season the Dallas Defense just had.

  30. Keith Says:

I just ran around my house jumping for joy over this news! Watch out NFC South! Here come them BUCS!

  31. lurker Says:

damn you buc fan are like seniors that are rampant in florida…probably are.

scared of the unfamiliar and fall back on what is known.

glazers jumped the shark on this. need to interview more than one candidate.

  32. Vincente Says:

The panthers, saints, and falcons response to this…..”oh shit” haha let’s get this train Rollin! I have a damn good feelin about this!!!

  33. Gus Says:

@Luther I think he could excel in this scheme. Still think we need to bring in competition though.

  34. ShiverMeTimbers Says:

    Joe,

Maybe I’m really glib but what makes you so excited about Marinelli? He was an excellent coach while in TB. Obviously Detroit was a struggle. From what I remember though Chicago only had an above average D while Marinelli was coordinator there. Obviously Dallas’ D this year is probably making their fans wish for their own set of Tums. I’m not seeing what makes him a lights out acquisition other than TB hoping we’re gonna party like it’s 1999 again.

  35. SSG Mike Says:

Was iffy on Lovie because we need some offense and he is a Defensive coach but when they add in Tedford and Marinelli, Nice. Things are finally changing for the Better for our Beloved Bucs. Excited to see what these guys have in store with the draft coming up and us having a nice pick. Excited! Buc-Ball is coming back to Tampa!

  36. Gus Says:

@lurker not when you find the right guy. Why waste time? They did that last time and thats how they ended up with Schiano…..

  37. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Josh P

Tedford coached them in College….he wasn’t responsible for their coaching in the NFL. He got them to a position to where they were drafted very high. What else could he do after that….coach them via text?

  38. lurker Says:

no…they got jilted again and had to scramble for schiano. chip the dip got cold feet and lied.

    lol…bucball only won 1 superbowl!..eli manning has won 2

  39. DCBUCSFAN Says:

After this nonsense we have had to endure under Schiano, I’m in for any decision Lovie makes! Restoring my season tix tomorrow that I cancelled back in October!

  40. lurker Says:

Tedford also groomed David Carr and Joey Harrington. ouch

need fresh blood, not retreads. lovie may do well, especially as this is his 2nd stint as hc, and there is a history of that happening. but his nepotism might hold this team back.

  41. k_bassuka Says:

Finally some good NFL coaches… the future looks bright…

  42. Macabee Says:

    Luther,

You’re right. You see, It’s like preparing for a Mike Tyson fight. There is the pre-fight activities and there’s the actual fight. I’m in the pre-fight now, don’t spoil it for me. The fight may be a lot more difficult! lol

  43. lurker Says:

what has marinelli done? I might have missed it. in Detroit he did _________? in dallas he did ____________?

  44. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Hmmm….Lovie (Howell) duel hatted as both HC and GM? Not sure I like the sound of that. This per John Clayton from BSPN.

  45. ryan Says:

“Tedford also groomed David Carr and Joey Harrington. ouch”

ouch? you must be trolling because the last I checked, both those guys were good college players under him

  46. lurker Says:

“As a coach, Rivera was the defensive coordinator for the 2006 Chicago Bears, who won the National Football Conference championship and competed in Super Bowl XLI.”

    Wikipedia

  47. flumunda cheese Says:

With these hires, think we have a great chance at winning the 1998 super bowl.

  48. Chris Says:

is @Lurker just a trolling Giants fan?

  49. CJO Says:

    BEST. NEW YEARS. EVER.

  50. Gt40bear Says:

Really like the Lovie hire, LOVE the Marinelli hire (if it’s true), meh to cautious on the Tedford hire. Norv is going to be available, why not go after him? Wasn’t his brother Ron one of Lovie’s OCs in Chitown? Proven good to excellent OC. Still, things looking way up in Tampa Bay!

  51. lurker Says:

i’m just showing the players that didn’t do well in the nfl that he coached. you cannot give him credit for the other qb’s that did do well in the nfl, because he didn’t coach them in the nfl.

  52. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Ryan

Right…these guys are missing the point on Tedford…..he was a college coach that developed many high draft pick QBs….how they turned out in the NFL is not on him….
He did his job & did it very well.
I trust him a lot more than Schiano, Sullivan & Dominick on Glennon…if he gives the OK on Glennon…I’ll support his decision.

  53. lurker Says:

    @ chris

new here? yeah, i’m a giants fan…lmao (sarcasm)

how was bucball so great that they only won 1 superbowl? ahh the glory years. they were nice, but come on.

  54. orlandobucsfan Says:

Wow today is a great start to a great buccaneers year. I can’t wait to see our defense!!! I hope we do a lot with the offense but we have way more pieces then the super bowl team had on offense.

