“He’s Not Going To Take No Crap”

March 17th, 2012

Joe’s pretty sure he knows what Carl Nicks was talking about when he said Coach Schiano has got that “Italian swag/Jersey shore” going on.

It’s just a presence that exudes ‘I’m the coach. I won’t BS you. And don’t try to BS me or you’ll get slapped upside da head immediately.’

Joe speaks from experience, as Joe (this Joe) grew up in Schiano’s hometown county, where that kind of attitude is rampant in all walks of life. Bill Parcells wasn’t Italian, but he was from the same neighborhood and had that same stereotypical swag. How Schiano will translate to the NFL is a mystery, but the well-known, NFL-readiness of his many ex-college players in the league likely is a testament to his no-nonsense, demanding approach.

Nicks was asked for his initial impression of Schiano by Tom Krasniqi of WHBO-AM 1040 this week, and below was his response:

“Coach G, man. He’s got that Italian swag, you know that Jersey, you know that Jersey shore going on. Big family guy, which I love and respect. Hard-working guy. He’s not going to take no crap,” Nicks said. “We’ve got a lot in common. He’s passionate about the game. I can tell he wants the players to do good not just in football, but after football as far as your charities. He just wants you to be better people. You gotta surround yourselves with guys like that.

New cornerback Eric Wright’s early take on Schiano was, “he’s real stern and very focused on what he wants to get accomplished.”

There’s no question this new regime will be a culture shock for the Bucs that return in 2012. Joe suspects there will be a few “situations” as the team adjusts Schiano’s interpretation of the Buccaneer Way.

    Raheem Morris????? Jim Haslet!!

  4. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

Im renewing my season tickets. Even if we dont make the playoffs this is going to be a fun season to see.

  5. Mr. Patrick Says:

Too bad for Talib. One strike and you’re out.

  6. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

This just might be the thing that Talib needs. I don’t thinkTalib, TJAX has EVER had a father figure (tough love) in his life, versus the party guy, chest pumping previous Raheem (regime).

  7. Bobby Says:

There should be no moe excuses for empty stadiums. The franchise is making every effort to give the fans a good product and we need to support that. I believe Schiano is going to be the exception to the rule of college coaches failing in the NFL. Most did not come into a situation where the talent level is as good as it is in Tampa. We will have one of if not the best O-line in the NFL, a franchise QB, one of the premier receivers, a good RB (with coaching even better) and a top 5 pick in the draft. The Front D-line should be quite good if they can stay healthy. A little repair in the LB’s and DB’s and we should be good to go. Future looks bright.

  8. Bill Says:

I watched the intro presser and what struck me about Schiano is that he LOOKED like a football coach. I grew up watching Woody and Bo and those guys looked like football coaches. Schiano has that same look.

  9. Have A Nice Day Says:

@Bobby The fans will come when the wins come, not free agents. Free agents are cool and all, but wins are what sell tickets in Tampa. It is that way with the Bucs and the Rays.

  10. jb Says:

@ South Tampa “I’m renewing my season tickets. Even if we don’t make the playoffs this is going to be a fun season to see.”

Boy, I hope there’s a lot more of ya out there. A lot of us already renewed but we need ALL THOSE THAT WERE ON THE FENCE TO MAN UP!

Get this team back on TV so they’re once again relevant to this community!

  11. CharlieB Says:

    @Bobby

If you want to pay for my tickets I’ll go. My decision to not buy tickets has nothing to do with the on-field product.

  12. bob Says:

hope he can coach up the D

  13. jb Says:

    @CharlieB @Bobby

If you want to pay for my tickets I’ll go. My decision to not buy tickets has nothing to do with the on-field product.

Unless it’s due to a lack of funds, you have NO excuse NOT to!

  14. Brown Bag Says:

Call it whatever you want about Rah, he was held back, they didn’t get him the right players. Point is this, these big dollar free agents and the current players call Schiano “Coach”. It’s about time we put someone who is feared and respected in the driver’s seat.

It bugged me every time a player called him Rah.

  15. Garv Says:

What fan doesn’t love hearing this? The crap that went on last season is OVER!
Already renewed and can’t wait for the 2012 season to get started.

  16. Macabee Says:

My take is that Schiano is a real players coach. One that will be straight with his players and the players will know that when he speaks, he’s not going to have to repeat himself. He will be principled and stern without being bombastic. I don’t expect to see anything like the Singletary/Vernon Davis outburst or the Gruden/Keyshawn stare down. This man will be loved by his players as its been throughout his coaching career!

  17. 941Buc Says:

Just got my season tix yesterday for first time. Better get on the ship now!

  18. BigMacAttack Says:

I renewed mine a while back, during the dark days, but had a feeling change was coming. I felt the need to rag on the Glazers as much possible during that time in hopes they would spend some money. They’ve done well so far but there are still a couple players left in free agency that could help the team and are worth signing. It would be nice if they could start selling out again, but I honestly think it will take one more year to get there. But like many of you guys, I’m not going to let blackouts spoil my Sundays.

FYI, all the major sports bars in Sarasota now have antennas with amplifiers to get the games from Ft Myers(clearly) through the air waves, which is legal, so it makes for a shorter drive if anyone wants to save little $6 gas this fall.

  19. BROCKTACULAR Says:

    Let the festivities begin!!!!!

  20. Rickster Says:

Wonder if k2 will have to practice now?

  21. Garv Says:

I wonder if K2 is even on the team this summer.
He’ll need to block more than catch now and I cannot see him
avoiding OTA’s and practice like he has.

