Linebackers, Secondary To Be Gutted

January 1st, 2012

Could linebacker Quincy Black be among the many changes to the Bucs defense next year?

If the Dixie Chicks happen to put up 25 points on the Bucs by the time the game ends early this evening, it will mark a franchise worst for points allowed in a season.

That’s a real good way for a defensive coordinator to change his home mailing address.

The play of the Bucs linebackers has been no less than horrid this season and the Bucs secondary, to be kind, has been leaky.

Those are the two main culprits as the Bucs are on the cusp of a dreadful team record. And it’s those two elements that will likely be completely reworked in the offseason, so says Don Parr of ProFootballWeekly.com.

With the Buccaneers setting a new standard for the rock-bottom point in their season almost every week — they will set a new franchise record for points allowed if they give up 25 points vs. the Falcons Sunday — big changes could be coming to the team, including some significant restructuring on defense. The franchise is committed to developing its young defensive linemen — DT Gerald McCoy has said he’s ahead of schedule in his rehab from a torn biceps that landed him on injured reserve — and is very optimistic about their future. Sources expect linebacker and the secondary will be the areas the team focuses on strengthening. Starters OLB Geno Hayes, SS Sean Jones and CB Ronde Barber will be free agents and might not be back and there’s a good chance there will be a new defensive coordinator whether head coach Raheem Morris, who currently serves in that capacity, is fired or not.

If there is a new Bucs coach, Joe expects to see pretty much a totally new secondary when the 2012 season kicks off. Ronde Barber, as much as Joe loves him, will probably retire. Sean Jones is a free agent and though he will never be John Lynch, is one of the team’s leading tacklers.

And if there is a new coach, Joe doubts seriously if Aqib Talib will be back. Surely a new coach won’t give him all the rope he has enjoyed the past few years and quite frankly, Joe is pretty certain Talib simply isn’t worth all the drama.

Foster will probably be back. Oh there will be cha cha changes.

    Happy New Year!!!

  3. Thomas 2.2 Says:

I would take Carrie Fisher over Rah Rah “cliche excuse”
    Morris.

The state of Texas is going to tighten the rope on Talib, he is a punk and I have no doubt deserves everything that he has coming to him.

I want him out of our community, it is punks like him and Kellen that rot the team from the inside. Rip those problems out along with their enabler and encourager and things can start to heal.

Turn off the music at practice, stop the loafing and joking at practice, get to work in 2012 all new!

Any truth to the rumor that Jeff Fisher was spotted at the Bucs Team Hotel yesterday?

  5. BucfaninMI Says:

Brian Billick, he’ll kick some lazy asses! That’s what they need!

  6. Garv Says:

On reading more, I think the Jeff Fisher sighting is more likely a coincidence.
You don’t do it this way and I don’t think Jeff would go for it while another HC still had the job. Just my opinion.

    Happy New Year!!!

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Garv…the way the Bucs Organization has been operating lately, they have probably bungled the coaching search already by Fisher being caught in their team hotel.

  8. TurnThePage Says:

A team shouldnt cut someone until they get a replacement.

Just like the mistake made by not bringing Ruud back when the Bucs werent ready to lose him, the Bucs shouldnt just cut Black or not re-sign Geno Hayes without a replacement in place. I think with all the experience that Black and Hayes have, they should be made backups even if we did in fact find their replacemnts.

I mean, the Bucs are too thin and in no position to just outright start cutting guys. Afterall, this deviates from the plan of building a foundation based on youth.

If you dont resign veterans, Ruud and Caddy, especially when you have the cap space, then the team fails to folow through on the plan anyway… making all of pain and suffering from rookie mistakes one big waste of time.

  9. Mean D Says:

    NO RETREADS! Hire Rob Chudzinski!

  10. eric Says:

Bring em all into camp, especially Talib, and have real competition.

On a short leash of course.

If Fisher is at team hotel then Apple Roof may have been right all along.

  11. Nick Says:

What I don’t understand is how the expectation for the LB’s and secondary ever got to where it was. The only top pick is Talib. Foster is the highest pick of the LB’s and hes a rookie. Geno hayes was a 7th rounder. We had a 7th rounder in Grimm starting. The units are failing but its not like they were heavily invested in, like the D line. So Rah’s getting fired for literally not being able to make chicken salad out of chicken $hit.

    Billick is not a retard.

I don’t see anybody giving Sean Jones or Geno Hayes a big contract in free agency. They may be back to compete for jobs. I simply think they should cut Quincy Black, unless competition lights a fire under him. I see Dakota Watson really showing up at camp again and beating people out.

