Dominik Says Glennon Might Dominate Preseason

May 15th, 2013

Mark Dominik says Mike Glennon has to play a ton in August

The stage will be there for rookie Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon to implant a quarterback controversy in the minds of Bucs fans.

Per rockstar general manager Mark Dominik, via a recent NFL.com podcast, Glennon will get all kinds of work come August.

“We’re going to put a lot of pressure on [Glennon] and see a lot of reps from him in the preseason. He’s got to play,” Dominik said. “We may not see as much of Dan Orlovsky or even of Josh Freeman somewhat in the preseason as much as you’re going to see Glennon …

“We’re excited about just the little bit we saw from him [during rookie minicamp] in terms of mentally what he could handle. We kept piling more on him and he kept doing a great job digesting it, regurgitating it and running the team.”

This is great to hear, and it will make for an absolutely fascinating preseason.

Looks like the Pop-star is throwing out a life line when they start Glennon at week 10 and won’t make the playoffs. Then in the off-season we will hear the Boy-Genius GM say how that this was the plan all-along.

  2. Vic66 Says:

Sounding good thus far. Looks like August is going to be fun. This guy, Glennon, is smart. Bet he will have play book down and very little to nun miscommunication with receivers. Also heard he has a cannon of an arm.

  3. Capt. Tim Says:

She’s more muscular than he is!
I just can’t believe how scrawny this kid is.

No way he survives in the NFL.

I’ve pulled thicker necks out of a Turkey cavity, on thanksgiving!

  4. stevek Says:

Develop this guy, and we can either reap the benefits of having: A) Starting QB if Freeman bombs, and/or B) Great depth, and possible trade bait.

  5. BigSombrero Says:

I didn’t think we would see this kid at all this year outside of preseason barring an injury to Free so I don’t buy into the QB controversy. But the more and more I hear, I am becoming less sure of this. I wonder what the chances are that Schiano would Bench Free for this guy and what it would take exactly.

  6. lightningbuc Says:

Is that a recent pic? He looks like a tall, skinny eighth grader standing next to his hot older sister.

  7. Vic66 Says:

Capt Tim– it’s the scrawny weak looking ones who will whip your arse in a fight. Keep your post on a peice of paper close to the table. You will need it there so you can eat your words later this year.

  8. SirustheVirus Says:

This will have no affect with Freeman being the starter. Glennon will take most of the reps after the starting unit gets off the field.

  9. Mitch Says:

Buc realist, you sound bitter and condescending in every single one of your posts. Your negative energy sucks ,but nothing anyone says here will change how you are. In short, I hope that one day you find peace with your troubles and learn how to enjoy the brighter side of life for once… Have a great day man.

  10. BigSombrero Says:

Well either way, preseason is preseason and I am not jumping on the Glennon train no matter how he looks. In my opinion its Freemans job until he loses it. I just wonder what Schiano thinks constitutes as Freeman losing it. I wonder how long the rope Schiano is giving Freeman to figuratively climb/hang himself with.

  11. chris Says:

    At Captain Tim,

You know, they said the same thing about Matt Ryan and Tom Brady, that they were “Scrawny” and too skiny to hold up.

I’ve seen many comparisons of Glennon to Matt Ryan and they are very similar. Glennon is extremely smart, accurate, and makes good plays. Throws well on anticipation. He was working with a young, raw, and inexperienced WR core this year that dropped several balls on him.

There were times he was inconsistent, but this kid has a chance to be a better pro than college QB. He’s got high football IQ and very intelligent, something I cannot say about Freeman. I mean, people rave about his work ethic and how much time he spends in the film room, yet you don’t see it translate to the field.

  12. robert Says:

about the third time jfro stares down Vjax we will see Glennon come in!!!

    I can only dream!

  13. chris Says:

    Robert,

Pretty much right. So many people think “Josh will put it together this year”.

Nothing against Freeman. Seems like a great player, but dating back to his days at Kansas State, he’s had the same issues we;ve seen after 4 years in the nfl. He hasn’t broken them since he was 18 years old. What makes you think he will now?

Lets just say this, when defenses were lining up 8 in the box at times, he still struggled. It’s because he doesnt see the whole field. He looks at his presnap, decides where he wants to go. IF its not there initially, he’ll hold the ball, hesitate and wait til he comes open rather than moving to his next read.

