Mike Glennon’s Future With The Bucs

November 16th, 2013

The Bucs may not show Johnny Football any love if they decide Mike Glennon is the future face of the franchise.

Joe has nothing against Mike Glennon. He looks right now to be a serviceable if not capable backup.

Glennon has shown Joe little that he could put a team on his back and lead them to a playoff berth, much less a Super Bowl run. Maybe Joe isn’t watching the same games as the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo and the Custodian of Canton, eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune. Both think Glennon has played well enough thus far that it is debatable whether the Bucs draft a quarterback next spring.

The topic of GLennon was discussed when Kaufman made his weekly appearance with Russo on the show that bears his name, “Mad Dog Unleashed” heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo: I will tell you right now! If Glennon turns out to be a pretty good quarterback – Freeman has been a bust – now if Glennon turns out to be a pretty good quarterback, in these next seven or eight games, you have to give [Bucs commander Greg Schiano] credit for having the guts to make that move. I like what I see out of Glennon. He’s not bad, you know that Ira? He’s big and he’s got a good arm. He [views] the field, he’s sure, he can move a little bit. He is serviceable as far as his movement is concerned. He’s done a nice job for [the Bucs] in these last four or five games, you know?

eye-RAH! Kaufman: There’s no question, there’s no question. He’s been better than advertised, better than I anticipated. I think the biggest question going forward along with Schiano’s status is if you are a Bucs fan, Chris, is has Glennon shown enough or will he over the next seven games that they don’t have to use that top-three pick on a quarterback? That’s a big, big point and issue going forward with this franchise.

If the Bucs land a top-three pick it’s almost criminal to not draft a franchise quarterback. Hell, if Joe is sitting in Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik’s seat next spring, he’d trade down a little (just a little), stock up on some draft picks, land Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews or Michigan tackle Taylor Lewan, then trade back up into the late first round and land Johnny Football.

Then go out and enjoy a cognac and fire up a cigar from Ybor City and admire the work.

Joe is willing to lay cash if Bucs commander Greg Schiano is granted a mulligan by Team Glazer, survives and returns next year, then the Bucs will not draft a quarterback. Glennon is Schiano’s guy. Plain and simple.

I think Mike Glennon can be an average starter in the league. But really, you can’t just shrug off a rare talent like Manziel. I agree, if we have a chance to grab him we need to do it.

  2. Lev Says:

If Johnny football were to come to the bucs, every home game for the next 3-4 years will be sold out. Plus if he gets hurt, Glennon has shown he can play. This could work.

  3. Buc []_[] Says:

    If we do go QB

Manziel should not be our pick

  4. Harry Says:

Sometimes, when i read things like this, I wonder what planet these “experts” live on. did Mad Dog not see how horrific Free was at QB? How does one “… have to give [Bucs commander Greg Schiano] credit for having the guts to make that move.”??? That to me was a no-brainer. The only thing I would give Schiano credit for is I suspect ah had some input with Dom on picking Glennon (which really is a great pick so far).

    @joe:
“If the Bucs land a top-three pick it’s almost criminal to not draft a franchise quarterback.” I totally completely agree, but not sure I would trade down at all. I want the best f-ing Franchise QB the Bucs can get!!!

  5. cpbenett Says:

I said the same scenario. This year, either line needs to be addressed. Either Clowney or Matthews should be our first pick, hands down. Now that the “D” is being allowed to free range it a bit, I think that will let us know what type of pass rushers we actually have, and whether or not Clowney is really necessary.I feel if we pass on Manziel, that we will regret it. He just has all those little intangibles and “moxie” (for lack of a better term) than all of the other QB’s coming out.

  6. BucsFan68 Says:

I hope the Bucs have a new coach next year

  7. Skelly Says:

If Manziel comes here I hope he brings his 2 friends with him to Tampa! Go Bucs tomorrow!

  8. Beeric Says:

Don’t risk trading down and hoping Manziel will be there late in the first. He won’t be.

  9. Jerry Says:

People just dont like Glennon because he’s Schiano’s pick. I understand the fans and the media hate Schiano with a burning passion. But we don’t see that hatred in any form from the players. The players are still going out there and playing hard in every game.

  10. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I hope the Bucs have a new GM next year

  11. WalkdaPlank Says:

Just got back from the Texas vs. Oklahoma State game. I think it’s safe to say that Casey McCoy doesn’t have a future with the Bucs, he’s not like his brother Colt. Neither is Jaxon Shipley to Jordan Shipley. Then I saw that Georgia had an amazing 4th quarter comeback but lost on the last play of the game because of a lucky tip pass. What a heartbreaker that must have been. Reminded me of how the Bucs lost to Seattle. Somebody said earlier that Aaron Murray is super overrated, not exactly sure how that’s true, out of all the draft eligible QB’s he gets talked about the least despite how good he’s been with a team of 3rd and 4th string WR’s and RB’s due to injuries. The guy is breaking records, and left the field with the lead late in the Auburn game only to lose on a lucky 4th and 18 play. And Auburn is a damn good team, he already beat Mettenberger’s LSU and Clowney’s South Carolina.