  55. lurker Says:

I like the tedford choice more than the marinelli choice.

  56. buccinfan Says:

@lurker one example…. Rod marinelli took that de selvie that we cut earlier this seaon, look like the end we wish we had

  57. ronco Says:

@lurker – Marinelli as DC for the Bears from 2010-2012 had them ranked 3rd, 5th and 1st in takeaways. Was also ranked 4th, 14th and 3rd in points against.

  58. You Go Joe Says:

Marinelli pulled out duck tape and gorilla glue and had a great d line in Dallas. Slevie, that guy Schiano cut before the start of the season 7 sacks. The man can make the use of talent and work well with it. You for sure can’t say that with sheridan or the past coaches. So look up the difference line for the Bears and last year Cowboys. Defensively we are going in a very good direction.

  59. zam Says:

This team is going to be sooooooo good! What a long 8 months to wait!

  60. PRBucFan Says:

We can always depend on the negative nancy to never be pleased. šŸ˜‰

  61. You Go Joe Says:

@ProFootballZone he brought up great points.

Any fantasy football player knows last year (2012) the Bears defense was ridiculously good at pick six and turn overs. Ridiculous

  62. ronco Says:

@lurker – Also, how was the Bears defense the 3 yrs before Marinelli? 16th, 16th and 21st in points against. Then they finished 30th this season after he was gone.

  63. You Go Joe Says:

    Whoops at @roco

    Dam tablet uses auto correct.

  64. Warthog Says:

    Marinelli, nice move.

As for Tedford, I’m confused. I keep reading articles where he is praised for developing David Carr, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington and Kyle Boller.

    Ummmm….

  65. lurker Says:

what negative? I asked for and got answers. 1/2 the people here hated retreads before, but if it is linked to the “glory years” it is ok. lol

hell, I even read that people want dungy as gm…seriously?

anyways…I wanted new oc and dc and figured if schiano stayed, they would have been fired.

  66. lurker Says:

if nothing else, there will be an increase in season ticket sales by linking to the “glory years” for all the seniors. glazers were tired of an empty stadium. and it might pay off on the field too.

  67. Demetrios Liaros Says:

Credibility and relevance have returned to this franchise.

  68. TonyBuc Says:

    Joe,
If I’m not mistaken because the marinelli was the defensive line coach the bucs don’t have to buy out his contract if it was a lateral move yea they probably would have to, it’s considered a promotion, like if OC wanted to be a head coach there’s nothing that team could do about it. I could be wrong though, not saying you are!

  69. Alexstotle Says:

Lurker is a Douche with no life

  70. Dan Says:

    Joe,

Could it be that Rod Marinelli is going to be Defensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach? Does adding the Assistant Head Coach title make it so that Jerry would have to let him out of contract unless Jerry wanted to give him that title? Also given Marinelli’s stature as a coach, could his agent have negotiated a stipulation in his contract that gives him an out clause to become a Defensive Coordinator? I know assistants usually don’t have that kind of leverage, but maybe his agent was able to get the Cowboys to agree. I would think Marinelli and his agent were very careful in negotiating his contract after what he endured in Tampa. And maybe the out clause was only for Lovie Smith, because If Cowboys didn’t agree Rod could have said I’m just going to sit out a year then because I’m confident Lovie will have a job next year and I’ll be getting the call. If I’m Jerry and I think Rod is really that good I’d rather have him for one year than not at all.

  71. lurker Says:

    grow some balls boy…

  72. lurker Says:

so who is going to be the talent evaluator here now? lovie?

  73. Joe Says:

Maybe Iā€™m really glib but what makes you so excited about Marinelli?

If there is a better defensive line coach in football, Joe has not heard of him.

Players freaking worship this guy. Just look how the old Bucs reacted. Just look how the current Bucs defensive players are doing cartwheels.

The only problem with the Bucs defense is sacking the quarterback. That is Marinelli’s specialty.

  74. lurker Says:

this should be a better coaching staff than we have had since gruden was fired. is lovie the gm too, as I had read? I am interested in who will draft and develop talent.

  75. Buc1987 Says:

    Maybe they draft Clowney now?

  76. Buc1987 Says:

Things are moving so quickly I expect the Bucs to be fully staffed by the time the suns comes up.

  77. PRBucFan Says:

Well GM’s don’t develop talent lol

But as of now none of us officially know anything more than you do

  78. Couch Fan Says:

There’s a rumor that Lovie will be both HC/GM.

  79. Capt. Tim Says:

Fantastic hires! Great news for all Buc fans. This will be a well coached team, that will bring the heat in defense!!

Not a bad word or thought about this!!