  14. Jbeachbuc Says:

This is very exciting news … I’m a huge Freeman supporter but he drove me nuts last year.. Not to mention he scares me to death sometimes. I hope his issues were from pressing too much as others have suggested here…..
But we have to look at the possibility he just can’t get it done when it matters most, the more capable Glennon is , the better for the Bucs.

  15. Rob Says:

Can’t wait until Glennon plays well this preseason against guys who other teams are about to cut and the Bucs fan base starts calling for him to replace Freeman after he throws his first pick.

  16. Rob Says:

Also… anyone going on and on about Glennon being skinny hasn’t seen a picture of Brady as a rookie. Not saying there’s a comparison here, but for God’s sake… his build doesn’t necessarily mean he’s got no future here.

  17. Raphael Says:

Lmao @ the Freeman haters …

  18. lightningbuc Says:

    Lmao @ the Freeman lovers…

  19. robert Says:

not a freeman hater. I’m a bucs fan…….I just happen to think his inability to read a defense and go through progressions hurts the team.

I’m pro Bucs, not anti Freeman

I will happily eat crow should he progress into a “QB” and game manager as opposed to a hot and cold gun slinger

  20. BigSombrero Says:

The only thing worse than a Free hater is a Free apologist. How about we meet in the middle here guys and admit Free hasn’t played consistently well enough to be a franchise QB but he still offers us the best shot and getting into the playoffs. He has all the potential required to pull it together but he hasn’t realized that potential yet.

Thats the truth of it guys. Im sorry if it hurts to accept that fact, i’m sorry if you completely overlook his ability and i’m sorry if you think its everyone elses fault but his. He needs to play better, I believe he can play better, but he hasn’t played well enough. It’s that simple.

  21. Buc Fan #238 Says:

Plus, Glenon’s fall away jumpers will be right on the money even as he is avoiding pressure, he still is tall enough to throw it over the lineman.

  22. Biggun Says:

Glennon is still growing give him a couple years and he’ll be 250+ pd QB… as for Free I want him to work and feel he can get this offense with the O-line healthy he should be great if not Glennon will surprise many with his talent had Matt Ryan’s BC coach at NC State there’s the reason he’s similar to Ryan.

  23. BigSombrero Says:

@Biggun – I think his weight is irrelevant. Weight has no barring on a QB’s ability unless he is a scrambling type. Glennon is not going to be killing anyone with his feet no matter what. Look around the league and notice some of the best qbs walk around with guts or they are as skinny as Glennnon. Plus adding weight might affect his throwing negatively. He’s fine where hes at really. Im optimistic about Glennon myself after watching his games but I just think we need to give Free the year to sink or swim. If he doesn’t improve then make changes as necessary.

  24. Mike Says:

Seems like a Drew Brees and Philip Rivers situation is shaping up.. Glennon playing well is only good for the Bucs.. Freeman has a great year and none of this matters… Can wait to see that D flying around tho! It’s going to be like the good ole days..GO BUCS!

  25. Capt. Tim Says:

Physically- this kid has no comparisons to Ryan or Brady. While both were considered less than ideal height- neither was scrawny.

Vic- you haven’t been in any fights. That’s pretty obvious. But we aren’t talking about fights. ( well, you are- but you are a lil confused on this.)

We are talking about getting decked repeatedly by 300lb plus monsters. 10-15 times a game.

Stick figure Glennon won’t survive that. – they gotta get him in the weight room

  26. Capt. Tim Says:

Bigsombrero- NFL QBs average 12 knockdowns a game. That’s getting knocked on yer arse after throwing.

That doesn’t count sacks, or scrambling.

It’s an extremely physical game. He’s gonna get hit on most plays. He better put on 30 lbs of muscle- or rent a table in the trainers room

  27. flmike Says:

btw – That’s his girlfriend…and yes, go look at the tape, he has a cannon for an arm. He’s 6’7″ and 220lbs, and graduated early from NCSU with two degrees. This guy is no dummy, but he’s going to need some work before he’s ready to start anywhere in the NFL.

  28. BigSombrero Says:

Tom Brady is listed at 225 6’4. Glennon is listed at 232 6’6. Maybe he can put on 5 lbs or so but I don’t think its necessary. While there is a difference between college and NFL players, Glennon took has fair share of shots at NC State. I don’t foresee his weight being an issue.

  29. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Dominik obviously creating secondary options at the QB position in order to keep Freeman’s contract numbers down and/or to push him to improve this season, and also to have Glennon ready in case Freeman implodes under pressure or simply can’t find any consistency this year.