  12. Andrew 1 Says:

I saw that game plank… just wow. I was getting ready to come on this post and vouch for Murray after a 17 point comeback win, if it weren’t for that miracle play lol. I still think we should draft Arron Murray though… that kid is a warrior. even after that miracle play he still almost won the game, and thats with a beat up offense around him.

  13. WalkdaPlank Says:

So many people are sleeping on Murray IMO. He’s put up better numbers than Stafford, with an offense half as good. Stafford had two years with A.J Green and Knowshon Moreno and couldn’t even make it to the championship game. He’ll probably fall quite a few spots in the draft, which means the Bucs can win a few more games and still get him. With a RB like Doug Martin and WR’s like Mike and VJax I believe Murray would be very successful in Tampa Bay, plus he’s mobile, not Johnny Manziel mobile but he no stranger to throwing or running outside the pocket.

  14. Jordan Says:

Joe – Please check Alex Smith vs Mike Glennon stats for this season. I believe the only conclusions one could come away with are: 1. There are many ways to construct a winning team 2. Alex Smith and the Chiefs are lucky 3. Mike Glennon and the Bucs are unlucky. If you can find a better explanation as to why Glennon-type numbers makes one team 9-0, but makes another team 1-5, then I would like to hear your explanation.

  15. yar Says:

Gotta take Clowney if he’s there. It’s getting more obvious that the running college QB only works for a year or so or they get hurt in the NFL. The QB’s that win the SB are pocket passers. Don’t need Manziel or any of those type of QB’s. I’ll take Glennon over any of them. Just look at who has won the SB the last few years Flacco, Eli, Peyton, Brady, Big Ben, Brees this is the type of QB that works in the NFL.

  16. dee Says:

I think we should draft sammy watkins in the first round we need a guy to blow the top off the d and vjax is getting older.Draft murray in the second round.

  17. dee Says:

Sammy watkins in the first round Murray in the second.

  18. waterboy Says:

Manziel looks like a great college QB but I’d honestly be very surprised if he can make it at the pro-level.

  19. oldfart44 Says:

How about trading Doug Martin? If the O line keeps blocking well any back will do to eat up the clock. I feel the depth is very adequate.

  20. Superfriend Says:

I hope the Bucs realist finds a different team. I know I want a GM that drafts three pro bowl players in 2012. McCoy…too and trades for revis.

  21. WalkdaPlank Says:

Trading Martin would be a bad move. The O-line has not been able to block well at all except for the past two games. Donald Penn is past his prime, so too is Davin Joseph. When is Carl Nicks ever gonna be HEALTHY? I find it weird that the Bucs were able to completely miss his bad case of turf toe/staph infection/MRSA whatever you wanna call it because he has been having problems with it since the Vikings game last season. Did the Saints know about it? Did it just so happen to coincidentally occur after he signed with us? Either way, it looks like the Bucs threw away millions of dollars for damaged goods. I don’t even know what to make of Ted Larsen. But I like Jeremy Zuttah and ever since Jamon Meredith has been starting at LG the entire O-Line has been playing better.

But trading Martin is not the answer, especially when we don’t even have a sure-thing replacement for him. Yeah, Mike James was lighting it up for 1 game before breaking his ankle. Brian Leonard is a good 3rd down back, but not a “3 down back”. Bobby Rainey was a nobody until Monday night, there’s a reason he went undrafted two years ago but I am interested to see how well he does against the Falcons. And Jeff Demps is constantly on the fence about playing football full-time because he might get injured and it’ll effect his Olympic career. Well guess what, he decided to play some ball and what happened? He got injured. Who’d a thunk it?

  22. Walter Says:

Johnny Manziel will bust in the NFL.

  23. Joe Says:

If you can find a better explanation as to why Glennon-type numbers makes one team 9-0

A suffocating defense and an offense that has a myriad of weapons with a strong offensive line.

Other than that, the Bucs and the Chiefs are quite similar.

  24. nate Says:

We have to take clowney hes best athlete in 10 years..

  25. Bucsqb12 Says:

Bucs having a top 3 pick!????? Sorry, I’ve been a Bucs fan too long to buy into that BS! The Bucs broke our hearts going 0-8 and we all feel like a Bridgewater, Clowney or a Mathews is owed to us. Sorry Bucs fans…ain’t happening. The Bucs are about to break our hearts again by rattling off another 5-6 wins in the second half. I know how this Bucs story goes and we will be picking @ 10 th in the 2014 draft. Go Bucs!!

