Bucs Fans Can Be Irrational

February 16th, 2012

Sometimes the irrational beliefs of some Bucs fans make Joe shake his damned head. Such was the case this morning when a Bucs fan in dire need of a hug from a cheerleader called “The Blitz,” co-hosted by Adam Schein and Rich Gannon, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, and was nearly in tears over what he perceives Team Glazer and Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik are doing to the team.

“They are trying to sink their ship on their own. As far as ownership, it seems they want to pack their bags and set themselves up as the team that moves to Los Angeles. I need answers!

“I just don’t see any direction or answers to what they are trying to do. Enlighten me a little bit. Make me want to be a Bucs fan. Last year I thought we were headed back in the right direction. This year, right back in the same boat again. Last place is good enough. It seems that is where we are headed.”

Joe has an answer for this man: Before one makes outrageous statements about the Bucs moving, e-mail the Tampa Sports Authority and ask for a copy of the Bucs’ lease. It’s public record.

The Bucs have an absolute sweetheart of a deal. If Team Glazer were to move the Bucs, a) Team Glazer wouldn’t have spent millions of dollars on One Buc Palace; b) sought to have stadium renovations (which are already written into the lease that was approved by Hillsborough County voters years ago) in order for the city to host another Super Bowl (only held at stadiums which house an NFL team).

The Bucs are actually hiring coaches who instill discipline. The future is looking brighter. Though Schein and Gannon had little to say in response to the distraught Bucs fan caller, since they were heading into a commercial break, Schein did say he is getting good vibes for the Bucs in 2012. “Seriously.”

As for those who are of the belief Team Glazer is going to move the Bucs, Joe suggests an intervention is in order.

I am constantly seeing negative comments from those who call them selves bucs fans which blows me away because I believe that the team has the young talent that’s needed to win and that all of the coaching changes being made are exactly what the team needs now if we can pick up a few good free agents I think it should be a much better season

Based on recent history – you know, the last seven or years or so – it’s not difficult to see that the Bucs have been “managed” on the cheap and really haven’t made the kinds of efforts necessary to be a winner in the NFL. I keep reading that free agent spending doesn’t really matter and that it won’t help the win total too much, and that’s just insanity. Tampa is going to be way over 60 million dollars under the cap, but they won’t come close to spending that – I bet they won’t spend half of it, and recent history proves my point.

I have routinely gone to three or four games a year for the last 15 seasons or so, but only went to one last year. And unless they should show a concerted effort at improving the roster, I doubt I go to even one.

I don’t understand why joebucsfan, the Tampa Times, the Tampa Tribune and most local media members continue to carry the water for the ownership here. It must have something to do with access.

The first line in every Buccaneers story should be something like, “The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have for the eighth consecutive year spent the least amount of money on players in the NFL, have . . . ” It’s dishonest not to acknowledge the 45,000 pound elephant in the room, just as it is to downplay its importance.

    Joe here,

@kaput – Welcome. It’s a wonderful chicken and egg argument. Did the Bucs not spend and operate on the cheap? Or did they simply draft so horrendously that they didn’t have the players in-house to pay handsomely? Also, if the Brett Favre deal that Team Glazer signed off on and was inches from happening goes down, then his gigantic contract would have changed the cash landscape quite a bit. …Also, there’s the matter of the Bucs being among the highest spenders on coaches over the last several years.

Nobody here is ignoring the elephant as you call it of the Bucs’ payroll numbers, nor does Joe really have concern about “access.” JoeBucsFan is commentary driven and only takes advantage of a small percentage of the great access it actually has. On that front, Joe can’t speak for his media colleagues. Without access, their products would be quite different.

That caller is a perfect example of a leisure Bucs fan who gets his main Bucs news from ESPN and Pat Yakkysak.

First, thanks for responding! Seriously, very classy.

So, Raheem Morris was a high priced coach? He got that job mostly because he was cheap. (Sure, having Gruden under contract cost a pretty penny but that’s the price of doing business – they own an NFL team, they can afford it. Heck, they own Man U as well.)

And what about Jeff Garcia? He was benched so that he couldn’t reach an incentive, how is that not cheap? There are no chickens or eggs to consider with that fiasco.

And I’m not sure how the potential of signing one player a few years ago, and the impact that he would have had on the salary cap situation, changes the fact that they didn’t actual sign the player and didn’t actually spend the money. They’ve been the cheapest team in the league for years.

I would hate the Bucs to turn into the Redskins in terms of spending on big named free agents, but it doesn’t need to be that. How many Buccaneer linebackers or defensive backs would have even made half the rosters of the NFL in ’11? Not very many, and there were free agents that could have helped in that regard last season.

Anyway, I appreciate the response. My little rant is over, for now at least.

A: Malcolm Glazer spent millions. B:A baby seal walks into a club. this team is going nowhere. “The future is looking brighter”? I have looked into a flashlight Joe it’s almost the same.

  13. passthebuc Says:

@eric. are you being rational or not.

  14. passthebuc Says:

I have a wait and see attitude regarding current the current hiring.

To make this team a contender, they need to bring in 4-5 free agents and draft well.

  15. Bobby Says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll repeat myself….I believe everyone will see that with new coaches who demand disciplined play, we will find out that the players we have are actually much more talented than they appeared last year. I don’t believe talent is the issue. I believe discipline and poor game planning were major factors in the demise of the Bucs. My prediction is that the fans will be absolutley amazed at the product that hits the field on our first game day. I don’t think we will resemble the Bucs of 2011 in the least..on either side of the ball.