  30. FLBoyInDallas Says:

And Glennon got hit plenty at NC State. Never injured. Whoever is drawing conclusions as to performance based on a photo is an idiot, plain and simple.

  31. the_buc_realist Says:

He looks just like Brad Johnson when he came out of Florida State.. just 2 inches taller. Glennon starts 2014 day 1, write it down.

  32. Steve Says:

I Think Freeman needs to look in the miror first before he can fix anything. Too many times last year after he made a bad play did you see the camra zoom him on his facial expression alway with the look as if it was someone elses fault.

  33. Tbuc Says:

Dude needs to hit the gym. Looks scrawny as hell.

  34. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Realist, its possible. If Freeman goes down for some amount of time and Glennon shines. He then gets traded and “starts 2014 day 1” for some team. You definitely could be right.

  35. Andrew 1 Says:

Im probably the only one that feels this way but I think the best pick in the draft was Mike Glennon. Thats not for the sake of replacing Freeman, its just good to have another solid QB for many different reasons.

  36. Jacko101 Says:

Whoever said Glennon was accurate had only watched his highlight film. His potential is HIGH and I believe he can play at this level. But his decision. Making is overall and accuracy is average

  37. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

I agree with Rob, Glennon will probably light it up against guys that will be bagging groceries the following week and everyone will be calling for him to start.

  38. Ptwalk Says:

@ the_buc_realess- I dont think theres anything wrong that being the plan, as long as its plan (B). With plan (A) being giving Free around 10 or so games, evaluate him to see if he finishes the season or plan (B) give job to Glennon to prepare for next year.

  39. T in Orlando Says:

    @ Capt Tim

While he has filled out over the past 14 years, Tom Brady absolutely was considered scrawny coming out of college.

Here’s an old scouting report on Brady:
Positives: Good height to see the field. Very poised and composed. Smart and alert. Can read coverages. Good accuracy and touch. Produces in big spots and in big games. Has some Brian Griese in him and is a gamer. Generally plays within himself. Team leader.

Negatives: Poor build. Very skinny and narrow. Ended the ’99 season weighing 195 pounds and still looks like a rail at 211. Looks a little frail and lacks great physical stature and strength. Can get pushed down more easily than you’d like. Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush. Lacks a really strong arm. Can’t drive the ball down the field and does not throw a really tight spiral. System-type player who can get exposed if he must ad-lib and do things on his own

As for Ryan, on ESPN he’s listed at 6’4″, 217lbs, Glennon is 6’6″ 232 lbs, extremely similar builds.

Granted, the only thing this means, is that his frame/build should not be a knock on his game (although I think it does leave him open to be mocked, he reminds me of NBA “great” Sean Bradley).

If you look at some of Glennon’s highlights, you’ll see him taking a hit right after delivering the ball, and is always getting back up. We’ll see how he takes such hits in the pro game, but so far, he’s had no problem getting hit.

All of this talk about his size being an issue is ridiculous. It hasn’t been a problem for him yet, and there a plenty of similarly size QBs that have played in the NFL before him (we had one in Chris Simms, not that he was great, but his size is not what held him back).

All I really care about is how well he can deliver the ball to the WRs/TEs/RBs.

  40. Bobby Says:

Yeah, when I read Capt. Tim’s post I was thinking “Huh??!?” If Brady can make it then anybody can make it because he was the scrawniest looking QB I’ve ever seen hit the NFL as a rookie. Glennon has some guns, Brady looked like he had chicken wings. Glennon has a long neck but I don’t think it looks scrawny. I don’t care if he’s built like Olive Oil as long as he can perform on the field.

  41. BucoBruce Says:

I have been saying Glennon is Brady like and Belicheat told Shiano to go after this kid.

  42. BucSnob Says:

Robert prepare to eat crow. Freeman is going flourish this season. I can’t wait.

  43. Drew Says:

Brady is 2.96 pounds per inch where Glennon is 2.97 pounds per inch. Just clarifying the height to weight issue being discussed.

  44. robert Says:

BucSnob………I’ve been hearing that for a few years now.

potential this, potential that, it’s the O line, the play book, the coaches are holding him back……..the excuses are endless.

yet the same problems appear each year. staring down the WR and not reading the defense.

I fear it’s like trying to change a nagging wife. they CAN’T change!

    no crow yet

  45. Bobby Says:

@robert….Freeman did enough to win us 10 games last year. The four we lost to keep us out of the playoffs I lay at the feet of the pass Defense. Washington, Philly, Atlanta, and the Giants. Freeman has been inconsistent but he has shown the potential to be brilliant and I believe, like Flacco, he’ll come into his own and then you’ll be on here posting how you always believed in him, you’re sooo happy he’s finally come into his own…yada, yada, yada.

