No Excuse For Jackson Getting Caught

October 21st, 2012

Vincent Jackson, on the second Bucs offensive play after the halftime rest (the first play was a run), caught a pass from Josh Freeman and had a free romp 80 yards to the end zone.

But somehow, the fit, long-striding Jackson, the Bucs’ $11 million man, got run down from more than 20 yards away by Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins at the Saints 1 yard line.

Joe’s never seen such a collapse of will from a player in his prime. Nobody can make an argument that Jackson was tired. Was it his calf that showed up on the injury report last week but was supposed to be no problem? Maybe. But Jackson sure looked good after that play en route to racking up seven catches for 216 yards and a touchdown.

Joe has a theory; Jackson didn’t want it as much as Jenkins.

But it wasn’t Jackson’s fault the Bucs couldn’t put the ball in the end zone against the vaunted Saints defense from the 1 yard line.

Game over.

Vincent was on the injury report for a injured calf….I would say that would have something to do with it

  2. Killian Says:

It doesn’t even matter that Jackson got caught. The Bucs should have put the ball in the endzone from the 2 yard line with 4 attempts. What a terrible loss, culminating with a terrible call that should have been illegal contact on the DB.

  3. Snook Says:

Uh, ever thought of the fact that Jenkins is simply faster than Jackson?

  4. Stranger Says:

Yea, I’m fine with Jackson getting caught since he was limited with a calf injury and some DBs actually have speed in the NFL. But the playcalling that followed was a straight up sin.

  5. ryan Says:

This site is blaming someone other than Blount for not getting the TD.

  6. Stick Says:

Jackson got caught from like 35 yards away. Agree Joe. Weaksauce.

  7. Snook Says:

Wow. We’re really calling out Jackson here?

Not the coaching staff pulling their good RB to put in some sorry azz guy who can’t hit a hole?

  8. Squadoosh Says:

Pereira just came on and explained the call was correct. When freeman left the pocket the defender was allowed to have contact with Williams. He then could not be the first person to touch the ball…pushed out or not.
Sucks but apparantly the right call.

  9. Pedro meneghini Says:

Ok, he’s 6’5″. He’s a big wide receiver, but come on! Take that ball to the endzone dude! There is no excuses!

  10. Smitty Says:

Jackson broke the team record for receiving yards, today. But, yeah…TOTALLY his fault they lost.

  11. BucWild007 Says:

Strained calf, he was pulling up near the end!

  12. BonesMahoney Says:

Jackson missed 2 days of practice with a calf injury, seems like a good excuse to me. But yeah, let’s blame him instead of the 4 terrible play calls and running a RB out there that has struggled in short yardage his whole career.

  13. Snook Says:

No, squadoosh, not the right call. The WR can touch it first as long as the ball wasn’t in the air… which Pereira didn’t mention.

Freeman hadn’t released the ball before Williams re-established. Pereira is just covering for his new boss… the NFL.

Just another Katrina call. If that would’ve gone against the Saints, there’d be an hour special about how it was the wrong call.

  14. raphael Says:

    @ Smitty lol excellent !

  15. d-money Says:

Joe i swear to god. Every time i think i’ll give you another shot…i figure ahh i’ll see what joe has to say about this game. Then i read this lousy BS and remember why i dont read your garbage anymore.

Jackson ran 90 yards and a faster man with a good angle caught him.
    End of story.

How about complaining about the sorry coverage from our secondary or the crappy pass rush all day? No you come out and bash the one guy who played his ass off all freaking game.

Try putting down the beers before you write next time. You sound like a fool.

Hey, D-Money, don’t come on here and insult Joe. You think Jackson doesn’t think he should have scored? He should have. The other guy had more will. Painful to accept but true. We’ve all heard the expression that someone “wanted it more.” Joe didn’t blame Jackson for losing the game at all, but he should have scored. No excuses. Might want to work on your reading skills, pal. –Joe.

  16. Squadoosh Says:

If the former head of Nfl officiating is not giving the right explanation who are you supposed to get it from?

  17. K1ngAdroc Says:

o-line and RB gotta punch that in with 4 attempts from the 1. We lost the game right there.
Vjax did nothing but make plays ALL DAY! What a stupid post by joe

  18. Patrick Says:

I don’t care what the reason is…….it was a piss poor effort by Jackson. ONE YARD away. He knew how close he was, he could’ve made the little ounce of extra effort needed to get the TD.

  19. bucyea Says:

this loss in on SHIANO!!! His stubborness will get him outta the NFL quickly if he doesn’t get over himself. Running the same play 3 consecutive times to prove how physical you think you are is ASSININE. I love Blount as a RB, BUT EVERYONE in TB knows short yardage in NOT his specialty. Shiano better get over his “I know-it-all” attitude or he’ll be back at Rutgers real soon. And I didnt even touch on the horrid, 3-man rush defense, or the ill-timed pathetic blitz’s we TRY. I’ve yet to see one of our blitz’s hit home, we are NO GOOD at blitzing for whatever reason. Insanity-doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

  20. Orlandobucfan Says:

Yeah I have to agree wether he gets caught or not it has to fall on Blount getting his touches and not hitting the hole and not willing himself in.

  21. Kennedy Says:

Agree Joe. No excuses. Saw this live and Jackson didn’t give 100 percent. 98 percent didn’t cut it. Other guy wanted it more.

  22. Andrew Says:

Joe if your down on Jackson for that one play then your not looking at the bigger picture. should he have got in, maybe, maybe not, but not to punch it in from the 2 yard line on 4 attempts is more inexcusable then the Jackson play. plus the guy set a team record, so I have to say your blame is misplaced.

