Kellen Winslow Gave Greg Schiano Ammunition

May 21st, 2012

Well. It’s one thing under the New Schiano Order not to work out with the team in the offseason, but perhaps it’s quite another to flaunt your absence in public.

Last week the Bucs held an OTA, and Kellen Winslow, along with Brian Price and Dezmon Briscoe were not to be found.

Price was hospitalized and unavailable. Briscoe, well, Joe will get into that maybe tomorrow. Winslow was being Winslow, what he usually did each offseason: working out in California.

But a week prior to the Bucs’ first OTA, Winslow found the time to fly to Las Vegas to DJ at the Hard Rock, per NFL.com’s Adam Rank.

“It was great,” Winslow said. “It was everything I thought it would be. I messed up on one song, but I don’t think anybody noticed.”

Winslow doesn’t have any future gigs lined up, but he would like to DJ after his playing days are done and eventually move on to producer.

Winslow started with hip-hop when he first started spinning seven years ago, going with performers such as 50 Cent, Nas, DMX, Ludacris and Busta Rhymes. Now he specializes in trance, techno and house music. But Winslow admits that he likes all kind of music. He admits 90 percent of the stuff he listens to is house, techno and trance, but as for the other 10 percent he enjoys Foo Fighters, Blink 182, Daughtry and Creed.

Color Joe not surprised. Since this was on NFL.com, Joe is sure new Bucs coach Greg Schiano got wind of this. And combine the fact Winslow couldn’t find the time to come to Tampa to work out with this teammates but found the time to go to Las Vegas to spin tunes, Schiano, like he did with Tanard Jackson, figured if you don’t want to be with the team, then you don’t need to be on the team.

  1. Patrick Says:

    Wow seriously, who cares?

The OTA’s weren’t happening yet! Is the guy not allowed to have any fun?

But I’ll say this: K2 has crappy taste in music. a.k.a. rap sucks.

  2. Joe Says:

    Patrick:

    Wow seriously, who cares?

    For one, Greg Schiano, obviously.

  3. Brandon Says:

    Patrick,
If the Bucs were to get rid of every player on the roster that listened to rap, we’d have a roster of maybe 10 guys, 6 of which aren’t punters or kickers.

Obviously the Bucs care that K2 is more concerned with being present at a DJ function than with his real job. It doesn’t matter when the timing was, it shows what is important to him.

I’d had it with Winslow for a while now. I’m still steamed he dropped that easy 4th down pass against Carolina in 09, not to mention all of the complaining and pouting he’s done that has probably done tons to mess with Freeman’s ability to objectively go through progressions.

I stated when we traded for him that I didn’t like the trade to give away a 2nd and 5th for a guy with 40 year old knees and MIGHT play another 5 years.

I stated at the end of the season that losing Winslow would be addition by subtraction. No Winslow means we may actually be effective running the ball.

  4. SensibleBuc Says:

That’s weak sauce but it is what it is. K2 is gone and we’ll have Dallas Clark and a bunch of unproven guys at the tight end position. (Clearly, the position will be devalued in Sully Ball) As long as Briscoe is cut before the season starts then I’ll chalk all these transactions up to the usual “Changing the Culture” moves that come with a regime change.

  5. Brandon Says:

I also recall late last season watching Winslow running a 10 yard out to the sideline in which he turned at about a 110 degree angle, not the 90 degree or less angle that outs ARE required to be run. The ball was there where Winslow was SUPPOSED to be… he came back to the huddle with a look that seemed to be blaming Freeman for the bad throw. Winslow doesn’t run good routes and we don’t need his attitude. Like I said at the time and has been proven now, it was a bad trade. It would be a minor miracle if we can recover anything even in the neighborhood of a 6th round pick for him and his bloated salary and ego.

  6. Macabee Says:

This could be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back, but I think this started a long time ago. They’ve now just decided to end it, trade or no trade.

There’s no turning back on this one. The guy has been asked to not attend OTAs this week even though he’s in town.

Double check me on this one Joe, but I just heard the Dallas Clark deal confirmed on JP 1010!

  7. Shayne Says:

PLEASE STOP WITH ALL THE WINSLOW STORIES! its driving me insane… too many

  8. Stevek Says:

    I love this move.

All in and all about winning, or your gone.

Obviously, if K2 can put record spinning before meeting a new coach and teammates, then don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

This is the NFL, you’re a professional. He is robbing the team of much needed bonding/familiarizing.

If the Bucs were paying me to be mediocre, then my ass would be in Vegas too.

    What a damn tool/fool.

  9. Stevek Says:

Let K2 go play with Hayneswurf, on the all-turd team.

  10. Joe Says:

    Shayne:

PLEASE STOP WITH ALL THE WINSLOW STORIES! its driving me insane… too many

What, Joe is supposed to write about something topical like who the fourth-string weakside linebacker should be?

    Please.