  46. OAR Says:

Anyway, like I was sayin’, crow is the fruit of the chee. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, crow-kabobs, crow creole, crow gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple crow, lemon crow, coconut crow, pepper crow, crow soup, crow stew, crow salad, crow and potatoes, crow burger, crow sandwich…..Considering the outcome for this particular reason for eating it, there isn’t nothing wrong with a little crow in one’s diet from time to time!

  47. Justin Says:

Whats up with everyone knocking him for being scrawny. His body build is identical to Luke McCown

  48. robert Says:

VJax and Muscle Hampster won us our games last year!

freeman looked great for a 4 game stretch…..the same stretch when Martin was BLOWING UP!

    coincidence? I think not.

  49. Andrew 1 Says:

look if the bucs organization thought Freeman was sooooo bad and felt like they couldn’t win with him, like some of you posters do, they would have done everything possible to replace him with a better QB by now. just like they did at the CB position. no offense but I trust their judgement over any of you guys.

  50. Andrew 1 Says:

therefore all of you people calling for Freeman’s head are overreacting, as always.

  51. lightningbuc Says:

“no offense but I trust their judgement over any of you guys.”

I agree Andy! I mean, with a record like Dominik’s, how could you NOT trust his judgment?

Or, unlike what you said, maybe Dominik doesn’t want to admit what a poor decision it was to trade up to “reach” for your boy Free in the draft.

  52. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    Brady draft #’s: 6’4″ 211

    Glennon: 6’7″ 225

If Glennon is scrawny, so was Brady. Perhaps the comparisons end there, but, the point is, his weight is not a forever problem. He will gain….

  53. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ lightningbuc

yea ok, when you become the bucs GM then you can come talk to me. until then go talk to someone you gives a damn about your comment.

  54. tye Says:

This is such encouraging news… After 4 (excruciating) Seasons of JF, 1 can deduce from them a good evaluation of what kind of QB he is…. Average at best still showing often signs of bad habits going back to his college days…. Making the same fundamental mistakes as rookies does not bode well for him… He will likely make some team a serviceable backup.

As for Glennon, it looks as though he has more of people’s expectations than JF did when he had just been drafted… Since JF has played 4 seasons like he should have been a 3rd round pick, it would be highly rewarding and even redemption for the Bucs if MG plays like a 1st round pick…

At least for now it seems like the preseason games may be worth watching!

  55. chris Says:

So many of you keep arguing the Philly and Washington game that the Defense lost. Do you not realize Freeman played Horribly in those games? Like really?

Sure the defense(secondary) struggled to hold the lead, but Freeman didn’t do anything special to help the defenses out either.

  56. Buc Fan #238 Says:

“I agree Andy! I mean, with a record like Dominik’s, how could you NOT trust his judgment?”

    Funny.

But, Dom had to deal with Raheem and Freeman for most of his tenure at the top.

Get rid of Freeloader and he will be sittin pretty. GREAT job at drafting Freewomen’s replacement.

  57. Stranger Says:

    @robert

You can’t give credit to VJax without giving some to Freeman as well. Being paired together was huge for both of them since both had career years.

  58. Bobby Says:

@Chris….you give the defense the lead with just minutes to go and you lose…..it’s the defenses fault.

  59. Stranger Says:

Raheem had nothing to do with Dom’s draft record and the fact we’ve had more luck in the late rounds of drafts than we have in the mid rounds.

  60. Capt. Tim Says:

My comment” he needs to hit the weight room”

Getting hit by 240lb college DEs, is alot different from Gerald McCoy smashing you to the ground.

I hadn’t said a word about his skill level.

Buuut- he’s a statue. No mobility. He gets “happy feet” in the pocket when pressured. He locks on primary Reciever, and seldom goes to 2nd option.

He’s a bit of a reach in the Third. He does have some (very) raw skills. But pocket statues are quickly becoming a thing of the pass in the NFL. If your QB is mobile- he can attack the defense with his feet.

    That will never be Glennon

But he’s a backup. – some people always pile on their bandwagon. It’s rediculous.

If this kid is out starter in the next 3 years, we are in horrible trouble.

  61. Bucfan Says:

Glennon is a better prospect coming out than freeman was with higher football iq.

I’m still convinced if it wasn’t for Raheem the Dream taking free in round 1 he would have fallen out of the first in 09.

