Josh Freeman weighs in on red zone strategy

One thing cool about the Bucs of not-so-old was with Mike Alstott and a beat-down defense, the Bucs simply dictated how the game would be played.

That’s exactly what Greg Schiano wants the Bucs to return to: smashmouth, in-your-face offense and a smothering defense.

In the first test of the New Schiano Order, Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman gave the exam a passing grade.

“All day, all day,” Freeman said about how the Bucs wanted to impose their will on the Dolphins. “Coach has talked about how great teams run the ball in the red zone. We definitely did that. It’s good to see us go for it on fourth down and put it on the offensive line and see them and LeGarrette [Blount] get the job done.”

This is the type of team Schiano wants. It’s the type of team Bucs fans have pined for after years of Chucky-and-duck offense and that steaming pile of hot mess from last season.

    While I agree that it’s nice to see us finally doing something that we were completely incapable of last season, I suggest you temper your enthusiasm, as this was merely a preseason game against a team that will be fortunate to win 6 games this season. We imposed our will on the Dolphins? I don’t call it imposing our will on anyone when we let Reggie Bush run up the gut for 12 yards or allow passing plays of 31, 22 and 21 yards. most of which happened when our first & second defense was in.
    We have a helluva long way to go here, I’m just glad we have Coach Schiano here now. If I took anything positive from this game, it was that these guys seem to really be buying into what he’s doing. I was more impressed with him than anything last night. If we’re to right this ship, he seems to be the best ship’s captain to do it! It’s far too soon to say we’re imposing anything on anybody.

Some games you could see that the other team was ready to get on the bus as early as late third quarter.But I’m old-school; I like the run game.

    Here’s what is important. Schiano did what he said he would do. How many coaches have we heard from that wanted their team to perform a certain way and then abandon it in the first quarter. Too many! Seems to me the most important thing last night was not that we beat Miami but that the coach and his team executed what he believes is a way to win and he didn’t back down. I also liked the challenge of the Miami TD that was ultimately overturned. It showed that the coach was going to do his job to see that his team had the best opportunity to win. And the defense came through with a stop.

    Sorry, Coach had nothing to do with it, it was an automatic review, as dictated by new league replay rules. All turnovers & scores will be reviewed. I think the turnovers part of that rule is the new addition, but not certain. Besides that, I think it was inside the 2 Min mark, where the coach can’t challange, even if he wants to. Still, on the plus side, if the TD had been upheld, we wouldn’t have lost a time out.

    Speaking of time outs…anyone else notice the lack of time outs caused by the OC not getting the play in fast enough ? I don’t miss that a bit!

    @jb,

    I don’t think anyone is putting us in the Super Bowl, but it was simply a nice start. Compared to the miserable excuse for football we had to watch last year, it was the greatest game ever played. You have to put our enthusiasm in context.

    I disagree that we can only win 6 games. Although you may very well be right, I believe we have the talent to win more. We are going to shorten a lot of games, which will keep our questionable defense fresh. You notice we only had 1 full possession in the first quarter last night? We are going to tire out a lot of defenses with our running game. Last night’s game plan was very vanilla, but you can bank on us opening up the offense quite a bit once these games count. Nobody in our division has a good defense, which plays right into what we want to do. The ultimate key is going to be staying healthy, because we do not have very good depth at most positions.
