Is Donald Penn Too Fat?

January 8th, 2012

Joe’s very much a fat-friendly guy. So Joe has a sensitive ear when it comes to potential fat-guy bias in the media.

In a look at the potential 2012 Bucs roster today, beat writer Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times offered brief takes on each member of the Bucs roster and offers an opinion on whether each will return under a new head coach.

For Donald Penn, Holder says Penn returns next season but claims Penn is still battling fat challenges. Remember, those concerns from rockstar general manager Mark Dominik prior to Penn scoring a massive contract prior to the 2010 season. But this is the first Joe’s heard of anyone hinting that Penn is having new or ongoing girth issues.

Donald Penn: Weight issues; didn’t finish 2011 strong.

Joe knows Penn had a subpar final quarter of the 2011 season, and Penn admitted as such on his radio show, but overall Penn is a damn good left tackle and had a solid season. And Joe’s surely not seeing how Penn’s weight got in his way in 2011, or is an issue moving forward.

The man has started 76 consecutive games.

Holder says Penn has “weight issues,”  and perhaps he’s busted weight limits set by the Bucs, but Joe hasn’t heard of any such offense and there’s no evidence Penn’s beef is holding him back.

Dude got a fat contract. Leave him alone, he’s on vacation right now eating everything in sight, getting fatter by the minute.

  2. RastaMon Says:

a little bit overweight perhaps…seems it is just his body type.
Maybe you could get some oldeer photos and post as a visual comparison.
Say did anyone see what good football teams play like yesterday ?
    I am so freak’n depressed !

  3. TurnThePage Says:

He has earned a nick name by now.

    Here’s one

    Ronald McDonald “Big Mac” Penn

  4. RastaMon Says:

    Nickname……I prefer “Meatloaf”

  5. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I was amazed at how for the most part the Saints O Line handled Detroit, and how they controlled the game.
I agree with Billick, Tampa needs to get better at the O Line so Freeman has time to throw.
I thought our old O Line coach did a better job then the new one did.

As far as weight goes, none of us has met a chicken wing he did not like.
Don Penn is a big dude, and like Rasta Mon says, it is just his body type.

  6. ClayBURN94 Says:

Haha Its funny cause hes fat!

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

Penn is circumferentially challenged and I believe it is an issue. It is an issue with Haynesworth, Miller, Price and Okam. All that extra blubber is a bad thing. It is just excess weight that has to be hauled around. It weakens you and slows you down. This is why a new Strength/Diet Coach was needed, and you’d think getting paid millions and having the privilege to play in the NFL would be enough motivation to lose the jelly roll. The question is how bad do you want it. Obviously the Bucs didn’t want it very bad this year. Many of the players have already had 3 strikes, and they should be out.

  8. JS Says:

Okay Joe(s) I’m convinced that you just lack other adjectives for Mr. Dominik as you insist on using the “rockstar” moniker. Especially since you refuse to explain why he is a “rockstar.” So I’ll help you out and give you a list of new ones you can choose from: ((Actually, Joe has explained the “rockstar” nickname dozens of times. — Joe))

    Underachieving Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Limited Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Dim-witted Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Moronic Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Birdbrained Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Feeble-minded Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Mentally-defective Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Slow-witted Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Stupid Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Pinhead Bucs GM Mark Dominik…
    Numbskull Bucs GM Mark Dominik…

I’m sure you can find one or two from that list. And if you need more I’ll be glad to help. No need to thank me Joe(s), just being a helpful and friendly Buc fan. 🙂

  9. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

No one would be saying anything if it were not for a few bad games:Dallas, Carolina, and Jacksonville. That’s it. He played very well outside of that run of three games. People just have disgustingly short memories, but I expect nothing less from Buc’s fans.

  10. TurnThePage Says:

All of the Rah Lovers used to just be in love with Mark D.

But now that Rah has met his fate, decided and fired by Mark D 🙂 , the ole Rah Lovers can’t seem to stand the Rockstar.

  11. Meh Says:

Penn is fine. Borderline pro bowler most years. Good for most of this year. Had a bad ending to the season. We really have much bigger things to worry about than Penn. There are 3 worse players than him on the line right now that I’m much more concerned about.