  62. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

It seems like some Bucs fans have forgotten what it was like to have a truly terrible quarterback. Has it been THAT LONG since Byron Leftwich was duking it out with Luke McCown for the starting gig? Chris Simms? We had a revolving door at quarterback before Dom. Some fans are complaining because he isn’t a superstar. Even if he never reaches that status he is WAY BETTER than A LOT of quarterbacks in the league.

    Miami Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill
New York Jets: Mark Sanchez/Geno Smith (Whichever sucks less)
    Cleveland Browns: Brandon Weeden?
Jacksonville Jaguars: Chad Henne/Blaine Gabbert? (Whichever sucks less)
    Tennessee Titans: Jake Locker
Kansas City Chiefs: Brady Quinn? Alex Smith?
Oakland Raiders: Matt Flynn? Terrelle Pryor?
    Dallas Cowboys: Tony Romo
    Philadelphia Eagles: Michael Vick?
    Minnesota Vikings: Christian Ponder?
    Arizona Cardinals: Carson Palmer?
    St. Louis Rams: Sam Bradford
    Buffalo Bills: E.J. Manuel

Would you seriously take ANY of these guys over Freeman?

I wouldn’t. I don’t think Freeman is great but I think we could do MUCH worse.

  63. Bucfan Says:

Actually bobby when watching those games against Washington in stead of locking onto mike Williams in double coverage he missed a wide open Vincent Jackson in the endZone. Then against Philly what sparked our offense was a muffed punt by phi and Doug Martin domination. Freeman could not read what the eagles (which is sad) were doing on defense even after thy were surrendering 70+ % completion and 130+ qb rating against prior qbs. Yet free tossed a merely 42 percent and had about 6 INTs dropped.

If you had access to the coaches film you can see it. No I’m not a coach but anyone who has played the sport knows what’s awful to what’s good.

And football games are not lost at the end. Watching it from beginning to end it’s not good. Sure the secondary was bad last year but watching freeman Tim te ball over or lead to 3 and outs doesn’t help either. Majority of his success came with man defense ad deep balls. Once defenses mixed coverages and took that away you saw freeman completely struggle. Trying to beat cover 2/3 deep on the ouysde? Lol. You beat that through the seems.

Many want to complain about Dallas Clark. There are many times you are him get open. Freeman just doesn’t read the field well nor see the field very well.

  64. Stranger Says:

    @Bucfan

Incorrect. If we didn’t take Freeman, the Vikings would have. And no, Glennon is about the same prospect Freeman was. The only difference is that Freeman is physically more gifted than Glennon, thus the difference in draft grades.

  65. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    @Bucfan

Glennon is a better prospect coming out than freeman was with higher football iq.

No. At the very worst Freeman falls to the second round that year and Glennon achieved the very best by getting drafted in the third in a very down QB class. (If anything he was over-valued because of the lack of talent in this class). And how could you possibly know what their respective “football IQ’s” were?

Their stats were similar but Freeman had WAY more rushing yards and TDs.

I highly doubt Glennon gets drafted over Freeman coming out of college.

  66. pick6 Says:

i don’t care if it’s glennon or freeman, somebody needs to emerge as a legitimate franchise QB if we are going to return to being a consistently successful football team. as good as this defense might be, i don’t see 4 HOF candidates in that unit like the one that carried dungy’s sorry offense. therefore, we have to win like almost every other perennially strong franchise, with consistently excellent leadership and performance from the QB position

  67. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    @pick6

    McCoy, Lavonte, Revis, Goldson?

I think I see four candidates / potential candidates. Lavonte and McCoy haven’t been around long enough to be considered “candidates” but I think the potential is there. Revis may already have locked up his HOF status with his reputation for shutting down opposing receivers and Goldson was a key part of dominating defense for the past two years.

    Just a thought.

  68. Capt. Tim Says:

Freeman was ranked in the first round. He has the ability to be a franchise QB.
Glennon was a fifth round pick. He was rated as a fifth round pick on most scouting reports. he went higher, because this class had no Starting QBs. Glennon may be a good backup- which is what you expect from a third round pick.

Uninformed people always clamor for backup QBs. It’s because they don’t understand the teams real issues. So they cry about the only player who’s posistion they can identify. They can identify the QB- cause he throws the ball.
So if they bitch about him- they think it makes them knowledgeable.

Sadly, they have trained monkeys to cry for the backup.its easy, and requires no knowledge at all

    Have fun

  69. MR.T Says:

May the best man win the qb job, nuff said.