  11. Joe Says:

Double check me on this one Joe, but I just heard the Dallas Clark deal confirmed on JP 1010!

How can JP confirm this when he’s not even on the air for another hour?

  12. OAR Says:

So long, DJ – there is no “I” in team, but there is a “me” – Souljah!!

  13. Shayne Says:

who is going to be the fourth string linebacker joe?!?!?!?!

  14. Shayne Says:

    weakside linebacker*

  15. Joe Says:

    LOL Thanks Macabee.

When someone mentions “JP,” Joe really believes they are referring to “JP.”

No confirmation on Clark but all signs point to him. Of course, the Patriots are involved as well in the bidding.

  16. Eric Says:

    A week before the OTA’s?

    Makes no sense.

Plus they tried to trade him at draft time, so OTA’s can’t be the reason.

Got to be way more to it than that. Don’t ditch your leading receiver for going to vegas. Thats plain silly.

  17. Brandon Says:

Joe, I seriously doubt there is “bidding” on Clark. Considering he would be the 3rd TE at best in New England, the Pats won’t break the bank,a nd considering he has a shot at being the #1, Clark might be looking to rehabilitate his stock. The Bucs are likely the #1 option from both a monetary and playing time standpoint.

  18. BucsFanInChina Says:

Good, anyone with the musical tastes of Creed and house music should be unemployed.

  19. BKNYfootballhead Says:

Just how does Schiano explain cutting a guy who likes Daughtry & Creed?

    I know I’m in a tailspin.

  20. jvato24 Says:

Maybe they just actually need a receiver that can block and will rely on 3 WR sets with a FB And RB.

This may be more scheme driven than attitude driven … But the baggage makes it easier to decide on what to do.

But on the bright side Freeman should cut down his pickoffs by 12 or 13 without Winslow to force the ball to.

  21. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

I think some of you are missing Joe’s point.

Winslow chose to “skip” OTAs in favor of fun and games in Vegas. I’m sure Schiano would have been fine of it was something important…but Winslow called him out on this one and got burned.

I liked Winslow, but he screwed the pooch in this instance.

  22. Kirk Says:

One is free to choose, but one is not free from the consequences of those choices.

    Buh bye.

  23. Patrick Says:

Everytime I hear the song “home”, I change the station. Actually, that goes for any Daughtry song.

    Creed sucks too.

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

Great Move Dom and Schiano. K2 served his purpose here and what a great time to cut him loose when you’re trying to build a new total team atmosphere. As we said last week, if he ain’t here, he can’t improve his timing with Freeman. I just hope someone like the 49’rs will take a chance on him and throw a pick our way, even a 7’th would be awesome. Time to move on, and Briscoe is obviously next to go. The team doesn’t need these types of players that care more about themselves than the team.

Sure everybody needs life, so what. What kind of fool wouldn’t sacrifice his 20’s and early 30’s to make millions, and be set up for the rest of his life? And to think, even the ones that do go all in, almost all squander the money and end up broke.

  25. SensibleBuc Says:

    @ Pete

He wasn’t skipping anything brother. This was the week before OTAs.

  26. Deminion Says:

    Go bucs!!

  27. Eric Says:

Its all great, coughed up a second rounder for a guy then release him.

    Hail to the rock star.

  28. lightningbuc Says:

I thought he was staying in California because he had a lucrative “HOW NOT TO RIDE A MOTORCYCLE” school out there. Good riddance SOLDIER. Love Schiano’s no nonsense style.

  29. Kirk Says:

    Eric=Debbie Downer

  30. OAR Says:

    sensible and Pete
You guys both missed the point. Kellen could fly to Vegas to DJ but couldn’t fly to Florida for his team’s OTAs. You know our team, the Bucs, the one that has paying him millions! A team with a new coach, new scheme, and new attitude to boot!

  31. Nick Says:

At least we got 3 years out of that trade for the 2nd rounder. Better than any 2nd rounder Gruden got

  32. JKTampa Says:

Bucs are getting all the flies out of the milk. Love it! Hate to see a talented player leave, but we need players committed to the team. Party’s over guys! time to earn your paycheck.

  33. FlBoy84 Says:

While Clark (if signed) is on the downside of his career, he could be a temporary replacement that might be a great veteran mentor to all the young TE’s the team has on the roster right now. Guys like Stocker, Coffman, Pinialto & Dunsmore could really benefit from even spending a training camp with a guy like Clark, let alone a season. See him being a more willing (and preferred) mentor than Winslow would ever be.

  34. bucfanjeff Says:

A coach once told me, “You play how you practice. You want to BE great? Practice great.”

Clearly Winslow, for all his talents, isn’t able to practice with much demand on his knees. Bucs want committed players. They are paying millions of dollars to these players to show up, practice hard, and buy in. It’s not much to ask for.

Don’t buy in and you’re cashed out.

