Falcons Cut Veteran Stars; Are Bucs Considering?

March 1st, 2013

The Falcons waved goodbye to John Abraham, Michael Turner and cornerback Dunta Robinson today, which isn’t exactly Bucs news, but it does impact their division rival and Bucs fans should take note.

One could make a case that the Bucs could use all three of these guys on their roster.

Obviously, Robinson would fill a huge need at cornerback. Abraham, who is hoping to rack up at least one more great season to help lock up a Hall of Fame entry, would be a sweet addition as a versatile pass-rush specialist. He’ll also come cheaper than Michael Bennett, which might intrigue the Bucs if they want Da’Quan Bowers to get more snaps then he would if Bennett is re-signed.

Michael Turner, well, Joe’s not lobbying for him. But if the Bucs want to upgrade their backup running back position and have a true short-yardage back, Turner would be perfect.

Not sure I’d want any of those guys on our team. Abraham is an old man, Robinson doesn’t seem to fit the Schiano mold, and DUI Turner seems to have run out of gas.

  2. Scarf ace Says:

No to all three. They cut turner because he can’t get two or three yards any more. All three were part time players all year can’t count on them at all

  3. DallasBuc Says:

Robinson is better than any CB on our roster. Abraham is an obvious upgrade over Teo nesheim and turner is indeed a legit short yardage and solid backup RB. All would be reasonable for the right price. Each one has a knock of some kind but what budget FA pickup doesn’t?

  4. Zack Says:

If Dunta Robinson keeps headbutting people, he’s gonna be hurt and/or suspended for more games than he plays. None of these guys are worth much more than the veteran minimum at his point. Pass.

  5. 4everBucsFan Says:

none, ninguno, nessuno, никто, keener, 没有 Méiyǒu, なし Nashi, however way you want to say it. I don’t think Atlanta is worried about anybody in our division grabbing any of those has beens, in fact they’re probably hoping we do.

  6. Matt B Says:

I’ll take Robinson and William Gay released by the Cards today. Both upgrades to what we have now at DB.

  7. Jrock Says:

It would be worth a few million just to hear the ATL fans moaning about us having Abraham on our roster. He led the Falcons in sacks last season… just saying

  8. the_buc_realist Says:

We can lose without those guys

  9. PRBucFan Says:

Bennett better not go to ATL, that’s all I’m saying.

  10. SirustheVirus Says:

Keenan Lewis & Cary Williams. Anything else would be uncivilized 😛

  11. Macabee Says:

When we start taking dibs on players a playoff team doesn’t want, you start to understand why they’re a playoff team and we’re not. The next thing you know we’ll be talking about David Carr as back-up QB.

PRBUCfan, I don’t know if you were kidding or not about Bennett going to Atlanta or not, because there is one writer on Bleacher Report says they are very interested in Bennett! Dom can’t let that happen!

  12. Teacherman777 Says:

Abraham AND Dwight Freeney to spell and mentor Clayborne and Bowers?

Now, that would be crazy, but very cool too. And I guarantee they would add 10 sacks combined to our team.

I like the guy who mentioned Dunta Robinson headbutting people.

Both times he played us this year, Dougie knocked him out!

He has had way too many concussions. He needs to retire.

Turner was a good RB. But I don’t think we need him.

  13. HFXBUC Says:

So it’s now official one of the ‘Joe’s’ is Jon Gruden and hates the Bucs. Could you name 3 old more washed up FAs? Terrible. Add that threesome and Welker and we’re an old team on the downside with Cap issues. It’s like you have no idea what’s going on.

  14. 76buc76 Says:

Abraham I’d take.He could even sign for less to stick it to his old team.2 year’s 3.5 mill per with no bonus. So we can release him at the end of the year.Without him costing us dead money cap hit. He’ll get as many sack’s as Bennett.Playing part time then grab a run stuffer DE later in the draft. All these team’s restructuring contract’s is hallarious. They will be sorry later when they release these guy’s and get stuck with 20mill in dead money.Unlike Vick WOW he saved the franchise by restructuring his contract. The dead money they would have absorbed if they released him.Would have crippled the Eagles.Way more of a sacrifice than Brady. The Pat’s cannot release him in the second last or the last year of his contract. It would mean 18 or 9 million in dead money

William must have been banned awwwwwww loser get a life

  17. 4everBucsFan Says:

    @ 76buc76

How do you know if Abraham will get at least 10 sacks or more? He came off the field for roughly a third of Atlanta’s defensive snaps in 2012, and will turn 35 in May. That’s a pretty big leap of faith for a guy who is now playing part-time.