  70. Bobby Says:

@Bucfan….”Football games are not lost at the end” ????????? When you have the lead and the defense has a team in it’s own territory with very little time on the clock…..the game is lost at the end if they don’t hold them. I don’t care how many receivers Freeman didn’t see or missed, etc. He had the lead at the end of the game with time running out. We do have a ‘defense’ you know…you realize it’s their job to hold the lead when time is running out correct? So…how is that Freeman’s fault? The offense has the job of scoring. The defense has the job of preventing a score. I mean…C’mon man!!

  71. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

It was most certainly Raheems fault the Bucs were garbage… he proved to be a mental midget.

Look at the performance of his lackluster seconary in Washington?

Raheem was the biggest Tampa Bay embarrassment of all time. I feel bad for the coaches who were fired BY Raheem Morris. Imagine being fired by that bafoon?

  72. Bobby Says:

@Capt. Tim….do you just post on here to prove you lack of football knowledge?? Glennon moved up in the pocket pretty well from what I could see and I would say he has the ability to be not only good but elite. He’s not a scrambler but neither was Brady. He has a rocket arm but his receivers were terrible. I think you will be shocked at just how good he is going to be. Possibly just as shocked as you were about Schiano after you whined about him.

  73. BigSombrero Says:

Again, I say give this year to Free. Let him sink or swim and if he flops or does his inconsistent schtick again then dump him and move on. It’s that simple in my mind. That gives Glennon a year to watch and learn and another offseason to improve and gel. It also gives Schiano and Co. the chance to evaluate Glennon in a pro setting and figure out if he has the potential to be a franchise QB or not then go from there.

If Glennon is capable then let him have it in 2014, if not then draft another guy in the much more talented 2014 draft class. We have to remember, Glennon wasn’t a 1st rd pick so Schiano isn’t locked into him as a starter. But of course this will be a moot point if Free pulls it together and produces a consistent season.

  74. BigSombrero Says:

Throwing Glennon out there year one without giving Free a shot would be the dumbest possible move.

  75. Stranger Says:

    @Bucs Fan #238

Injuries and Tanard’s suspension had a bigger effect on the Redskins’s secondary. Even then, they still made the playoffs and could have easily beaten the Seahawks if they put in Cousins in the 2nd. If Raheem is to blame for anything, its him vouching for Tanard. And no, the responsibility falls to the GM and the front office in regards to what talent we bring in. If a coaching change still showcases a porous defense, then the defense simply lacks talent and that’s the fault of the GM. Hopefully, the talent issue is now gone.

  76. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Bobby

great posts. I agree with everything you had to say, especially your take on Glennon.

  77. Capt. Tim Says:

Bobby- ” moved pretty well from what I could see”
You must believe you have some great vision. Better than the 77 picks that passed on him. Better than the proffesional scouts that deemed him a statue. Better than the teams DESPERATE for a QB, who passed on him

This guy got passed over by dozens of teams looking for a QB, multiple times. In a draft with the worst qB class in 23 years.

But he looked pretty mobile to Bobby! Lmao

Ok- NFL scout bobby- you just keep right on living your little fantasy. And keep believing that this Fragile statue is going to be our savior as a starting QB

Stupid fans in 28cities( not NE,Green Bay, NO, or Atlanta)all cry that the Backup Qb should start.

Why not join the huddled, clueless masses, and cry for a guy who has never thrown a pass in the big leagues. You should. I’m always saying” Man! The NFL needs more dumb fans! It has a real shortage!!”

Thanks for joining the clueless masses, buddy

  78. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Reading way too much into this, people. It’s as simple as this…if Freeman does go down the Bucs do not want to go to Dan-o. So they will play Glennon as much as possible IN THE PRESEASON.

So far as Freeman not playing much in preseason…that’s no different than any other team any other year. Starters are preserved. Backups are tested.

    Mountain meet molehill.

  79. Capt. Tim Says:

Raheem won 10 games, with the most talentless team to ever have a winning season.
It was during Dom’s” we refuse to sign free agent “phase.when He preached how great teams ” build thru the draft”.
He eventually realized he was a terrible drafter – and has been FA crazy ever since

How Raheem took that lousy team to ten wins is nothing short of a miracle. He can coach.

He lost control of his team. But when you have a team full of scumbags- like Talibum, retard Jackson, and Jeremy”Rapist” Stevens, that can happen

“As good as this defense might be, i don’t see 4 HOF candidates in that unit like the one that carried Dungy’s sorry offense.”

