Strong Reviews For McCoy, Gilberry

August 14th, 2012

Former Bucs DE Steve White (1996-2001) has studied film of the Bucs-Dolphins game and weighed in on the defensive line play.

White, who doesn’t sugarcoat, came away encouraged, so he told Ronnie Lane on WDAE-AM 620. And White says fans shouldn’t worry about Gerald McCoy’s performance, if he can stay healthy.

“[I saw] what I’ve seen for the last couple of years, especially last year before he got hurt, he’s got that phenomenal get-off and he’s getting penetration in the backfield and he’s cleaned up some things with his pass rush,” White said. “Once again, it comes down to this, if he plays 16 games, he’s going to be a great player for this year. If he gets hurts, then it’s all for naught. But he’s got everything you want for a 3-technique right now when you watch him on the field.”

White also was encouraged by Michael Bennett mixing in more speed rush, and “I think Wallace Gilberry’s going to stick and I think he’s actually going to get some good playing time,” White said.

Gilberry, a defensive end, had 2 1/2 sacks and forced two fumbles for Kansas City last season. He didn’t miss a game for the Chiefs over the past three seasons in a reserve role.

Joe’s pleased to hear good things from White, but Joe’s sort of numb to all talk when it comes to the defensive line as a unit. It’s been so long since the Bucs have stopped the run or generated a pass rush that isn’t at the bottom of the NFL. Joe has to see it happen in a few real games to become a believer.

To my amateur eye that pic looks like an arm tackle and a torn biceps ready to happen.

I agree with you Joe. I to liked what I saw for the small amount of snaps the D-line played but I want to see them put it together for a whole 60 minutes in a game that actually counts before i get my hopes up.

That’s the whole point. Our line has showed flashes
    But has been terribly inconsistent

  4. Buxter Says:

Joe, all the consternation and hand wringing over the DL’s perfomance is a bit shortsighted.

You forgot to include the LB corps.

    Joe here,

@Buxter – Joe didn’t forget the LBs. This post is about the D-line.

I thought the D and D-line sucked in the first half…Miami drove straight down the field the first possesion and missed a field goal..mostly Maimi stopped themselves…However the O looks like they have something to build on..

  7. Buxter Says:

A pale attempt at levity Joe. I’ve got all the optimism of a Cubs fan when speaking about our DL.

FWIW, nice to hear Gilberry might be serviceable rotation guy since it’s coming from White.

So now our players are expected to tackle without using their arms. That’ll work out.

Actually it was only the first series that they did poorly on. The steadily improved after that.

I have been saying for a while that the defense will need time to come together…but by the same token, we should be excited and verbal when we see good things happening. I know…it’s hard to do after what we witnessed last year. These are the times when we have to dig deep inside ourselves as fans, just as the team needs to as players.

No Pete, the picture *looks like* an “arm tackle”. You know, the same tackle that has derailed GMC’s career thus far.

I don’t care how GMC makes a tackle, as long as he makes it and can stay healthy.

-Roy miller was just carted off the field

  12. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

I disagree that the picture looks that way. There is too much distance for it to be that for sure. As he closed he could have changed his reach.

  13. Mike J Says:

Gilberry had 7 sacks in only two starts in 2010. Played with his hand down, too.

  14. Mike J Says:

SteveK , That play made me wince, though. I hope the surgeons did a good job stapling that tendon in his arm down.

Sounds like Miller just had heat exhaustion…….apparently came back out under his own power.

They can give up all the yards they want to I could careless about that… the only statistic i care about is the big 0 they gave up in points. Thats all that matters. Bend but dont break.

  17. ClayBURN94 Says:

You cant judge the defense based on the first preseason because 1) They played a basic defense so didnt play much of the real scheme, 2) Didnt gameplan for the Dolphins at all, and 3)Had some defensive starters missing(Talib,Barron). Also you have to take into account this is a new defensive scheme. And people complaining about GMC arm tackling need to hush because hes just trying anyway to stop a guy moving at 100 miles an hour. Hard to just stop and think about how you want to tackle a guy.
