“This Is A Fast Defense”

October 8th, 2013

DeSean Jackson vs. Darrelle Revis is one of the great subplots of Sunday’s game. The Bucs should have the young legs throughout their defense to give Chip Kelly and friends fits.

How the Eagles’ fast-paced, high-octane offense matches up with the Bucs’ talented and speedy defense will be fun to watch Sunday. Joe’s looking forward to it.

Fortunately for the Bucs, Michael Vick is not expected to start because of a bad hamstring, giving way to Bucs-killer backup Nick Foles, who played more than a half in the Eagles’ road win against the Giants on Sunday.

Philadelphia offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur took to the podium in Eagles land this afternoon and talked about how the Bucs defense is nothing like the Giants defense the Eagles torched for 36 points.

“This is a fast [Bucs] defense that runs around, so it’ll be important to us to be able to block movement,” Shurmur said.

Shurmur also went on to say that receivers winning 1-on-1 on the outside will be key. Joe surely believes DeSean Jackson vs. Darrelle Revis should be a matchup that shouldn’t let Jackson go for seven catches for 132 yards like he did against the Giants.

“That reputation [Revis] has as a shutdown corner, you know, you see that on tape now,” Shurmur said. ” I don’t know if he’s all the way back [healthy], but he’s playing at a very high level.”

Interestingly, Shurmur said the Eagles “won’t change how we function running or throwing” even with Vick out of the lineup. Joe finds that hard to believe, but the Eagles basically did just that last Sunday.

Will be interesting to see how much Zone coverage will be used by Coach Perkins.

  2. Robbie_G Says:

See what KC did? they shut Meshawn down. Put Revis on him, and their other receivers are terrible. ONLY thing that worries me is their TE’s. As for the Offense, open it up there coach. Once again, PLEASE beat the damn Pigeons, these @$$hole fans here in Philly are terrible.

  3. Illuminati Says:

I’m more concerned with our own offense. Up to now, all the teams we’ve faced have defenses that are ranked in the top half of the league. If we can’t generate at least 24 offensive points against Philadelphia’s 31st-ranked D, then we have serious problems.

  4. Splengo Says:

Now, this is a game that we should win coming off of a bye. So I’m picking the Bucs 24-21. The football goods are trying to help, Julio jones may be lost for the season looking ahead to the Falcons. We are getting our chances, we just need to capitalize. Go Bucs!

  5. Mike Says:

I see it coming Illuminati! After 2day…… I really do feel good things coming 2 us fans! Our D can get it done, our O has been a problem! I really do believe this shit is about 2 sail! I could be wrong, but I do believe I’m right on this one

  6. bucrightoff Says:

This is a great test for the defense. Another terrific performance is asking a lot but if they deliver its looking like we have an elite defense again. Now about that offense…

  7. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

Here is a little tid bit I picked up on another site from an article dealing with Jadaveon Clowney – “The most productive pass rusher according to Pro Football Focus metrics (subscription required to view premium stats) through four weeks in the NFL is Seattle’s Michael Bennett.” Blech.

  8. Tampabaybuctfan Says:

Our defense will hold Phil to a reasonable number of points….21 or under….the key is our offense scoring 7 instead of 3.
Taking Vick out eliminates one huge threat. We desperately need a pass rush this week.

  9. MadMax Says:

Well, I’ll be watching for our D….and now I can add I’ll be watching for “Glennon” too. But make no mistake, if HC/DC/OC dont get their stuff together and make some changes, its going to be another ugly game.

    Stop misusing our talent Schiano!

  10. Bucky23 Says:

Jackson said that he is too fast for revis. Please play man schiano

  11. Captain Stagger Says:

Goldson is gonna get suspended this week. But seeing wannabe rapper DJax get decapitated will make it all worth while.

  12. WalkdaPlank Says:

Just because Vick is out doesn’t mean the Bucs have been given an advantage. Remember what happened just last season? With Nick Foles?

  13. Cmurda Says:

All the chatter of Vick being out is premature. Reports are saying that he was able to do more than expected and hasn’t officially been ruled out. I personally hope that Vick is in. I think Foles is the better QB.

  14. SeanyMac in SC Says:

We have got to beat these pigeons this week. Lets turn this thing around.

  15. PRBucFan Says:

Good, now we can make Foles pay for what he did to us last year

  16. Buc1987 Says:

Foles will be playing up against a much better D than he saw last time.

  17. White Tiger Says:

Joe – you’ve got to quit this act where you feign you don’t already know the outcome.

Nick Foles is a Buc killing QB – as DEMONSTRATED. it’s not going to get better with him actually running the exact (spread) offense he ran in college!?

This time, just for good measure – there’s a guy on the Philly sideline that actually ran a spread offense. He could probably be considered a professor of the spread…

Now, SSchiano is finally facing an offense he’s seen before – so our Defense MIGHT show up strong this game.

…but Philly still isn’t worried – because Chip’s already seen Rutgers offense a time or two before as well.

HINT: (spoiler alert) Philly isn’t worried – because we won’t be scoring much.

  18. Adam L. Says:

The thing that worries me about the Eagles is the intimidation factor of all their Super Bowl rings……

    …. too soon?