LB & DB will be a focus in the draft, but in the first round, if there is a play maker on offense when the Bucs pick in the 1st round they should take him. In fact, I’m inclined to suggest the Bucs should take the best player available with the first pick regardless of position. If a “freak” is available, take him.

  15. Brad Says:

Mark Dominic needs to go along with Black. No wonder the Glazers didn’t let Mark sign any Free Agents. First bad contracts to Clayton, Black. Then he rewards Jackson with an added year after he let his teammates down not once but twice. Then he allows Talib to run around without any disciplinary action. It’s no wonder the nuts are running the asylum. Not sure who new coach will be but he has to be someone that rules with an iron fist. These young guys obviously need a hard ass..

Jeff Fisher? The stoner guy from American Dad?

I hate to say this but is anyone going to actually watch this game???………………I am.

  19. SteveK Says:

Thank goodness, only one more terrible game left. Our effort is going to be crappy, and tomorrow morning heads must roll.

Peace out Rah, Talib, Q. Black, Trueblood, and maybe even Dom.

Glazers better step up next year bc these past 3 years have been nothing great.

Last year was a fluke, and after our 10th straight loss it will become a sad reality.

We need an Offensive minded coach to “save” Freeman. We need a D coordinator that can show our $60 million DT how to properly tackle.

    This offseason should be fun.

Haynesworth better be gone bc you can’t win with a selfish POS out there, you just can’t. We hav too much of that going on out there right now.

I wish the players that don’t play hard will be blackballed from the entire NFL. No excuse to have a guy ou there getting paid too mich money, and not playing 100%.

I only feel bad for Ronde, he is a beast, and I understand 1,000% if he wants to go be a nickel back/safety on a contender after this year.

New Sherrie in town next week. I want a guy that is going to put his foot down, and send the lazy players packing.

It is sad how they have given up.

Good luck Rah! I sincerely wish you the best. It is not entirely your fault, o’l “guitar zero” GM didn’t give you a darn thing to work with. Dom better be ready to pay the price too, it is only fair.

It is sad to say, but even Ruud(with his limited abilities) would have made this LB Corps a lil better.

Bye bye Talib, you need to pay your dues. You are just a WOFT ( waste of freaking talent).

Happy New Year’s Joe, and everyone.

Thomas 2.2: you were right all along, and I wish you werent, but wow.

  20. SteveK Says:

@ CanadianBuc, no I am going to clean my gutters out, rather than watching this.

I am not getting robbed of 3 hours on a Sunday to watch this BS.

We as fans are only enabling these losers by watching them.

I may tune it to watch Ronde for what could be his last game as a Buc. He is a HOFer in my book, and THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING RONDE! God Bless.

  21. Aceofaerospace Says:

Tick Tick Tick Tick , etc

  22. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

They are showing the game here in Texas so I will be glued to the TV.

  23. Pete Dutcher Says:

Anyone wanting Dominick gone at this point is an idiot.

I don’t care if he’s made some bad re-signings…McKay did all the time. Allen did all the time.

When it comes to the draft, I think Mark Dominick is straight up on top of things. I’m not convinced that some players that Rah bashers are writing off are as bad as made out.

Black shouldn’t be cut until it doesn’t cost us contract-wise (as badly) or until we get a good replacement. Even if we draft a replacement, it would be better to let black play another year and develop his replacement. If the new guy earns a starting role before that, then demote black for the remainder of the year.

If we bring in a replacement veteran, let him compete for the starting role.

Another option is to trade Black…I would love this. Maybe we could get a 5th for him.

Let Hayes go. I never felt he was a Brooks replacement and I’m glad we can turn the page on that project.

    SteveK
You enjoy cleaning those gutters, and while you are doing it, keep telling yourself you are a Bucs fan. I don’t care HOW BAD they play…me watching the Bucs is not supporting any individual such as a coach, player or owner…it’s supporting a franchise.

  24. thibs5599 Says:

Lets just put it this way, if black is a starter next year our defense will not improve. Constantly out of position vs the run and pass.

  25. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Pete you expose how clueless you are:

We have the future Sam on the roster: Foster was supposed to start the season as a Sam backer where he played mostly at WU. It is impossible to say that Dom has drafted well yet have a team this horrible.

How many pro bowlers has Dom drafted with 25 daft picks or so?

  26. Thomas 2.2 Says:

How many draft picks can we say have panned out? GMC – whoops? Price – miss. Benn? Disaster? Kyle Moore? Fulton? Biggers? Bowden? Lewis?
