Quincy Black’s Season Is Over

November 13th, 2012

It was no surprise this afternoon when the Bucs released word that starting strong side linebacker Quincy Black was placed on injured reserve, meaning his season is finished.

A nasty head-nick collision Sunday left Black hospitalized with nerve issues in his left arm, “complications,” as Greg Schiano called them.

Is this a big loss for the Bucs? Joe doesn’t suspect the team will miss a beat, though Black surely was playing better than he did last season.

Black signed a five-year, $29 million contract before the 2011 campaign, and his future years are no longer guaranteed. Though likely they would be guaranteed if Black’s latest injury ends his career. It’ll be worth keeping any eye on that potential financial situation, as it relates to the Bucs’ ability and desire to spend next season.

Well I hope he gets well soon. It’s kind of hard to see him playing under the same salary next year. He will probably have to take a paycut to remain with the team.

  2. SteveK Says:

    Get well soon, Quincy.

He was really playing hard out there. I hope he makes a 100% recovery. I believe Quincy was turning the corner.

  3. Have A Nice Day Says:

This blows pretty bad. It is never good to lose a starter.

  4. BUCS FAN Says:

Get well Soon! “Q” we We’ll Soon. We will miss you!!! Best Regards

  5. guns4roses Says:

I wish a swift and complete recovery for Mr Black. Time for Dakota Watson to step up.

Joe, who else might be getting reps at SAM?

  6. Macabee Says:

First let me wish Quincy a full recovery and his football career is in no way jeopardized by this injury.

But Joe you said something that either I didn’t read correctly or I didn’t understand about player contracts when a career-ending injury is involved.

Quincy signed a 5yr 29mil contract with 11.5mil guaranteed. That gaurantee is fully satisfied at year end and the Bucs would have no further financial obligation beyond this year.

Are you saying that if his injury is career-ending that the contract may be fully gauranteed for the 5yr duration? I honestly don’t know the answer!

Sending Black to I.R. should help the team evaluate its roster at the outside LB position.. Black was not going to return next year either way now we get to see the back ups D.Watson/ A.Hayward and find out if either can hold the dtarting job next year imo. The answer will be no both better suited to Sp.teams. I expect the team to draft the eventual starting SLB next year ill be keeping my eye on Arthur Brown of Kstate… Dom has a track record of drafting from his Fav program

  8. Adam L Says:

Q.B. caught a boatload of flack last year for his play after signing a big contract but the guy really seemed to turn it around this year. I can remember seeing him make several tackles on swing passes in the open field by himself. I don’t think Black was as bad as the fans/media made him out to be, but it can’t be hammered home enough how much DAMAGE Raheem did this crop of draftees.

I have given Mark Dominik a ration of crap for his picks, but I couldn’t imagine in my wildest, sweatiest adolescent slumber how bad Raheem poisoned this group and with every win, Schiano is slowly untying that knot.

  9. Papawill13 Says:

We have to release him. SLB has always been a low need position for Tampa and it would not be hard at all to replace Black with a cheaper guy and get the same production.

We need to Resign Bennett and Freeman (maybe Williams also). And we need to sign a CB or FS in FA as well as Draft a player at those positions.

  10. Veezee Says:

Former Buccaneer Quincy Black. Hope he gets better but he’s a trivia answer now.

  11. buxter Says:

I was never Qincy’s biggest fan but let’s not ignore the fact he was playing well above expectations. His effort last year set the bar so low a centipede would have to duck.

Coaching and the system does matter.

Will we resign him after this season if healthy? Maybe, maybe not.

By all accounts he is a good team mate and better guy. Let’s just wish him a full recovery. Football can wait.

  12. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

It sounds like someone purchased an insurance policy in case he’s injured. In the case of a head injury and the state of pro football with traumatically induced dementia, it’s likely that Quincy has played his last game.

I don’t see where it would be held against the salary cap if an insurance policy is paid.

Jarvis Jones looks pretty good from Georgia.

  13. skp Says:

i wish quincy well, but it’s interesting that the contract situation (as described by joe) basically incentivizes black against attempting a comeback. his options are:
    a) get back to football shape, get cut by the bucs, never see a $5m salary again
    b) call it a day and get the last $15m guaranteed in an injury settlement

if i were quincy i would hang up my cleats and start taking finance classes

  14. Andrew Says:

I was not a Quincy Black supporter, but I didnt want to see him go down with a season ending and possibly a career ending injuring. so I kinda have mixed feelings on this situation

  15. Andrew Says:

but anyway. my best wishes go out to Quincy.

  16. J-VilleBucs84 Says:

    Joe

With the lost of Black should we look into Aaron Maybin? Jets just cut him

  17. Brandon Says:

Anybody that didn’t see that Black was playing the run this season like a pro bowler, has no idea what they’ve been looking at and shouldn’t even comment about football/

Run stopping Sam LBs that are on the field anywhere from 33-50% of all snaps definitely shouldn’t be making what Black was making but he was excellent in attacking the TE in the run game and forcing runs back inside. I hope he comes back at a lesser pay next season and continues his run of success.

I would like to see the Bucs kill two birds with one stone in the draft next season to replace him if he doesn’t come back. Finding a guy like Oregon’s Dion Jordan that could playt the Sam on running downs and put his hand on the ground and excel as a speed edge rusher on passing downs with be a major addition for the defense. I always thought that that guy would/should be Dakoda Watson but for whatever reason it just hasn’t happened yet.

  18. Sneedy16 Says:

    @J-VilleBucs84

He was cut because he sucked at supporting the run. Not a Buc Man.

  19. Pete Dutcher Says:

I feel for the guy, but here’s how I view it…he signed a big contract, played horrible the first year of it, and then he only plays half a season the next year (although he played better).

So in reality, the Bucs only got their money’s worth for half a season in the last two seasons.

I’m not saying we should replace him, but if a young guy steps in and does well enough to take the position from him, Black could be trade bait next year.

  20. Pete 422 Says:

I’d like to see Dakota Watson get the nod. He may add a new element to the pass rush and he is a play maker.

  21. J-VilleBucs84 Says:

    Sneedy

Yeah well this team was also last in the run defense last year, but we’re #1 this year, so coaching could play a part in him sucking with the Jets. Jets are falling apart anyways. Plus we could use him in blitzing packages as a situational pass rusher. He’s young and probably cheap to pick up. Black sucked lasted year, but has been way better this year. Maybin just might need to be coached up better.

  22. Joe Says:

    J-Ville:

With the lost of Black should we look into Aaron Maybin? Jets just cut him

Highly doubt it. Maybin is a defensive end in a four-man front. He was only a “linebacker” by name only playing a 34 defense. His bread and butter is pass rushing and he hasn’t been adept at that since his junior year at Penn State.

Joe’s of the opinion that players cut in November from bad teams are unemployed for a reason.

  23. SacBucs Says:

    Get well Qb..
I wanted to see DW get a shot but not like this. Dam

    Full recovery 58

  24. 941-Bucs Says:

I am on the fence about who should replace him tho. You’ve got Watson who is a great pass rushing LBer but is very moderate in pass pro. Then you have Hayward who is a mediocre player at any position but he has tons of experience at all 3 lber spots.

If you go with Hayward then you have to go through another question. Put him at SAM or put him at MIKE and let Foster slide over (to his natural spot) and run with it that way?

I like Watson a lot and think he has more talent then Black or Hayward.
