Goodbye, Kregg Lumpkin

March 23rd, 2012

The Bucs running back seemingly everyone wanted to hate, Kregg Lumpkin (or as Joe referred to him as, “The Great Lumpkin”), is no more.

That means Bucs fans can no longer loathe him as he is someone else’s problem. Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times reports The Great Lumpkin is now a member of the Seattle Seahawks.

The Seahawks tried to acquire Lumpkin two years ago when he was waived by the Green Bay Packers, putting in a waiver claim on him. Instead, Lumpkin was awarded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on waivers. He played for the Bucs the previous two seasons, appearing in 29 games.

Lumpkin, 27, is 228 pounds, meaning he fits in the mold of the bigger back the Seahawks had been seeking to serve as a complement to starter Marshawn Lynch. The Seahawks were interested in Michael Bush, who wound up going to the Bears this week.

The reason why Joe, and many Bucs fans, were so skeptical of Lumpkin was that Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik hard-sold Lumpkin to the masses last summer as the perfect replacement for Cadillac Williams, who Dominik did not re-sign.

Joe smelled a fishy sell from the word go because the Packers, hardly a team loaded with running backs, let Lumpkin walk. Packers general manager Ted Thompson simply doesn’t let players of any value walk the streets, especially an inexpensive running back.

If Lumpkin was as talented as Dominik tried to imply to Bucs fans, Joe reasoned, then Thompson would have kept him on the Packers roster.

Meanwhile, Caddy, the previous season, proved to be a great counter-punch to LeGarrette Blount. Lumpkin, clearly, was not.

Joe hopes Lumpkin has success in Seattle and in a twisted way is happy he’s not here to stoke the ire of Bucs fans.

Wish him the best, but he simply did not fit in Tampa. Now please sign forsett, addai, or LT so we have a back that can catch a football. And honestly should bring caddy back for league minimum and let him compete in camp

  2. ClayBURN94 Says:

So I guess Trent Richardson it is…

I would love to have Caddy back. Bring some wisdom and heart to the lockerroom.

Hot damn Sam! Great. Keep purging the lessers and signing the greaters.

Good column @Joe. Start to finish, well said.

Just have to wonder, why aren’t Dom and front office filling in more gaps, considering how incredibly inexpensive these other FA’s are signing for elsehwere, and the Bucs remaining needs, that are better suited met in Free Agency.

  6. RCH Says:

Good move. It sure seems like we are going to go with Richardson after letting him go and getting Carl Nicks.

  7. Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Madu is a much better back then Lumpkin for a back up.
It looks like Tampa will grab a running back in the draft now. Besides Trent Richardson, there are some good ones from Miami and Virginia.

  8. jLM Says:

We have 2 backs now, does Madu count for anything???

  9. jvato24 Says:

wahoo !! Bring back Caddy on 2 yr deal … He was good with Blount as the #1. He had over 6 yds per carry in the 2nd half of the season !!

Then draft a back in Rd 1 or 2. Even Trent Richardson is no guarantee @ 5.

  10. Drew Says:

Charlie Brown and the Great Lumpkin.

  11. Cmurda Says:

Smokescreen – If MO is there he will be a Buccaneer

Not so. They would have waited until after the draft if that were the case.

I like this idea a lot. It just doesn’t seem right that Caddy not be a Buc until he retires. We could get him very cheap.

I’m not saying he should be the #2…unless he earns it. I suspect Lumpkin being cut means another signing is about to happen. It clears a roster spot.

  13. DAN Says:

    and more importantly cap space.

oh and new orleans singed that chamberlain dood.

  14. ATLBuc Says:

Adios, Kregg! You will not be missed!

  15. Capt.Tim Says:

Caddy back is a good idea

And no. This doesn’t mean Richarson at all

    We have a running back

We do not have any CBs.
If you watched last season. If you watched the ten game losing streak.
If you watched every scrub QB we played torch our secondary

    Then you know that’s true.

If you believe that Biggers, Talib, Mack, or Lewis is an NFL CB- especially after watching them last season
Then you should pick up a new hobby. football isn’t your game.
It’s gotta be 2 great CBS in the draft. We got nothing.
Greg Schiano won’t like standing on the sidelines- watching the Trackmeet our secondary sponsored every game last year.
Thankfully- I’m sure he plans to correct it.
I think he watched film from last season recently- he had a lot more grey hair!!

What am I gonna do with my Lumpkin jersey?

Does anyone think another team will give us a kings ransom for our 5th overall pick? We sure could use extra picks in the first 3 rounds.

I don’t know if anyone has enough picks based on the chart.

  19. Patrick Says:

The thing that pissed me off about Lumpkin was that he did NOTHING to even earn a roster spot. He was a perfect example of cheapness by the team at the time. A absolute nobody off the scrap heap.

But hey they finally spent some damn money! So at least we know they care!

And yes, Caddy would be a good idea as a complement back.

  20. Lombardi Ambition (L.A.) Says:

Trades must be within 200 points on the
point value. A 2013 pick is worth 32 spots
less than the equivalent round of the 2012
draft. (Example: The Bengals 2013 1st
round pick is worth the same as their 2012
    2nd round pick)

    According to mockingthedraft.com/

Sorry it’s late I forgot how to add. J/K
Possible, but how far down can Dom go and still get quality over quantity?

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

It’s a good draft for what we need.
Trading down may be an option.
Especially if somebody gets loopy for that Texas QB, Tannehill.

  22. DallasBuc Says:

Thank god. This guy was one of the most egregious offenses made by the Mark Dominick regime. He was an embarrassment.
