“Let’s Wait To See Who The Coordinators Are”

January 26th, 2012
On his radio show today, former Bucs guard Ian Beckles was peppered with negativity from callers upset by the pending Greg Schiano hire, but Beckles says fans need to show some restraint.

Never one to hesitate to throw verbal daggers at Barrett Ruud Buccaneers management, former Bucs guard Ian Beckles is not about to blast the hire of Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano to replace Raheem Morris as Tampa Bay’s head man.

At least not yet.

Beckles, speaking as co-host of the Ron and Ian Show on WDAE-AM 620 this morning, said it’s not fair to judge the Schiano hire before hearing the man speak as Buccaneers head coach or before his staff is assembled.

“I don’t recall everyone giving a thumbs-up when Tony Dungy was named head coach here,” Beckles said. “I’m going to wait to see who the coordinators are and see what his philosophy is before” I give an opinion.

Joe’s of the same mind. Joe gets that news of the likely Schiano hire doesn’t have fans high-fiving around water coolers across the Tampa Bay area today, but Joe’s not about to be negative about a fresh head coach before he does anything or puts his team in place.

One thing Joe can be certain about is that while Schiano and Raheem are New Jersey natives and were defensive backs coaches, that’s probably where there similarities end.

All I can say is when our Two blockbuster coaching hires were made (John McKay, John Gruden) , I didn’t here anybody say “Oh let’s wait and see who the coordinators are going to be”. I hope he is the next great HC in the NFL.

  2. MrGone Says:

Could it be Chud or Sherman for OC? They both had 2nd interviews yesterday.

  3. justin Says:

i want del rio on d

  4. Mr. Patrick Says:

I really do think this is a very good hire. He’s a very solid coach. However, in all fairness to Mr. Schiano, it doesnt matter who the coach is here until the Glazers decide to be active in free agency.

  5. TurnThePage Says:

Now let’s hear Shaun King’s take.

    🙂

  6. passthebuc Says:

Maybe they bring back Morris for the DC job.

  7. Jake Says:

Butch Davis as DC per Dan Sileo tweet.

  8. stevek Says:

The Glazers better step up in Free Agency.

If they refuse to spend on FA’s, I saw the Bay Area lights their torches and brings their pitch forks to One Buc Place.

They need to be committed to winning, period.

  9. Nick Says:

    You’re so dumb Ian..oh wait..he’s right

I have a really good feeling about this hire. I try to remain optimistic by nature when it comes to the Bucs, but I think this guy will be great for the team. I’m hoping to see some splash free agent signings and a productive draft, and I’m very interested to see who joins the staff, but this is so much better than Sherman and Childress. I don’t think this is another Raheem situation at all, and the Bucs have a history of doing well when it comes to their ‘second choice’ for coaches.

And please, don’t start with the talk that this was the fifth or sixth coach the Bucs approached and made a job offer. There is a difference between being interviewed and being offered a job. Wade Phillips was never going to be offered the job, he knew this, and declined to INTERVIEW to continue preperation for the Texans playoff game. Jeff Fisher was never brought in for an interview let along offered the job. I think the Glazers were smart to avoid committing big money and a lot of years to a pro coach that has a proven record that is average at best. And everyone knew Fisher was headed to St.Louis to begin with, Miami was never an option, and was used to generate leverage.

Chip Kelly was the only other candidate confirmed to have received an offer, and I have a feeling Philbin would have been considered but he went to Miami, so he did not advance beyond the INTERVIEW process. Let’s see how this offseason plays out. There will be free agents available in their prime that can help this team, and the Bucs have no excuse to not bring in this talent. Yes, the draft helps, but the slate is wiped clean and with a few key pieces, this team can be a playoff contender faster than most people think.

I’m hoping for Hue Jackson as offensive coordinator, but I can’t really see his personality jiving with Schiano. Butch Davis as D coordinator makes sense give his ties with Schiano…Let’s see how this develops.

  12. Bobby Says:

Don’t you people realize that the Glazers HAVE TO SPEND in FA per the new CBA?? Get off of the FA kick for crying out loud. We are in fantastic shape with a new coach and a butt load of $$$ to spend in FA this year and next and a #5 pick in the draft. I’m excited.

  13. kh Says:

nice, good to hear about Butch Davis.

  14. gotbbucs Says:

Ha, Ian Beckles, the voice of reason.
He’s exactly right on this one. The ones bitching haven’t got a clue and most likely never will. Until you’ve heard the guy talk, explain his philosophies, know who his staff is going to be, how the hell can some of you be so certain that he’s a bad coach?

  15. bucfanjeff Says:

Exactly as i said on the last story, oc and dc is the key.

  16. Bobby Says:

Butch Davis would be a great hire as DC. He has been both a HC and a DC and has the Super Bowl rings to prove how good he was as DC at Dallas. Like it so far.

I can only hope you’re right! If, in his first game, I see Schiano directing people to where they’re sitting in the stadium like Morris was in his excitement of being an NFL Head Coach, I’ll no longer waste my money on season tickets!

  18. kh Says:

Bobby the Bucs don’t have to spend to meet the minimum until 2013

  19. Cmurda Says:

    ^^^^^^^^

    What Bobby said!

  20. Patrick Says:

Will we get to keep the Tampa 2 with Davis here?

  21. Aceofaerospace Says:

Keep watching highlights of Schiano sideline coaching on ESPN and I haven’t seen him chest-bump a single player yet. Brings a tear of joy to my eye.

  22. yar Says:

He took an almost non-existent football program and made it relevant using the leftovers from the other colleges. When he did have some players i.e. Ray Rice they were pretty good. That’s what you need to be able to do as a head coach. Not a bad hire at all. I can get behind the Bucs with this. (P.S. I am a season ticket holder)

  23. thibs5599 Says:

I love this hire, the guy shows emotion on the sideline and on the very first highlight I saw of him, he grabbed a players facemask and was not yelling, but scolding that player for something. That is what this team needs.

  24. BucFan South Tampa Says:

I ebt you wont see him at Drynk or 717 South Howard friday nights before a home game.

  25. Bulldog Says:

This reeks period….Jersey Shore meets the NFL ,,One NFL commentator just said the wants young and cheap and he was neither..at least he has the guts to tell it like it is.

  26. tj Says:

Take it to the bank we will hire. The steelers offensive cord that was let go last week

  27. Garv Says:

Yeah, let’s ask Ian Becles and Shaun King for THEIR approval and opinion.
    GMAFB

    Just go away………..PLEASE!

This is a great hire that will prove itself for years to come.

  28. mark2001 Says:

Don’t think he will be as bad as Sherman would have been….don’t know how good he will be, but at least the upside is better.

  29. 941Buc Says:

This is a great hire, if and only if they let him pick his staff and spend money in free agency. I hope the Glazers were telling the truth when they said they would not lose out on getting players they want because of money. Love the Butch Davis or Del Rio ideas, I just wonder who they could get for OC. Any good ideas on that?

  30. saskbuco Says:

DC=Jim Tomsula 49ers defensive line coach
    OC=Joe Lombardi QB coach saints
    QB=Terry Shea
