Chucky Full Of It Again

August 29th, 2013

Its not just Joe, but throughout the NFL, most experts not named Fran Tarkenton are bullish on Bucs franchise quarterback Josh Freeman. Chucky is no exception.

The lone coach to guide the Bucs to a Super Bowl victory, and the last coach to guide the Bucs to any postseason, Chucky told eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune how the Bucs should be good this year and Chucky waxed poetic over Freeman.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Fran Tarkenton,’’ Gruden said, “but I don’t necessarily agree with his comment on Josh Freeman. I’ve lived in Tampa 13 years, and I have studied Tampa Bay carefully for a lot of reasons. If you don’t think Josh Freeman can play, I think you’re making a huge mistake.

“He broke franchise records (passing yards, touchdown passes), and I’ve seen him do it at a high level. That means he can do it again. Not everyone agrees. I’m accused of being too positive and liking everybody, but I do like Freeman. I wish I had Josh Freeman, I’ll just say it like that.’’

You wished you would have had him, huh Chucky? Joe calls bullspit on that one.

Now Joe will forever be indebted to Chucky for getting the Bucs to the Holy Grail of football, and so too should all Bucs fans. Too many people conveniently forget it was Chucky, not Father Dungy, who got the Bucs the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The idiots who claim Chucky won with Father Dungy’s team simply display their ignorance about the Bucs, and about football in general.

(So, please tell Joe, you Father Dungyites, how come the Almighty Father Dungy couldn’t win with his players? Hhhmmm?)

But Chucky is best known, a decade later, for spewing nonsense rather than coaching a Super Bowl winner. His tripe is so thick on Monday Night Football, the only time Joe can watch is if he finds a noisy bar where he can’t hear the audio.

If Chucky really wanted a young stud quarterback, he could have drafted one. He ran the Bucs draft and had ample opportunities to draft a quarterback. Does the name Aaron Rodgers ring a bell? Chucky could have drafted him. But Chucky would have rather worked with rejects such as “Son of Bob,” a walking pick-six if there ever was one, or a near-washed up Jeff Garcia.

There’s a damned good chance Chucky would still be coaching the Bucs if he had drafted Rodgers.

Gruden very well may be full of it but isn’t it also fair to say that maybe his years in the booth watching Rodgers and the rest of these young QB’s made him realize he made a mistake not grooming a young QB while coaching?

  2. BirdDoggers Says:

Gruden would have a big problem with Freeman as his QB. Gruden loves the high percentage check down pass, not exactly Freeman’s strength. To be fair, Gruden would have a problem with whoever his quarterback is. I remember all the Brett Favre talk when Gruden was still in town and Favre was available. Gruden was reportedly to be in love with Favre. Favre was a gunslinger and an interception machine, not exactly Gruden’s cup of tea either.

  3. Mean D Says:

Chuckie speaks positively about everybody – even Radio Morris. He knows in his heart Freeman sux.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Maybe they should produce another movie like “Bride Of Chucky” “Quarterback Of Chucky”

Who really cares what Chucky thinks about QBs….we have the top expert, Shaun King!!!

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  5. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Gruden went on to say, “I wouldn’t marry Josh Freeman, but I would date him.”

Joe, I liked Jeff Garcia. At least he made games watchable. If only we could have gotten him 5 years prior.

  6. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

My oh my…look at all the Freeman haters throwing a tantrum 😉

  7. GRIF4FREESUX Says:

    Oh,Mean D,ur so mean,please be careful or u might hurt 1 of these thin-skinned freemanites feelings.lol…

  8. Chef Paul Says:

Holy cow! I cant tell from the writing if more anger is directed towards Dungy or Gruden. Am I reading it wrong?

  9. Solaire of Astora Says:

I’m pretty sure Gruden wanted to draft Rodgers but got vetoed. I think Rodgers said that Gruden told him the bucs were going to draft him then out of no where we picked Caddy

  10. Greg Smithwick Says:

You know, the “Dungy’s Team” think still gripes me, for this reason:

There is just NO denying that Dungy did, in fact, change the CULTURE of Tampa Bay football. Our players off field antics, and work ethic were terrible prior to Coach Dungy.

The players that won the Superbowl may not have been Dungy’s team…But the system, the facilities, and, more important, the work ethic and culture were put in place by Coach Dungy.

  11. Eric Says:

Super Bowl champs, plus division titles in 2005 and 2007. Back to back winning seasons last two years, yet subject to ridicule.

How have we been doing since he left?

All the guy did was support Josh Freeman, what did he say that was wrong?

He should still be coaching the Bucs, we wouldn’t be back to laughing stocks again.

The guy liked an experienced QB, like Gannon, Brad Johnson and Garcia. Each of those guys won him a Division Title and made the pro bowl, and Brad the Super Bowl.

That sounds damn good compared to the total disasters we’ve seen of late.

What’s the rockstar done again? Didley squat.