  18. Curmudgeon Says:

Trivia: Abraham was drafted by the Jets with one of the #1 picks the Bucs gave up for Meshawn. How’s that trade look now?

  19. BOb Says:

Looking pretty good! Got a superbowl out of it.

  20. BOb Says:

Unless thats not the ultimate goal here

  21. FLBoyInDallas Says:

We definitely don’t need to be wasting roster spots on guys who have a year or two left. That’s a Gruden thing…not a Dominik/Schiano thing. No thank you to all of ’em, unless perhaps Robinson can be had for a mid-level contract on a year or two prove-it deal. And that’s if, and only if, other free agent CB’s who are ranked higher won’t come to Tampa.

  22. Curmudgeon Says:

BOb, I think they could’ve gotten it without the Meshawn trade. Those 2 #1 picks could’ve been used for players that would’ve been around longer and possibly helped prevent the descent into oblivion. 10 years after the Bucs SB, Abraham is still playing. Meshawn is running his mouth on TV.

Hypothetically, if I had to choose between winning one SB and then going into the shi*ter for 5 years, or remaining competitive and in the playoff hunt for several years, with a chance at the SB, I’d choose the latter. Trading 2 #1 picks plus the stupid drafting of Gruden and Allen turned the franchise back into a pathetic joke.

  23. 76buc76 Says:

Cur you are off your rocker. Some people will go their whole life without seeing their team win a superbowl. You should be an eagle fan.I’d rather finish last 9 year’s in a row to win a superbowl in the tenth year.

  24. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

Amen Joe. Not only would they make the team better this year, but the depth, veteran presense and excitement of having a few names on the roster to talk about too.

It would be exciting. The young guys could learn from some real pros for a change.

  25. Patrick Says:

John Abraham would make sense. Clayborn is coming back from an injury and Bowers could still be in trouble with the law and/or Goodell. We some quality depth.

Still looks GREAT, the Bucs got a Superbowl, ATL do not.

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

If these guys are willing to be backups and not play for a ton of money (probably not very likely), I don’t have a problem with it. As we have learned every year, you have to have quality depth, and these 3 positions seem to be the ones we get hit hardest with injuries year after year.

Turner is still a damn good short yardage back, and he could be a decent back to give Doug a rest. Robinson has always been one of my least favorite players because I see him as a dirty player since he always seems to lead with his head. However, after last year, I’ll pretty much take anyone at CB. He could be terrible and still be a huge upgrade over anyone we had in 2012. Abrahan can give us some depth, but I hope we aren’t stupid enough to believe he is an adequate replacement for Michael Bennett. As a backup, I can definitely see him helping us.

  28. PRBucFan Says:

    @mac

    Nah I wasn’t kidding. 🙁

The Bennett brothers going to ATL instead of here would be a disaster.

  29. Vic66 Says:

Why don’t one of you nasayers ask Freeman if he thinks Abraham can play some football? He still has enough gas in his tank to knock a lot of buts on the grass. He will not last long in FA.

  30. Macabee Says:

    Hawaiian,

Turner was a good short yardage back. It is now being reported that he was released because he couldn’t pass the team physical. He has had nagging groin injuries that he’s played with the last 2years, but evidently was getting worse.

I hope the Bucs take a look at Chris Ivory. He’s a RFA likely to get a UDFA tender. If offered a contract, the Bucs would not have to give up a draft pick.

  31. justice born Says:

all those stiffs are recycled garbage Turner is the fat running back with a bad pillbag and the other two lames wouldn’t do anything but ghe get in the way of persueing better players. The Gruden way has passed and left the place stinking it’s airing out now lets bring in youthful contenders not old pretenders.

  32. Tomcin Says:

I have a feeling That Abrham will take a pay cut & resign with the buzzards.

  33. SirustheVirus Says:

Bring Abraham. He is still playing at a good level at 34. He’s better than anyone else of our DE 10 sacks/6FF he’s still got some in him. 2 year deal would be good. Osi would be nice also. Clayborn Bowers 1st&2nd down and Abraham&Osi on 3rd. They’d both me mentors and cheap I think.

  34. Ladyz Says:

Rummer has it Dirty Birds will give Abraham a 1 year deal to come back after FA. Now Chris Ivory is a FA worthy of a good look see.. That dude can still play.