  23. Tampa2 Says:

Whoa Whoa wait a second. No blame going to twinkle toes (your boy) LG Blount? None? Wow..interesting. I do not want to hear anyone, ever, talk about how great this guy is. Doug Martin starts and gets the most carries for a reason. You can bet your a– that moving forward his role will only increase. Please, pretty please with sugar on top try to explain how LG doesn’t seem to know how to hit the hole. Without a doubt the WORST short yardage back I have ever seen.

  24. KJ Says:

Is this post a joke? Without Jackson we wouldn’t have even been in this game. He is BY FAR our best offensive player. And yes, shocker, in the Florida heat, he was gassed running full speed 100 yards down the field and Jenkins, a former first round pick, had the better angle to run him down.

Luckily, we have a 240 pound back that this website often hails as an under-used player to pound the rock in from 2 yards away. Unfortantely, he is complete garbage and couldn’t hit a hole if the world depended on it. This is all on play calling and Mr. Blount – not VJax.

  25. d-money Says:

Hey Joe my reading skills are fine.

You took the time to write a pointless post slamming the guy who played his ass off and had the best recieving game on Bucs history.

“no excuse for Jackson getting caught”

If you are going to point fingers that’s probably is not the place you want to start.

Like i said post like this are why i no longer visit your site.

  26. Tampa2 Says:

Get real bucyea quit making excuses for #27. He’s 250 pounds. He’s not shifty or lightning fast anyhow, if he can’t figure out his role in this league then he will not last long. What exactly IS his specialty? He can’t play on third down, he isn’t good in short yardage. Sure let’s make all kinds of concessions for him..

  27. Shannon "Chief" Cherry Says:

Total garbage article. VJax was playing injured, still breasted without his full speed. But to say VJax didn’t want it as bad as Jenkins is hogwash. VJax not at fault for loss. Play of DBs and LaGarrette Blount/Mike Sullivan redzone play/play calling is to blame.

  28. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@Dmoney – For a guy who doesn’t visit the site, you keep coming back. It’s sad that you can’t handle just criticism for a Buccaneer. It makes no difference what his total stats were. THe play is what it is.

    See you soon …

  29. Pruritis Ani Says:

I they would have scored on the subsequent play or plays, it wouldn’t have been such a glaring issue.

  30. vic Says:

You guys (not Joe) are roping in an awful lot of baggage to straight criticism of Jackson losing out on a key play.

Jackson was a monster the rest of the game. The guy is not hurt. Please

  31. bucswin Says:

Hey Bucswin, you’ve already been banned for your hate-spreading. Funny though how you keep coming back over and over again. Joe’s opinion here reflected a large percentage of fans’, and it’s on the mark. Joe is not responsible for others reading far too much into it. –Joe

  32. BucFan20 Says:

I stil can’t get over how everyone thinks that at that time that 1 TD changes the out come of this game at that point. After that , time changes everything. It’s like saying “if I got up 5 mins earlier or later I would not have gotten a tickect. There would have been a point after then a kick off. After that they may have scored again,or held the ball for longer. More likely than not this last drive would never be. We lost because they made less mistakes and did what they had to. We gave Brees all day to throw. History shows, give Brees that much time he will clean your clock.

  33. espo Says:

He should have scored but it shouldn’t reflect his desire in any of our eyes. He got chased down by a faster man with an angle. I just wish he had an eye on the video board and cut inside.

Shame on u for ripping the man’s character based on a physical defeat.

  34. Hawaiian Buc Says:

For you to say that one man wanted it more is very presumptive. I don’t buy that for one second, and no one else should either. So you don’t think Jackson wanted to have a 96 yard TD reception more than Malcolm Jenkins wanted a tackle on the stat sheet? Really? Unless you are blind, anyone could see Jackson wasn’t running right, but to say it was from a lack of effort or want to is ridiculous beyond words. When Ronde Barber got run down from behind against Cleveland in 2010, was it also from him not wanting it as much as the other guy?

  35. SensibleBuc Says:

Disagree Joe. Great effort by Jenkins and nothing more. Blount on the other hand…SMH.

  36. espo Says:

Joe, I’m sure you want Rachel Watson more than whoever she is or is not dating. Take an angle and chase her down before she makes it to the safety of the endzone. Pointless analogy but I’ve amused myself.

  37. Ian P Says:

I looked these up hoping they would be different, but oh well, here are the numbers.
    Jackson ran a 4.46 (back in 2005).

    Jenkins ran a 4.52 (in 2009).

Jackson should have outran him. Period. Unless he’s injured there is simply no reason he shouldn’t have put his foot on gas there at the end when he saw Jenkins closing in. He could clearly see the defender there because he changed how he was holding the ball. I don’t understand how he sees Jenkins there but doesn’t run just a little bit harder. Can’t comprehend it.

  38. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Ian P,

Let me help you comprehend it. First of all, that was 7 years ago, and I’m pretty sure Jackson didn’t miss 2 days of practice with a calf strain before he ran the 40. Second, they usually don’t run the 40 in pads. Third, they usually don’t run the 40 in the Florida heat. Fourth, the last time I checked, the distance of the 40 yard dash is timed over 40 yards. The last time I checked, 95 yards is more than 40 yards. Fifth, usually when a guy has the longest reception in the history of a franchise, one would find other things to complain about than this. But then again, this is how things work in this day and age. People aren’t happy unless they can point the finger and blame people. Totally ridiculous.

  39. menofear Says:

C,mon guys….. Eazy on Jackson… Dude got over 200 yrds. OL was control by Saints Dl all day long…..We r movin in the right direction……Great game…

Give Dom and and HC sometime to put team together. Defense will be there as well……
