Watson Award Backs Up Dominik’s Claim

November 29th, 2012

Back in September, Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik went out on a limb for Dekoda Watson, calling him a “Pro Bowl caliber special teams player” during a radio interview, but then Watson went out and choked and earned a Sabby against the Giants a few days later.

Well, now it seems things have come full cirlce for Watson. The NFL selected him as Special Teams Player of the Month for November, per today’s announcement.

Joe typically finds these monthly and weekly awards are little more than PR stunts or ways to garner more sponsorship. However, the special teams award is at least intriguing, given that it often goes to a relatively unknown player like Watson.

It’s probably appropriate now to add Watson to the long list of potential Bucs Pro Bowlers for the 2012 season. Squads are named after Week 15.

As for Watson’s game, it was disappointing to Joe that Watson wasn’t able to win the backup “SAM” linebacker job from Adam Hayward, and Watson hasn’t materialized as much of a pass rusher in his third season. But he’s still just 24 years old, and as a special teams stud, he’s surely been more than worth the seventh-round pick Dominik used on him back in 2010.

Crazy coincidence, as soon as I went to vote in the Bucs players into the ProBowl. I see the announcements for David and Dekota. He has a lot of updside, and Id be content if this 7th rounder could end up a solid ST player over the duration of his career.

i just wish he had the Awareness to block that one guy on Ronde Barber’s INT….because Ronde would have scored a TD and broken the All-Time Record (that would have put him in..the Hall of Fame)

Still can’t help but wonder if he doesn’t rough the kicker, if they would have won that game. 14 point swing there

    Hes soooooooo fast.

I saw him sprint WITH Julio Jones.

For real. He can fly as a sprinter.

I guess he just doesnt have knack for tackling as a LB. I wish we could see him more. But the coaches have seen him a lot. So….

As an athlete. He is a great player to have with us. I just wish we could use him him on some stunts where can curl in from the outside and sprint right at the QB. Like how he blocks punts!

And u know why he missed that ither block??

Cuz he was toooo fast! He got there too early.

I like the awards. You are right about the PR, but it isn’t limited to just sponsors. There are a lot of so-called Bucs fans that only watch games and pay no attention to anything other than nightly news. This let’s people like that know a players has gotten better. And there have been a lot of those this year. Sooner or later, maybe they’ll show stronger interest in the team as a result.

I think Dekota doesn’t get playing time because of his draft status..He’s to talented not to be on the field..I agree with Joe I wanted to see him get the start over hayward..
