Grimm Reality

August 31st, 2012

Thanks for your service, No. 35.

UPDATE: Though Joe is skeptical to take agents at their word — agents have agendas — Cody Grimm’s agent says he has no knowledge of Grimm getting cut.

Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune spoke with Grimm’s agent this afternoon and was told that he has not heard anything from the Bucs.

@RCummingsTrib: Reports of Cody Grimm’s release may be premature. Neither Grimm nor his agent have heard of a release, according to agent Eric Metz.

So the plot thickens. Has Grimm been released or not? Surely if he was, Joe assumes the Bucs would have said something to either Grimm or his agent. Stay tuned …

This one surprises Joe a bit.

Cody Grimm is a good football player. Not always a healthy football player, but if Grimm is healthy (like he is now) and your fourth safety on the depth chart, then you’ve probably got a very solid safety group. Perhaps the only time since mid-2008 that the Bucs displayed consistent moments of run defense was when Grimm was firing in the box.

But the New Schiano Order disagrees with Joe, and Bucs icon John Lynch. The Bucs’ flagship radio station, WDAE-AM 620, is reporting that Grimm was cut.

Grimm was the most experienced safety on the roster. Perhaps upstart rookie Sean Baker, with two interceptions and a fumble recovery, did enough on Wednesday?

Joe’s down on the Grimm release and hopes the Bucs have another quality body in mind.

    DAm that sucks

  2. Buc Fan #237 Says:

What I don’t get is why is Grimm a fan favorite when you had a guy in Barrett Ruud who actually could produce 100+ tackles a season, picked by Monet Kiffin, choosen to start by Kiffin, and Ruud wasn’t a fan favorite?

How can Grimm be a greater impact than Ruud to the Bucs defense?

To me, the fans need to re-calibrate who their favorites should be, and that’s actual NFL caliber starters.

  3. Buddhaboy Says:

fan favorites , serious dude, we want winners. Not guys like ruud that get trucked over and get cut by seattle

  4. Colorado Buc Says:

I think he should have been at least kept around as a special teamer. He was an understudy of Beamer Ball afterall.

  5. Travis Says:

Grimm did a servicable job for us, but Ahmad Black has been all over the field at saftey, as well as a special teams stud. But what probably sealed his fate was when he was outplayed by Baker in the last preseason game when they were on the field at the same time. Baker flat out out played Grimm, and looks much faster flying around the field.

I like this time of year because we get to see the roster formed, but I also dislike it because of all the negative reactions from fans. It’s the same damn thing every year. Everyone is an armchair GM and questions every move that’s made. It tends to ruin the excitement of seeing who our team is going to be this year.

  7. LovesBrain Says:

Grimm was one of my favorites!!! but we have so much depth in safety so it was gonna come

  8. Stanglassman Says:

We like Grimm because he is a smart football player who has heart and makes plays. What a shame this new coach doesn’t recognize his talent. Good luck with your new team Cody.

  9. albuc44 Says:

injury prone and he didnt stand out in preseason … not surprised ..actually I called this one during week 3 preason game at Canadabucs house … Good luck Grim-reaper

  10. Meh Says:

Grimm hasn’t been the same since his last injury unfortunately. I’m not surprised by this move.

  11. Have A Nice Day Says:

There can only be 53 players on the roster. With a new coaching staff and a terrible preseason, this was bound to happen. Some team will hire him.

  12. BigMacAttack Says:

Grimm was bad the other night. I have watched him closely during the pre-season and he has been just bad. No loss here, it was time. Onward and Upward. Hope Dom can pick up a few more good backups this weekend.

  13. BigMacAttack Says:

Dotson has played well at LT but RT doesn’t seem to be as easy for him. I wonder how BIG MAN PENN would do at RG.

  14. Santos Says:

Grimm nor his agent have heard of his release per twitter…might wanna put this one on hold!

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I love how people assume one player has heart, yet another doesn’t. I’m not saying Grimm doesn’t have heart, but what is the basis for your analysis? Because he was a late round pick? Do you know him? I don’t get it. Bottom line is you have to be able to play to be on this team. Injuries have apparently prevented him from doing that, as this is not the same Cody Grimm as 2 years ago. He’s done absolutely nothing but look terrible all preseason. He’s been embarrassingly late in pass coverage, and has been no help in run support. I can’t remember one good play he’s made all preseason. I wish him luck, but unfortunately I think the injuries have really damaged a very promising career.

  16. albuc44 Says:

    well Santos he heard now..lol

  17. skp Says:

picked up by the redskins in 3…..2…..

  18. albuc44 Says:

lol @ skp…. okam will also be a redskin soon

  19. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

Way to go 620. Dont tell me Sileo is back in his reporting duties.

  20. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Even if he hasn’t officially been released yet, I hope he is sometime today. He’s looked bad this preseason and I believe he’s a liability.

  21. Buc_The_World Says:

I like Grimm, when he was healthly played very well, but let’s face it after his first injury he just wasn’t the same after that. To add to it, back then his competition was Sabby the Goat and sean jones was playing next to him so he looked ten times better compared to them. Now unfortunately he cannot compete physically and mentally he has lost his mojo. I hope he finds another NFL home but it was time for him leave Buc-town.

  22. Patrick Says:

Pretty stupid move if this is true! He’s our only proven safety!! Other than Barron, who else is capable of being a solid starting safety?

    CUT Myron Lewis

  23. Lion Says:

Fan favorite or not, he got outplayed. I don’t want a player on my team just because he is like more than the other guy, that is ridiculous people. He had plenty of opportunities in camp/preseason to make a statement. Some of you act as if he wasn’t given a chance.

  24. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Pretty stupid move if this is true! He’s our only proven safety!!”

    ————

You are mistaking proven with experienced. Plus, he started like 10 games, so he’s not even that experienced. It’s not like he’s been around forever. It’s not like anyone considers him an All-Pro. In fact, outside of Bucs fans, nobody knows who he is (except they may recognize his last name). Too bad people don’t have the same feelings for Gerald McCoy (someone the team has far more invested in). I struggle to figure out why.

so is grimm gone or not?

Earlier today his agent said he was not cut. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t cut since.