No one saw those guys that way in the beginning either. It is too early to tell either way…so saying it won’t happen would be premature.

  81. Stevek Says:

Capt. Tim is firing the cannons tonight!

I’m calling an 11-5 season. We make the playoffs.

  82. chris Says:

    Captain Tim,

You say most scouting reports rated him as a 5th round pick? You mean the media’s?

A lot of Guru guys like Cossell and Bucky Brooks, to name a few, have said Glennon was a 1st round talent who projects very well as a potential franchise QB.

He’;s got all the phyiscal tools Josh has, but really what makes me like his upside is his football IQ. The guy has got it between the ears.

What makes me question Freeman’s IQ is , you hear time and time and time again how he puts in the work in the film room. Yet, still struggles with reading coverages, especially dissecting zone and man. Also, too hesitant in deciisons and it took him awhile to apparently adjust to the playbook when rookies such as Wilson, Luck, and RG III picked it up quickly. Matt Ryan also had to learn a new offense and terminoligy. That excuses runs dry.

  83. BigMacAttack Says:

Dom is a better GM now than he was as a rookie in 2009′. He’s been with Bucs for a long time and I love watching guys work/earn their way to the top. Dom is getting better each year and the trend will continue IMO.

I hope Glennon is all they say he is, and I hope Freeman throws for 5000 yds and 50 TD’s. I’ve said before that I’d rather be wrong and win than be right and lose. We’re all on the same side here. I’m stoked about our team and our chances. Cautiously Optimistic.

    Just Win Baby!!!

  84. Stranger Says:

That’s actually not an I.Q. issue Chris. Just ask Fitzpatrick.

  85. Capt. Tim Says:

Bigmac- amen! I hope josh throws for 600 yards at 6 TDs in 3 quarters, then Glennon comes in and throws 3 more TDs in the 4th.

Chris- look a little harder- especially the last four games. You can actually watch Cornerbacks break to the sideline-BEFORE Jackson or Williams made the break. That tells you that they knew the plays.

It’s had to find open guys- when the defense is waiting on them in the target zone.

Clarke isn’t the TE he used to be. Ware wasn’t a threat. They didn’t use Lorig much- which is strange- as he was a a real threat in the flats.

The Bucs didnt have an effective slot Reciever.

This is huge issue when added together. It means Josh has no threat in the middle of the field. By game 7, DBs were focused on the sidelines, and leaving the entire middle empty.

While this helped Martin with big runs-it made Josh’s job nearly impossible! Throw to two WRs, who have DBs waiting on them, where the ball is going.

    More turnovers. Struggling passing game.

An experienced Offensive co-ordinator adjust to defenses, as defense figure out the scheme. Sullivan struggled to adjust. This was obvious, when you freeze a play at 3 seconds. That’s the point when Freeman should be beginning his throw on target. You could actually see defenders waiting as Our WRs broke Towards them.

That is called “sitting” in coverage. It requires knowledge and confidence in knowing the offensive plays. You have to adjust the play calling when you see that

    We didn’t.

Hopefully Sullivan has learned from that, and burns the next DB that does that.

Much more importantly- hope that Steve Smith can regain form, and we can start attacking half the field- that we ignored last year.

While it made Josh look bad- it , as usual, is a lot more complicated than” Josh forgot how to throw. The culprit was year was A) lack of players capable of attacking the middle of the floor. B) our offense becoming predictable, and not adapting to it.

And it’s not an opinion. It is all right on film. John Lynch pointed it out several times while commentating the games.

Football aint a mystery.just gotta know what you are looking at

  86. Bobby Says:

@capt. Timmy…kind of like Brady getting picked in the 6th round. The scouts ALWAYS know. I’m telling you, this kid looks good to me. I can’t help it that you are always wrong about nearly everything. I’m sure Glennon is just one more you can add to the list. Plus, quite a few scouts and former QB’s really like this kid. I was mad about the pick until I looked at his college tape and then I was very impressed. We’ll see who’s right.

  87. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Glennon will turn out to be the steal of the draft. Remember, this is the guy who nearly broke Phillip Rivers TD Record at school.
All with a very average team, I might add.
The guy from NFL Films rated him the best QB in the draft, as did several other well known talent scouts.
Coach Schiano is here to win, and win now. Regardless of how he “sugar coats” it, Freeman is not his guy. If he was, no way would Glennon be here in Tampa.