  12. stevie wonder Says:

Did his weight issues stop him from dominating Dwight freeney?

  13. Thomas 2.2 Says:

I call “Pig” Penn. He will probably eat himself out of being a top tier tackle. Hopefully Dom built weight penalties into his contract.

  14. ClayBURN94 Says:

Guys sorry to bring bad news but Jason la confornia said mike sherman could be announced bucs new Hc this week. http://m.nfl.com/news/09000d5d825d019e/sherman-well-positioned-to-be-next-buccaneers-head-coach/

  15. ClayBURN94 Says:

    Jason La Canfora*

  16. eric Says:

I heard on Rock’s show that Sherman is owed 5.8 million by A&M as a buy out, but is arguing he is owed 8.8 million due to an extension.

Nice argument to have, but it does show how badly the alum wanted rid of the guy.

  17. ClayBURN94 Says:

I think the problem was A&M was a spread college offense and sherman tried to make into pro style offemse. With that being said Sherman has a prrtty decent track record as a HC with the pack even though had Favre. I would be ok if we hire Sherman. He has experience.

  18. eric Says:

Didn’t we fire Chucky and Dungy for losing in the playoffs? So were gonna hire a guy who loses in the playoffs with Brett Favre? And has a Skip Holtz type college head coaching record? (actually not that good). Fired by one of the best organizations in the league? Why didn’t the Packers recognize he was a good coach? Why hasn’t another NFL team even considered the guy since he was let go by them?

Wow, I know folks wanna believe, and I admire that, but c’mon, is that really the best the rock star can do?

I thought we were leaving no stone unturned to win a championship.

I am thinking that selection will not be well received.

  19. mbaby Says:

Brad childress,Wade Phillips,Marty Schottenhimer and Mike Zimmerman next on the bucs list

  20. Northend Says:

Baby, just read Childress interviews Monday and they like Martyball as well.Zimmer and Phillips interviews to follow.WHERE’S BILLICK!!!!!!!!!

  21. BKNYfootballhead Says:

    @Thomas
I hope you’re right about his contract, I could see Penn eating depressed in this offseason. I’ll almost bet it’ll be a problem at camp.
“Pig” Penn is good, I’ll use that.
Let’s hope Freeman doesn’t come back to camp as “Stay Puff”.

  22. Northend Says:

Martyball would bring lil Martyball with him.(just read via twitter).not Gunna lie I’m kinda intrigued.we could do worse.lord knows ol schotty is due for a ring(and a walker).tweet said levy won with bills at 68.short term turn around then jr takes over…just sayin

  23. Northend Says:

Joe pickin up same info?what do you think?

  24. Northend Says:

Wiki schottenhiemer and look at the coaching tree that came from him.truly impressive.
Also Childress for oc maybe according to Jason lacafora

  25. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

It will not surprise me to see Mike Sherman named as our Head Coach.
I am OK with it too. A successful College Coach is all about being a great recruiter. LOL, that’s how a college coach gets his “draft picks”.
Mike Sherman is not charismatic, probably a poor recruiter.
But he is a solid NFL Coach, and a proven talent evaluator.
He was also the GM in GB, and did a good job picking talented players.
A rash of injuries hit the Packers, and that did him in.
I would prefer Billick, but doubt he can work with Dominik.
The Glazers are married to Dominik, it is what it is.’

  26. adam ant Says:

I guess I would be ok with Sherman if the Bucs actually did an exhaustive search, but they haven’t. Where is the Brian Billick interview? He is the same age as Sherman, has a better post season record, and definitely knows his stuff. I realize he has a big ego, but most of the great ones do. Billick is still my choice.

  27. Thomas 2.2 Says:

I agree Eric, but we are talking about a group that fired Gruden and hired Rah. Can anyone say that was done to win football games? No one sane can.

  28. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

I’m not believing anything until it’s official.

  29. eric Says:

If these are confirmed interviews i am getting back into my car at the skyway.

Where did you guys get this info?

  30. MTM Says:

Penn’s weight went up over the season do to depression caused by watching game film. Then binging on KFC to make all go away.
If the Bucs were winning his weight wouldn’t be talked about.
Speaking of appearances. Didn’t Freeman play better with the soul glow fro?