  26. MadMax Says:

Tom Brady was a 6th round pick, Kurt Warner went undrafted….and I could go on about other players in positions that NOBODY seen them coming into until they were showing results…..

But Im telling you Joe, Glennon could be our “Franchise” QB…and at worst, he’ll be a high quality BU if we draft a QB with our first (which would be stupid IMO).

Mike Glennon is worthy of MY decision to move PAST a QB pick in the 1st and 2nd. He’s a rookie who is developing nicely into this FN MESS that he was thrown into!!

And since the QB position is so deep….trade down our pick if we cant land Matthews!

  27. MadMax Says:

really? I havent even posted here for the last 2 weeks and my posts arent allowed now?

    umm, alright….

  28. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

“Hell, if Joe is sitting in Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik’s seat next spring”

If there’s any sanity in the world, you’ll be sitting next to him at Hooter’s next spring.

  29. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

And, besides the questions about his ability to thrive in the pros, you really think Schiano would want Manziel around? Schiano wants a by the books guy. Manziel is more a sandlot type. He’s a wildcard. I just don’t see it. We already know Dominick is the bottom. He won’t cross Schiano.

  30. SeanyMac in SC Says:

No, no, no to Johny”Spoiled Rotten” Football. He will be an NFL bust! Just can’t see that personality working well in a pro locker room.

I’ll take any of his WR’s. They are the ones that recognize busted plays and turn them in to positive yards.

  31. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I want a QB taken in the first round this spring, but I don’t want “Johnny Football”. If Schiano is here, neither will he.

So far as Glennon being “Schiano’s guy”? I don’t think so.

I am of the firm belief that had he been allowed to, Schiano would have take a QB in the first round his first year with the Bucs. Both Dominick and the Glazers were sold on Freeman. Freeman went on to break records that year, even with the break down over 4 games. Plus we didn’t have a first rounder.

With the inability to draft a first round QB, and needing solid depth at the position, Schiano was permitted to draft Glennon…as a backup. That’s all he was ever intended to be.

That’s why I believe the Glazers will not fire Schiano. They’ve tied his hands in regard to QB. This is the year he gets one. He’ll remain and Glennon may start next year as the #1 but our first rounder will ease into the role.

Joe would you please did my post out of the spam filter?

  34. Mcruzer Says:

Bucsqb12 are you freaking kidding me? “Break our hearts by winning”. I know the ultimate goal is winning the Super Bowl but I watch every game every single season and I have never once wanted a loss.

  35. Tackleblockwin Says:

    Joe,
I am going to assume that if the Bucs take Manziel in the 1st rd., Schiano is no longer coaching this team. Just can’t see Schiano drafting Manziel.

  36. nate Says:

Clowney is amazing if we get him we will have the best defense in the nfl… you all realize that 95 percent of all play run against south carolina is to the opposite side of clowney.. the guy is amazing

  37. Greg Says:

Manziel won’t be there in the bottom of the first round, he’ll be picked well before then. Doesn’t matter, the Bucs will win 4 or 5 more games, the Glazers will keep Schiano for another year, and we’ll be screwed draft position-wise. So yes, I’m a shitty fan because I do hope we don’t win another game this year so we can finally be rid of Schiano and Dominick, and have a top draft pick for the next HC and GM to choose with.

  38. JSmalls Says:

The only stat in football that matters anymore is explosive plays. Weather it’s Offense, Defense or Special Teams, the team with more explosive plays usually wins. I like Glennon but if in the next several games I don’t see an increase in explosive plays then we must draft a QB.

Completion % is important because it means you’re completing short to intermidiate passes but if you cannot connect on explosive pass plays down the field it just extends play count which I think can hurt most of the time. Good offenses score fast which lowers the opportunity for bad plays, penalties and turnovers.

Anyone notice how we usually stall after dink and dunk drives as we’re approaching the red zone? The defenses are too good for those drives and while clock sustaining drives in the last 7 min of a game are important, other than that they’re useless.

  39. Couch Fan Says:

There have been very few rookies that have come along and put the team on there back. Very very few. It just doesn’t happen and it’s ashame people have such ridiculously high expectations.

NO QB we draft will be able to do that next year. None. But I guarantee you we wont hear that excuse if we do draft one in the first round. He’ll have 5 years to prove how crappy he is and some of you will defend him til your blue in the face.

Really sad that Glennon can’t get a fair shot here with most fans. He’s played very well for a rookie. Not turning the ball over and playing smart football is exactly what you want.