  35. @eric Says:

See ya K2, wont miss seeing this idiot copy Blunt by “trying” to leap guys, he couldnt handle how Blunt got praises for a big man to jump over defenders and tried and tried again to copy him only to fail over and over……he should be the starting TE on the All-“Me”Shawn team…..give me the damn ball………just like TO K2 was a cancer for our QB….now Freeman can breath easier without whispers in his ear the entire game…..

  36. Northend Says:

Dude said he liked the Foo Fighters. His stock actually has gone up with me.buisness is buisness.no need to back the bus over him.played hard, had some big catches thru his time here.now time to go in a dif direction. Best of luck k2.

  37. SensibleBuc Says:

    @ OAR

    That’s still weak bro.

K2 has a track record of doing this and has never missed a game as a Buc. He’s always been ready for the season. At some point Schiano signed off on his missing OTAs and this incident had nothing to do with OTAs anyway.

It feels like they were just looking for any ole reason to cut him because he didn’t fit the program. If that’s the case then they should’ve let him go before the Draft when they let T Jax go.

  38. Eric Says:

Either Winslow was the cancer that ruined Free and, hence, the trade for him was a huge mistake. Or, he is good and worthy of that trade, and the current release is a mistake.

Either way it isn’t a path to lasting contendership (which also hasn’t happened unless you count a ten game losing streak).

Call me a downer, or blame Gruden, but those are the indisputable facts.

Not a good day for the “rock star”.

  39. BucFan20 Says:

GMC can’t stay ont the field the las 2 seasons. Now they may take a chance on someone who missed 16 games in the last 2 seasons?? Guess they want to make this a hope and pray team too.

  40. BucFan20 Says:

    ^ t

  41. Caleb Says:

Winslow also didn’t do himself any favors by saying he’d prefer Chudzinski (if that is how it’s spelled?) over Schiano, once coach Schiano was hired.

  42. Stevek Says:

    Peace out K2. Go DJ!

  43. Have A Nice Day Says:

Well, he hasn’t been released yet so a trade is still possible.

  44. Fear The Glow Says:

So did they release him or are they trying to trade him? I’ve read both so far. They aren’t going to get anything in a trade after this.

  45. Have A Nice Day Says:

@Fear The Glow I can’t find anything that he has been released but I have found that they are trying to trade him and if they can’t, then he’ll be released. Either way he won’t play for the Bucs this upcoming season.

  46. Matt Says:

just a thought… mike jenkins wants out of dallas per pro football talk and we are trying to shop winslow. i think this trade could work out for both parties

  47. Eric Says:

Similar to when they deactivated Keyshawn, then traded him for Galloway?

    That actualy worked out.

  48. LBBoogie Says:

Good point Eric, but its not like we just gave up that 2nd for him last year…he’s served his purpose…time to move on…

  49. BuccFanInHawkeyeCountry Says:

Mike jenkins for Kellen? I dunno all the salaries n whatnot would work out..

  50. Tristan Berry Says:

If they say they’ll release him if they can’t find a trading partner, then why would anyone make a trade for him if they can sign just flat-out sign him after he’s released? Something here doesn’t make sense.

  51. TrueBlue Says:

Let’s face it. It’s all about priorities. Schiano wants guys who LOVE playing football. Winslow showed he loves playing DJ. Schiano is here to build a winner. He’s looking for certain types of players to make that happen. Winslow just doen’t fit the template.

  52. Joe Says:

    Tristan:

If they say they’ll release him if they can’t find a trading partner, then why would anyone make a trade for him if they can sign just flat-out sign him after he’s released?

That’s why K2 torpedoed any chance the Bucs have of trading him when he broke the news this morning.

  53. Joe Says:

    Matt:

No! Mike Jenkins is not a Schiano guy.

  54. BigMacAttack Says:

I like the Clark signing because of his experience playing with the best QB in the business. Clark and Jackson will teach Josh and the other TE’s/WR’s how to play the game the right way, and how to win. The Bucs have made mistakes with players since Dom took over, but I feel he is taking major strides to rectify these mistakes. For me today is just another top 40 hit for the Rock Star GM. Schiano is going about this the right way, and I would bet any amount of money that both He & Dom poured over last season’s game tape on K2. At that point, the choice was clear that K2 is done. Cut your losses and find a stop gap like Clark. Next year the Bucs may be able to land a top TE in the draft of via FA.

  55. Rickster Says:

He should spend this next time he’s in vegas
Nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh bodys fault but minneeeeee
    Led zepplin!
    XD

  56. Tristan Berry Says:

    @ Joe:

Well, that tells me all I need to know about K2. I kinda liked what I knew of the guy. I guess I just didn’t know enough.

  57. Patrick Says:

    @rickstar

He should spin THIS next time he’s in Vegas.

    Catch Me Now I’m Falling

    The Kinks

    🙂

  58. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    SensibleBuc
He did the Vegas thing instead of attending LAST WEEK’s OTAs/Minicamp. Not this week.