Way to go team Glazer!! You guys nailed it!
Thank you for a great Start to the New Year!!

  80. Eric Says:

    Well said Joe.

Especially combined with Lovie Smith who is a great defensive coach in his own right.

I heard Urlacker state this week that he would not have retired if Lovie hadnt been fired. And Hester mentioned he’d like to follow Lovie if he got a job.

Haven’t found any player to say a negative thing about Smith, they seem to love playing for the guy.

One thing for sure, if you were going into Chicago to play against Lovie’s team you were in for one hell of a fight.

  81. Broy3434 Says:

Nobody here should entertain lurker. Including you joe. Any true Bucs fan is estatic about these hirings. If not ur just a greedy true Bucs fan. For Marinelli he developed Warren Sapp McFarland Simeon and soooo many more. Made Dallas dline jobs look easy. For the O Coordinaor- if this is the genius that developed or atleast helped Rodgers footwork become what it is today I’m sure he will be fine. Bucs are relevant again and instead of Rutgers players joining our coach it’ll be nfl players. Let’s go bucs

  82. delson Says:

The bucs d line cant be any worse than it was last year. Marinelli will be an upgrade to our pass rush. I believe in the talent that we do have on our roster so getting an ex d line coach was big. Heres to lesser stunts n mccoys dominance in 2014. Im guessing we will be drafting a thorough bred speed rusher. The only hire i would choose differently is a oc with nfl experience. First round pick tho qb o line or d line would be cool. Cant wait to see the finished product

  83. BucsfaninChina Says:

Ok so where is the Blake bortles thread? Correct me if I’m wrong but he just smacked up a top 5 team.

  84. BucsfaninChina Says:

    Urlacher = Lavonte
    Tillman = Revis

With the addition of either Bottles or Barr we will be just dandy, folks.

  85. DallasBuc Says:

Joe- Love the Godfather reference…enjoy I will. The most bleak outlook to an offseason as far back as a 35 yr old buc fan that I can remember is about as exciting as it was when Gruden was hired!
    Oh..go UCF!!!

  86. lurker Says:

bortles wasn’t as impressive as mr. manziel

  87. trubucfan22 Says:

I dont know why people are down on tedford… he made the likes of david carr look like a first overall draft pick! Carr is well known for being a bad quarterback yet tedfords offense made him into the best qb in the country.

I want a new qb more than anyone, but with tedfords track record of making crap qbs look like gods, he might even make glennon into a decent qb.

  88. lurker Says:

does lovie have a history of developing the talent in Chicago? and if he is hc/gm as has been rumored, than the gm will develop the talent, which is what I posted. doh…

  89. BucsfaninChina Says:

Bortles vs Manziel poll, Joes. Make it happen.

  90. BucsfaninChina Says:

Carr is a mistake in the making. Fresno did not run anything even similar to a pro style offense. Either gonna be manziel or bottles, tedford is going to be qb whisperer for one of the two.

  91. Andrew 1 Says:

Really really like the Marenelli hire. Bortles won’t be there when we pick.

  92. biggun Says:

Tedford can coach up Aaron’s Rodgers little bro…. he’s still on our team right?

  93. lurker Says:

    via jason la canfora tweets:

    Jason La Canfora ā€@JasonLaCanfora 5h
Some rumblings around the league former Bears GM Jerry Angelo – a former Buc exec as well – might be a part of Team Lovie in Tampa

    Jason La Canfora ā€@JasonLaCanfora 5h
Will be interesting to see who runs personnel in Tampa. As I reported early this week, Lovie very close to KC exec Chris Ballard …

  94. PRBucFan Says:

Part of the team maybe but not GM

  95. Architek Says:

    Let’s roll guys!!!

No more circling the calendar when Tampa is on the schedule.

  96. White Tiger Says:

HOPE Rod is coming! Now the only thing missing from this wrecking-crew in waiting is a Simeon Rice type off the end – you know, like that Jadeveon Clowney kid…

…and on offense, maybe the Bortels kid from UCF (also maybe better find another 83, not sure they keep him)?

…as for Tedford, never been a fan.

  97. Brandon Says:

Love Rod coming back… not sure about Tedford… but I will say this. His offense will only be as good as the QB running it. There are 5 legit franchise-type QBs in the draft. Bridgewater, Bortles, Hundley, Manziel, Carr as well as upgrades from Glennon in round 2 like Mettenberger, McCarron, Brett Smith (check this guy out from Wyoming-a lot like Johnny Football).

Great QBs make defensive coaches look good. Peyton and Dungy and Fox, Rivera with Newton, Mike Smith with Ryan, that Brady guy with the Belichick guy…. if we get the QB we will succeed.