    We’ll see.

  22. Thomas 2.2. Says:

What a relief to have a head football coach again.

Three years of unprofessionalism made this community disgusted over our once beloved bucs.

You could never have selected a worse coach for a young football team – what were they thinking?

Rah was more likely to go to the club with them than hold them accountable for anything. I just hope the horrible 3 years of disgusting coaching doesnt linger for a while with these players – some: like K2, Talib, THC Jax, Hayes, Black etc need to be outright released – that will send the right message!

  23. Vince Says:

Good, cause the team that took the field last year needs a good slap upside the head.

  24. SilenceTheCritics Says:

Still not understanding why people are wanting our best TE, best receiver period, to be released… He’s had no off field issues and its not his fault the last regime didnt make him do anything. We have no replacement for him…so its a little ignorant to just toss him out like trash.

  25. Vince Says:

Maybe it’s his “me” first attitude and yelling @ Freeman to throw him the ball, even in double coverage. How did that work out for us?? Mind you, I’m not calling for K2 to be cut, I’m just giving my opinion.

  26. SilenceTheCritics Says:

What player doesnt want the ball?… Nobody was making plays last year so you cant blame him for getting heated and wanting the ball more considering he was the only weapon we had that could do anything…. I dont see that as being a “Me” first attitude.. To me thats just wanting to win when everybody else gave up.

  27. BigMacAttack Says:

I think Geno Hayes interviewed with the Broncos yesterday, so I’d guess he’s on his way out the door. Won’t be missed. I hope Dakota Watson can step up and have a good year. I think a lot will depend on who is at 1 Buc now working out, getting a jump on the season. I know some players do it on their own elsewhere, but being with the team early should help a player’s chances. It should be easy to spot the smart players that knew it was house cleaning time and have put in the off-season work verses the idiots that sit around and party on the beach.

  28. Jimmy Says:

    Isn’t Rah-Rah from New Jersey?

  29. Higher728 Says:

Isn’t Morris from new jersey also?

  30. Dave D. Says:

No disrespect. Raheem was innercity ghetto swag. Schiano is tough-guy Italian catholic, strict discipline, North Jersey Sopranos-style swag. That’s two different worlds. Just like redneck Pasco and Trinity gated community would be.

  31. Rrsrq Says:

All the poster/Buc fans, don’t post without knowledge, those speaking about geno Hayes, he is not on this team anymore, he is a free agent unless we resign him (doubtful). K2, for someone that caused such a problem of not practicing, one of the most productive players, what do you think he was doing when wasn’t practicing, he is still doing walk throughs, he just not doing full contact and if that preserves him for Sundays, then what’s the problem, wish more players on the team had his competitiveness.

  32. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree that K2 still has value, but he had a bad season in 2011′ after a really stout 2010′. Its hard to guess what they will do here with K2 and a couple other receivers. A lot will depend on camps and OTA’s, who shines, who doesn’t, but anyone (Rah) that thought K2 training in San Diego while Freeman is working in Tampa, wouldn’t hurt their chemistry is/was a fool. I hope that Freeman and V Jackson are throwing the ball on the beach today, tomorrow and the next day. Repetition is the key and this offense needs to take advantage of every opportunity they have off the field.

And that Jersey Swag thing is a bunch of crap. Leadership isn’t about where your from. Its who you are and what you do. How will you react in adverse situations, when you’re up against it? Raheem showed little if any character last season, and why he wasn’t a leader, a good talker, but no leader. There are bad places all over this country, all over the world, and that is why I like Sullivan’s military background. The guy, I’m sure knows the meaning of SELF discipline to a “T”.

And Josh, lose the Glock. There are more thumb friendly weapons on the market, like the Walther PPQ.

  33. Rickster Says:

No doubt k2 can play, but he kinda reminds me of vernon davis. I know skill wise there worlds apart but attitude wise very similar. That is until mike singletary gave him the butt chewing of his life and kicked him out the game that he got his stuff together.
I hope coach G can do the same for him along with talib…

  34. K1ngAdroc Says:

I have to say, I can’t wait to hear a player call Schiano “Coach Shiano”

A little thing but I think it’s very important. Regardless of the level of play, it’s a matter of respect. A lot of Buc’s / Bucs Fans got disrespected last year.

((raises green beer)) Here’s to that is over and we are back to flyin to the ball and puttin hat’s on the ball carrier.

  35. Papawill13 Says:

One thing I am tired of hearing is Morris was not supported with talent. That “Might” be true. But an even Below Average coach would never allow a team to just QUIT, like this team did last year. There is NO WAY that Schiano would have allowed last year to even happen, with less talent. Now who knows how he does in the NFL. But one thing for sure, he wont quit and he wont allow ANY Buc player on the field who has quit.

  36. BecklesHeartsRuud Says:

Its funny cuz guys make comments like our new coach “LOOKS like an NFL coach” I guess our previous “young black guy” didn’t “LOOK” like an NFL coach. Not trying to make excuses for 4-12. Just wondering why people think the new coach “LOOKS” like he will do better.

  37. Jeff Says:

Honestly i can say I saw K2 practicing at One Buc Place when no one else was 2 years ago. Running out on the field and working with coaches. catching balls and running routes. no one else at the Palace but him and a few coaches. So I can’t see where he just doesn’t practice. maybe not hitting during the week, but working out yes.

I just hope this coaching staff can get more out of all the players. I think that they can. Go Bucs.
