It’s The Little Things

October 13th, 2013

Once in a while, Joe drops how he had a former NFL player for a high school coach, a guy who had direct coaching lineage to John Madden, Gene Stallings and Lou Holtz, and indirect football knowledge from Bear Bryant, crazy Al Davis, crazy Woody Hayes and Sid Gillman.

The one thing Joe’s coach always told him was it was little things that mattered. If you did all the little things correctly, it added up to big time results. And, man, Joe’s coach was so right. It’s the little things that make a player.

Well, to hear Bucs stud cornerback Darrelle Revis talk, it is the little things that the Bucs are not doing. That’s why, in part, the Bucs only have one win in the past 11 NFL regular season games under Bucs commander Greg Schiano.

“It’s the little things that we are not focusing on that we need to focus on,” Revis said. “We’ve got to be consistent throughout the whole game. I don’t think we’ve yet this year played a consistent game, where everybody is really in-sync playing from the first quarter to the fourth quarter.”

This is just staggering to Joe. The Bucs have more coaches than the U.S. Army had men when the Allies invaded Guadalcanal, and still the players are not being coached up properly?

It’s not like this is coming from the likes of Myron Lewis. This is coming from Revis, a man who may be in the Hall of Fame and has played in two AFC title games — a man who has an idea of what it takes to be a winner in the NFL.

How is a team, that has more coaches than the population of Aruba, is not able to teach the little things to players to make them successful?

It’s simple. Quality over quantity. I apply this wisdom to everything except my sex life.

I’m going to ignore the negatives. I think ALL of you have that covered pretty well.

    The positives I saw were:

Glennon looked better in his second game. He started rough…staring down WRs and such, but he quickly corrected himself on several plays. I still don’t see the accuracy we’ve heard about. Especially on the deep passes, which he seems bad at. Things chamged when he scrambled. It forced the Eagles defense to account for the possibility of him doing it again and caused things to open up.

Offensive line had some good moments, which surprised me with Nicks out. There were times when Glennon had all day to pass. Other times he didn’t. It was enough to score a couple times.

Martin broke a couple. Penaltirs negated some but at least we know he’s not in a slump.

Jackson seemed to be catching better. I’d heard he spent time working with Glennon during the bye…it paid off. I think if Williams had played we would have scored 1-2 more TDs.

The backup pass catchers did better than expected. I thought Underwood would be rusty, which he was, but there wasn’t more than a few major mishaps.

Sully in the box…I believe he did a better job calling plays in the box. Maybe, being a second year OC, it is just what he needs.

Probably being OVERCOACHED causing these “pro” players to think too much versus just playing football.

Schiano deserves to be fired. You can put sparkly glitter on a turd and it may look ok. In the end it is still a turd underneath. Fire Schiano.

BB, I agree with you on all counts. It seemed to help having Sully up in the box.

Joe…you had a NFL player for a high school coach and now we have a high school coach for a NFL coach.

I feel especially bad for Revis. He is clearly a super-stud of a cornerback. For his talent he deserves a much better team.
