Revis Says Bucs Were Already A Playoff Team

April 22nd, 2013

Revis met the media today and had a lot to say, but he didn’t want to talk about his health.  Greg Schiano and Mark Dominik also weighed in on all things Revis.

The Bucs’ $16 million man opened up to the local media this afternoon and told Bucs fans that he’s just an fancy accessory to a playoff team.

Revis was asked whether his acquisition would lead the Bucs to the playoffs. And Revis replied, “I think they were a playoff team even before me being a part of Buc Nation.”

It was an answer that backed up Revis’ earlier talking about how an attraction of the New Schiano Order was all the stud players already in place at various positions.

Revis was rather mellow but cocky throughout the news conference, talking about his greatness and saying coming to the Bucs was “a great move on my part.”

Revis made it clear he didn’t want to talk about his health, and rockstar general manager Mark Dominik grabbed the reigns at one point on a medical question. Dominik was quick to say he’s very sure Revis is healthy.

“We flew in our top doctors,” Dominik. “We feel very confident or we wouldn’t have done this.”

Greg Schiano said he’ll be working closely with Revis on developing a plan to best use him — on and off an island. “This isn’t a rookie out of college.” Schiano said.

Schiano also said the decision to bring in Revis was a joint move by he and Dominik. “We both felt strongly that this was the best thing for the football team, otherwise we wouldn’t have [brought the deal] to the Glazer family,” Schiano said.

Dominik said a big part of making the trade was the crapshoot nature of having the No. 13 overall pick in the NFL Draft versus an established All-Pro.

“It’s still a draft. … You win in this league with your starters and your stars,” Dominik said. “This was an opportunity to add an elite player at a position of much need for our team. … This is a known commodity that we strongly believe in, and that’s why we pulled the trigger.”

The Bucs might have been a playoff team last year if our pass defense wasn’t so bad. This year I believe our secondary will be a strength. We still need another pass rusher along the D-line (Freeney or a draft pick), a Right Tackle (Clabo maybe?) and a strong side linebacker, but I could see the Bucs challenging for the division this year! Great job by Dom and Coach Schiano!

  2. jason jones Says:

now go sign john abraham or freeny

  3. Buc'N'iT Says:

Love everything about this, and cannot wait for week one

  4. Big Rob Says:

The Bucs will not do anything at SLB. I’ve been saying for weeks that they feel they have their SLB already on the roster. The position at best only plays 1/3 of the game.

  5. Dave Says:

Revis is cocky, but that is good in a CB.

I see them getting LB and D-Line and RT and TE help via draft.

It truly is coming down to Freeman being consistent. He NEEDS to lead them to the playoffs AND win a playoff game this year.

    Thank you Joe,

Joe….you have been all over the Revis trade from the getgo….on behalf of all of us, we appreciate how you’ve covered it. I know its your job…but you do it well and I just wanted to let you know that it shows.

  7. Capt. Tim Says:

BigRob- our SLB only played 30% of the game, because he was terrible. If we had a talented SLB( similar to Cato June), he would be involved in coverage.

You can’t play what you don’t have

  8. Tim Says:

    @Capt.Tim

Actually the limited play at SLB came down to scheme more than anything. We shut down the run last year, so teams elected to pass on us. That put us in alot of nickel and dime packages.

The SAM LB should see more action this year as our D will be more ballanced. I think there are some LBs and TEs that can be had in the 2nd round. That will be my thought process for the Bucs in the draft.

  9. Celly Says:

Kind of off topic, but not really:

The one angle that hasn’t been looked at as far as this Revis trade is the fact that Revis’ presence “should” have a positive effect on M. Williams and Underwood. Having to go up against Revis every day will help them learn the nuances from the defensive perspective from one of the greatest.

  10. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    @Tim

Actually, that was more to do with the looks the opposing offenses were giving. A lot of teams running three wide receiver sets these days. Sure if we had a super star SAM then he would be in instead of David or Foster but they wouldn’t go to three linebacker sets in passing situations for it unless he was good enough to cover a third WR.

If Ronde is back he will essentially be the SAM/Nickel corner. He is a sure tackler and can cover well in the middle.

    ^^Stating opinions up there…just fyi^^

  11. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Whoops, didn’t realize we had a Tim and Capt. Tim. My comment was directed at Capt.

I also didn’t see Tim’s post until after I posted, he said essentially the same thing.

  12. MarineBucsFan Says:

I strongly believe that at this point our focus should be on improving the pass rush, with Revis locked and loaded…..we need to ensure we get the most value out of him being on the field. Put an effective group of pass rushers in front of him and our D will go a long long way!!! I hear some of you mentioning DE’s, another would be nice but im more concerned with the DT’s outside of GMC.

  13. Deminion Says:

    What Is his number ?

  14. FlBoy84 Says:

    @Deminion,
He said he’s still in negotiations with Barron, so it’s up to Mark at this point. Barron was 4 in college, maybe he switches to 44 (which is available) for the right price.

  15. Buc Fan #238 Says:

Revis, Wright, Barron, Goldston… wow, we already have the starters in place before the draft.

Add Barber at nickle… and all of a sudden, the Myron Lewis and L Johnson (is that him?) actually have enough experience to fill in on snaps when they need a break.

It would be ideal to draft a rookie CB in round 2 and bump Johnson out… that way he can learn and step in if any get hurt.

Or, a DT would also be ideal… trade up to draft the DT from Alabama.

  16. PRBucFan Says:

    DT or CB first pick

  17. Eric Says:

    The draft is a crapshoot?

    Who woulda thunk it.

  18. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Unless they sign a DT before the draft, our first pick has got to be DT. No other choice. SLB or CB in round 3. The other in Rd 4, along with Landry Jones.

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Here’s my updated mock

    Round 2, Pick 11 (43)
DT Sylvester Williams (was coached by Butch Davis)

    Round 3, Pick 11 (73)
CB David Amerson or CB Darius Slay

    Round 4, Pick 15 (112)
    QB Landry Jones

    Round 4, Pick 29 (126) (From Patriots)
    OLB Chase Thomas

    Round 5, Pick 14 (147)
    DE Lavar Edwards

    Round 6, Pick 13 (181)
    FB Lonnie Pryor

Round 6, Pick 28 (196) (From Broncos through Eagles)
    TE Ryan Otten

  20. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    Bonzai,

I don’t know everyone on there, but like who I know. Lonnie would be a steal. Great all around back, and epitome of a Buccaneer man.

    Where is Tyler Wilson slotted?
