Lynch Down On Bucs’ D-Line Depth, Quality

August 17th, 2012

“Just being perfectly honest, there’s not a whole lot next to him,” John Lynch says of Gerald McCoy.

Count Joe among those who get hives thinking about the Bucs’ defensive line depth and overall talent level.

It seems right now that Wallace Gilberry and George Johnson are the backups at defensive end. Then on the interior line, a significantly banged up Amobi Okoye and Gary Gibson are sitting behind Roy Miller on the depth chart. Joe’s feeling more hope than confidence.

Speaking of Miller, it seems John Lynch is depressed by the Bucs’ crop of nose tackles. Lynch had hefty praise for Gerald McCoy this morning during an interview WDAE-AM 620, but the Bucs icon is concerned McCoy will not benefit much from the guy next to him.

“What would concern me is, Does he get worn out?” Lynch said of McCoy. “Because you’re going to ask a lot of him because he’s the best you have. Just being perfectly honest, there’s not a whole lot next to him. So I think he’s going to be the guy getting doubled all the time.”

Lynch went on to say he’d like to see whether a defensive end emerges to rush inside to take pressure of McCoy on passing downs.

Hopefully, Lynch’s study of the Miami game film was off the mark and the Bucs’ D-line is a shining star, as longtime NFL personnel guru Bill Polian recently claimed. This is definitely another thing to zero in on tonight.

Below is the full Lynch interview: He drops a great story about how Bill Belicheat tried to turn him into a linebacker.

I couldn’t agree more…our depth is a major concern…and it will be all
‘GMC’s” fault…because he will be double teamed all year..

True, we are thin at DT position, but Amobi Okoye is another guy that can bring it in pass rush. D-Line as a whole may not be a problem however. I see big things happening from Bennett and Clayborn, and Gilberry proving to be more than a capable backup.

  3. Stanglassman Says:

This is why I am still scratching my head about trading BP for nothing. I couldn’t wait to see what that guy could do in better shape/health. If Price ever is able to regain his health he will dominate in a mean, intimidating Adrian Clayborn kinda way. I wish that dude well.

I’m glad to know ronde barber is the only player who was part of our magical 2002 season who is still active…

the only thing worst than the bucs d-line is Lynch’s tv commentary, seriously, does this guy know then more than 10 guys on our roster, no wonder Lynch is on the number 8 team. If you don’t want to do something then don’t do it.

  6. Miguel Grande Says:

Why would they double team Geraldini? He takes himself out of every play. That would be like doubling Gaines Adams.

Brian Price would have been great on that DL, that guy had some dog in him.
Too bad he wasn’t a sprinter, maybe Jeff Demps can play some DT.

We sure have a butch coach, though.

  7. Bane Says:

God I hope Gerald McCoy blows his ACL or tears a pectoral muscle or something bad….just a significant injury to just destroy this defense which in turn will sink the whole team

  8. Rusty2589 Says:

As for gettin nothing for B.P., las article I read he was already banged up, not sure on injury

  9. jfgobucs Says:

    Demps is in New England…

Yes no pressure on the quaterback what so ever this collection of lames is going to get gashed again this year who is going to get to the quaterback amungst this feeble collection the polio kid, geraldine farraro, or amobile traffic cop waving by speeding running backs every play this is going to be a lond season until they get some real help upfront this team is in for a long ride playing from behind a double digit deficit is not what this team needs to be doing