Expect to see Glennon, when and if Freeman falters, in the least!
Remember, this is a contract year for Freeman, and Tampa will want to see what Glennon can do, before they even think about giving Josh all that money.

IF Josh falters in the least, and Glennon comes in, and does a good job, it will be the end of Josh Freeman, in Tampa.

The NFL is a business, and if we can get better QB play out of Glennon, then why pay Freeman megabucks ?

I think there was a very good reason Tampa did not offer Freeman a contract extension. Obviously, we were not sold on him enough to extend his contract, and if Glennon turn out to be the gunslinger many experts predict him to be, well … Goodbye Josh.

Not that it “matters”, but that really is his girlfriend, not his sister!

  88. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    @Capt. Tim

He eventually realized he was a terrible drafter – and has been FA crazy ever since

I agree with just about everything in all of your posts except ^^^this^^^. I’m not so sure four “big” free agents in two years is “FA crazy”. Other than that you make valid points on Freeman.

I do have to side with Bobby on Glennon though. I heard Cosell break him down and deemed him worthy of a first round pick. I don’t respect many people’s opinion more than I do Cosell’s. The guy really knows his stuff and has been “in the business” forever. I don’t think Glennon is destined to be a journeyman backup or a bonafide star. He could end up much like Freeman: great at times but lacking consistency.

  89. 4everBucsFan Says:

I’ve been trying to figure out who Mike Glennon reminded me of, and I think I’ve figured it out.

He reminds me of a very young Brad Johnson. (?)

  90. Capt. Tim Says:

Westcoast- when you spend 27 million a year, on 4 Probowlers- then Yeah- you’ve chucked the ” build thru the draft” plan- and gone with the” lets steal other teams talent” technique!

Which I have always been fine with!
Just pretentious, after all that” great teams build with great drafts, not free agency” crap he tried to hock for 3 years.

When you trade your top pick for free agents, it means he has totally back pedaled on what he claimed to be his ” plan for a lasting contender” . His new” lasting contender” plan is to sign every pro bowler who hits free agency.

Sort of a screw the future- win now kinda thing. A complete 180′ degree change in philosophy.

Having a bad drafting record( average if one starter per year) will do that to your ” plan”

And don’t try to defend his drafting. If you are going to try- list his picks for the last 5 years.

That’ll change your mind about leaping to his defense.
But pretty happy with his free agent deals! He’s top of the heap with those deals!

  91. Eric Says:

Unitas was just as skinny. Maybe wait till the kid throws his first pass before we jump all over him?

  92. Eric Says:

    @captain Tim,

Well said sir. Looks like the man has come around to our way of thinking!

Now if only we had an experienced first class coaching staff like we used to….

  93. stevek Says:

    Preach it Capt. Tim.

Exactly, Dominick did not draft well over the last 5 years, or well enough, to have this team where it needed to be.

He did so by the Schian hire, two drafts since, and PAYING FAs to come to Tampa.

Dominick has adapted to survive after a CRAPPY start.

  94. Capt. Tim Says:

Eric- lol! You and I were on that soap box dunces Dom’s first ” free agency is the devils work” speech

Jury still out on this coaching staff. John Lynch has stated repeatedly that last years losing streak , was do due to the team being exhausted.

It also was caused by our offensive co-ordinator not adjusting, after defenses learned his scheme!

I hope they both learn from this.

I still prefer an exhausted team- to the team full of quitters we saw the year before.

Hopefully- Schiano finds the happy medium.

If not, he and Dom will both be job shopping. They built a “win now” team. Fourth place won’t work this year!

  95. BigMacAttack Says:

There is a name for “Free Agent Crazy” and its called “Andy Reid”. Somehow he never seems to make it work.

  96. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

I posted this on a more recent article so you would see it Tim but I will post it here too.

Capt. Tim: “Having a bad drafting record( average if one starter per year) will do that to your ” plan”

And don’t try to defend his drafting. If you are going to try- list his picks for the last 5 years. “

I have been extremely unproductive this morning but I do have this:

I went through the Packers, Patriots, Giants, and Bucs last four drafts from 2009 thru 2012 (Kind of silly to count this years draft before they have played a down) and counted how many players are starting on their team from those drafts in total based entirely on their depth charts.

    Patriots: 10
    Packers: 5
    Giants: 7
    Buccaneers: 11

The Bucs have drafted more starters than any of these widely considered “good-drafting” teams.

The overall talent of those starters is up for debate but your argument Tim was that we have had an “average of one starter per year” when in fact it is almost triple that.