  31. raphael Says:

I heard 400lbs….holy crap …dude is to fat. remember that game where Penn has his back turn and was blocking with his butt….looked bad bro..like a scene out of deliverence….SQUEELLLLL !

  32. mbaby Says:

@Eric Please give ur keys to the car to ur wife before reading this out of safety of ur own life.http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/08/bucs-will-consider-various-former-nfl-coaches/

  33. ClayBURN94 Says:

Google rick stroud twitter. Joe where are you man!! You’ve been a little slow lately

  34. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

If he would lose 20-30 pounds think how good he would be!!! But thats up to him if he wants to be the best he can be!!

  35. eric Says:

Joe might go to the skyway if they hire Marty.

He doesnt like anybody who even coached with him.

Personally, I love Marty. Give the young guys a father figure to look up to.

Vermeil pulled it off with Rams.

  36. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

What makes you think he’d be better lighter? This was his best season to date.

  37. MTM Says:

So Childress is a candidate. The candidate list is a very uninspiring group. Much like the GM and ownership.

  38. Capt.Tim Says:

If everyone played their position as well as Penn does, we’d be stacking Lombardi trophies on top of each other.

Our list of coaching candidates Sucks! Martyball? No friggin way. I think things are turning for the worst. They have got to do better than this scrap heap. Sherman- Meybe, but not excited about it. The rest seem like desperate measures. Billick is a choice I could stand. But, like Fisher, they seem uninterested in him. I said last spring that Dominick was screwing the team, with his stupid refusal to sign FAs. That was pure stupidity. I think he will screw the team again with his selection of a head coach.

I think we will suck until Dom is also kicked to the curb.

I believe it was Gary Shelton who penned this beauty, about Joel Glazer and Dom’s press conference about firing Raheem
” a guy who didn’t spend enough money, and a guy who didn’t sign enough players, sat down to justify firing a guy who didn’t win enough games!”

Get ready for more of the same

  39. Brandon Says:

Penn definitely has gotten fatter since last season. He is a good LT but if he can keep himself in shape he will. no doubt, play better. It’s physically impossible for a man that is required to do what Penn does, to be better as fat as he finished the season. If he’s in better shape, he’s a better player.

  40. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Capt Tim: be careful being critical of Dom, Joe and the sheep get real whiny if you don’t heap praise on his 17-31 a–.

I thin Dom would be great in a different role – say one buc place parking attendant or receptionist or Glazer car detailed.

Basically, isn’t he just a Glazer hanger onner?

  41. mark2001 Says:

    Simple question…simple answer….

Only after the midpoint of the season.

Maybe the problem is too much halloween candy and turkey.

  42. 911bucs Says:

I think the Bucs need a new trainer. Look at other NFL teams. 49er’s,Cards, steelers etc all other teams. Their players are ripped. speaking of the Cards Ray Horton is available HC.

  43. Thomas Says:

I’m sure this has been addressed to DP. With that said I’m sure Penn will be back stronger and less weight 2012. He has a great attitude and takes pride in his craft.

  44. Capt.Tim Says:

Thomas- gotta agree. The guy drafts ok, but he is a horrible judge of Vets!
Contracts for Clayton and Quincy Black- too stupid for words. Any twelve year old in the stadium would have told him those two guys suck! You can’t be the brains of the franchise, when you are the stupidly blind to players you look at EVERY DAY!
Last spring, I was jumping up and down about his refusal to sign free agents! I said our LBers and Secondary had to be improved, and our O-line and RBs had depth and talent questions. Everyone knew it
Yet Dom did nothing, and what followed was totally predictable.
The guy can’t judge vet talent, and has got to go. Obviously the Glazers disagree.
Expect the team to suck until they wise up to the fact that Dominick is NOT the man to make major decissions for this team.
Probably another coaching change away. Sorry Freeman, didn’t mean to waste your career- start screaming for a trade, while there is still time!

  45. Mike J Says:

I see my post, disagreeing with Joe’s money-based opinion, has been censored.
Joe can go straight to hell.

Dude, Not seeing a post under “Mike J” in that thread. You might have automically gone to spam for racist commentary or naughty words, or you messed up on your end. Sorry you’re so bitter. Joe