  12. buc4lyfe Says:

lol for all you freeman haters your frontin now but everybody knows that you’ll jump on the bandwagon if atleast for one season if we are winning games regardless of how good or bad freeman plays….the bucs dont operate on what fans like or not if you havent noticed so who cares how you feel about free, no one is getting behind free but last i checked he wore a buc uniform. a coach yea we run them out of town but your killing yourself stressing over what is inevitable. freeman will start, every other fool watching espn can debate about glennon starting midseason but thats laughable. so go ahead and make something out of nothing by watching glennon torch a bunch of players on their way out of the nfl or the practice squad….some of you must be working in the jacksonville jaguars front office with your analysis of benching a starting qb

i disagree with you on one point, yes dungy changed the culture but those players already had talent, derrick brooks and warren sapp werent his draft picks, neither was john lynch, simeon rice was a free agent….he telling us how we can build our team from the back end up but other than booger, who got drafted by him that we can remember going to a probowl on the d line? yep ill give him ronde but even hall of fame coaches hit and miss

  14. Eric Says:

Chucky liked an experienced QB to run his offense.

That method brought him Gannon, Johnson, and Garcia.

Multiple playoff appearances and division titles with Gannon, Super Bowl with Johnson, division Title with Garcia. All made the Pro Bowl under Chucky.

Please give me the washed up approach….vs. the lasting pretenders of Rock Stars “build a loser through the draft” approach.

Should have Never been fired, most idiotic move in Bucs history IMO.

  15. Bucnjim Says:

Gruden brought in over 20 new players most on offense so it wasn’t Dungy’s team that took the field. If it was we would have never made it past that game in Philly and the Eagles would have been in the Super Bowl not the Bucs. Loved Dungy, but first he had the #1 defense in the NFL (no Super Bowl’s) then he had the #1 offense in the NFL (1 Super Bowl) With these two units there should have been multiple.

your no einstein either you terdburgler, thats a stupid comeback. i dont think you know anything about the bucs, your probably from some hole in the ground wishing for an nfl team…..maybe you should try talking some other sport that doesnt require common sense like chicken fighting

  20. Deminion Says:

Hated watchin gruden ball dinks and dunks in the Garcia and Johnson era loved the Super Bowl tho… I forgot we had Chris Simms lol and Brian griese

  21. Raphael Says:

If only Freeman played defense too….

i like gruden but we got old as soon as he took over and yes it got us a superbowl but he was no good at drafting which is why we wasted a pick on dexter jackson, gaines adams, kenyatta walker and on and on

By the same token, who did Gruden pick that was memorable?

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

This article is a great example of the differences between the two Joes. This one tends to be far more aggressive in his stances.

  25. PRBucFan Says:

Nice try throwing the bait out there Joe

    Dungy’s D
    Gruden’s Offense

    Rather simple concept.

  26. Greg Smithwick Says:

    buc4lyfe:

We are not really in disagreement. I would argue that some players (particularly Warren Sapp) NEEDED a strong culture and discipline, or they would have been average, or out of the league with drug/crime woes.

No doubt, they were GREAT players…But, hey…Dan Marino never got a ring.

  27. RBellBuc Says:

You wished you would have had him, huh Chucky? Joe calls bullspit on that one.

Why is that so hard to believe? If Gruden had Freeman during those years after 2002, with the defense he still possessed, they may have won another SB or at least made it to post season a lot more than they did.. Ask some of the Bucs prior to 2009 if they would have liked to had Freeman as their QB? I bet after some thought, they would all say yes.

There is no doubt had this team had at least a top 15 defense since 2009 they would have already made the post season.

  28. Raphael Says:

    Agreed Rbell buc. ^^^^^

I fully expect this will be deleted due to factual content.

Feel free to detail the untruths in this post.

  31. Joke Says:

    Joe,
Gruden didn’t say he would’ve drafted Freeman, just that he would want him as a quarterback. Freeman’s going into his 5th year as a starter — certainly sounds like someone the old Gruden would’ve wanted to coach.

  32. Buc_The_World Says:

To say Gruden won with Tony’s team may be ignorant, but to imply Tony Dungy was not a winning coach is just asinine. I thought father Dungy had a Superbowl ring. I thought father Dungy took 2 teams that we’re terrible and made them into winning organizations. First of all Gruden did benefit by having the best defense in the league which if I’m not mistaken was perfected under Dungy’s watch. I like Gruden and if he came here and had to start from scratch like schiano you might have a point, but he came to a team that was very capable of winning a SuperBowl and he tweaked it a bit and won one. So yes Chucky did win a Superbowl but he benefited by having majority of the pieces in place.

    Here’s number one….

“He ran the Bucs draft and had ample opportunities to draft a quarterback.”

Really? Ran the Bucs draft did he? So…. you’re saying that with Calvin Johnson available, it was Coach’s choice to take Gaines Adams?

I’m calling —— your favorite term—– BULLSPIT on that one…..
