The Quincy Black Giveaway

September 11th, 2011

Why? Why? Why?

Joe can’t thrust more agony upon himself by watching the videotape on this one. It was too bizarre and too poor of a poor choice by Quincy Black, and Joe doesn’t have any new expletives to spew.

During what turned out to be the Lions’ winning drive today, when Detroit went up 27-13 in the third quarter, Sean Jones forced a fumble in Lions territory and Quincy Black caught the bouncing ball with his feet IN BOUNDS, and as he fell out of bounds he proceeded to hurl the ball back into the field of play, as if he was Dennis Rodman diving into the front row seats for a loose rebound.

A Lions player fell on the ball.

Then Detroit proceeded to toss a first down pass to Maurice Stovall, rip off four consecutive runs for 31 yards, and then two passes for a touchdown.

Joe can’t imagine what Black was thinking. This isn’t basketball. Maybe Black’s covered too many kicks and punts and thought he was saving a ball from a touchback?

Regardless, it was a back-breaking screwup by a man Joe believes is the most overpaid linebacker in football.

May be Black was not even sure if he was going to land both his feet within bounds once he possesses the ball, it happened so fast on the sidelines, I do not think that guy can be blamed. It was more of Ronde’s fault for not letting the ball go into Talib’s hands.

  2. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Not to mentiion our overpriced OLine

  3. D Says:

Joe, don’t bother complaining about this play– complain about Sean Jones falling down on backing up Talib in that MEGATRON touchdown.

Black went to make a play, a BIG play, SURROUNDED by Bucs— Ronde tipped it but it was pretty clear it could/would have been caught otherwise.

  4. ReaderM Says:

Yea, I agree with everyone else so far. Black obviously thought he wouldn’t be able to get both feet in and decided to swing it back to a bunch of Bucs, namely Heyward. It’s Ronde who’s going to be sick looking at the tape of that play later more then anything

  5. Patrick Says:

    @Scotty

And our overpriced D-line. Of course, Bowers and Clayborn are rookies, but McCoy hasn’t made an impact and Price can’t even get on the field.

  6. Espo Says:

I just jumped off the Quincy Black bandwagon. That was one of the dumbest moves I’ve ever seen.

Not quite as dumb as when the Lions spiked the ball on 4th down during a Wild Card game here in 97. I kept reminding the Detroit fans around me about that one.

  7. Architek Says:

Man we have so many holes on this roster but time wil tell. We just have to be patient and I suspect there will be more black-outs because this team has a long way to go before consistently putting four quarters of football together.

  8. below me Says:

looks like tarzan, plays like jane.

  9. Hawaiian Buc Says:

In hindsight, it was a dumb play. However, it was really close to being a huge play to our advantage. Had Ronde not attempted to grab it (in no way his fault, just bad luck), we were going to have a really good return. If that would have happened, Black would have been the hero. That play was a perfect representation of our day. Quincy Black is not the reason we lost. I really wish everyone would stop trying to pin the blame of a loss on one particular person. We lost because of everyone, and Detroit was just better today.

  10. Matt Says:

It was a smart as hell play by Black. He knew he couldn’t posess the ball, so he launched it back into the field of play so that someone else could get it.

Unfortunately, Barber tipped it away from the DE who was waiting for it and Detroit recovered.

  11. Mauha Deeb Says:

@matt What? Black clearly had possession with both feet in. It was a risky move. If it worked, great. Since it didn’t, he should feel the scorn.

  12. TheBull Says:

    It was a mistake.

Overall though, Black played really well IMO.

  13. d clark Says:

NA not Blacks fault two people were there to get that ball. If he makes it he made a hell of a play but barber not realizing there were other bucs around him tips the ball or try and catch it himself, tipped the ball. I think Black played really well imo. It looked boneheaded but he probably didnt know if he was still inbounds and tryed to get it to one of the 3 bucs. It probably would of been a touchdown if ronde doesnt tip it. Alot more plays to blame other then that one. Sean Jones played terrible imo other then forcing the fumble on that play.

  14. Steve Says:

No Mauha Deeb, Black left the ground, then grabbed the ball, then as he was about to land out of bounds so he tossed it back into play. He did not have possession before his feet left the ground. Good try by Black to get a turnover.

CAN WE PLEASE F*CKING STOP W/ THE THIRD PERSON “JOE THINKS THIS” AND “JOE THINKS THAT” stuff???

Wasn’t funny the first 600 g*dd*mn times I read it. This blog has some good information on it, quite honestly it’s one of the better bucs blogs out there, but please, please, please knock that cute sh!t off.

  16. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @ek,

Welcome to Joe Bucs Fan. This is the way Joe writes on this blog. Don’t let it bother you so much, it’s really not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. I know you are bitter about the Bucs losing, but slow your roll a little.

  17. d clark Says:

And Joe you need to stop with the Quincy hate he played pretty good today. Maybe one missed tackle. And the flip back fumble really wasnt that bad of a play if say o ronde instead of tipping it (goes to a wide open crowder where it was going to go and he takes it for a td).

  18. Eric Says:

Well looking ahead Mcnabb only threw for 39 yards for the entire game against the chargers.

    beyond pathetic.

D should do better next week.

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

” the mist overpaid linebacker in the NFL”

Yup. Quincy Jane. Last year they tried to make him the center point of the Defense. He did absolutely nothing.

Today, he was supposed to cover the shallow middle of the field. It was open all day, and stafford threw there when ever the mood stuck him. That didn’t happen last year. And the defensive play calling was lousy. Again, we frequently got caught, not being set.

Foster looks like he has talent. Black and Hayes aren’t gonna ever become NFL starting grade LBs. We are always gonna be weak against the Run while they are starting.

  20. Brisbee Says:

Quincy Black had the ball in his hands and threw it away. Case closed

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

TheBull- uh, no He didn’t. He was horrible in pass coverage in his Zone. and they ran up the middle with no concern for him at all. He might as well have stayed on the Bench.

And they kept showing his buddy, Geno, hitting himself in the head everytime he screwed up! I’m surprised he didn’t knock himself out, as he shoulda punched himself every play, until about 6 minutes left, when he finally decided to play, as usual.

  22. admin Says:

    Joe here,

    @ek — Joe’s not changing. Love, Joe.

  23. Stevek Says:

I think Calvin Johnson showd off his “megatron” Arguement.

Why don’t we go no huddle?

  24. NickinMelb Says:

There were several unbelievable inexplainable plays. At that point in the game we were just trying to hang in against the Lions who proceeded to keep dismantling us afterwards. It would have been a huge momentum change for him to just come down with two feet and give us the ball. The lateral was a HUGE risk in a critical part of the game. Speaking of bad plays did anyone see Josh Johnson casually go out of bounds ONE freaking yard short of the first down on 3rd down????? That showed either total lack of awareness on the field or the wimpiest bootleg going for the marker I have EVER seen in my entire life. Good one Josh 4th quarter down by 2 TD’s but lets not worry about getting the first down?? Whatever happened to diving for a first down when it counted? Sorry Josh J you totally lost my respect on that play. You need to make amends for that somehow soon.

  25. gotbbucs Says:

there was no way black was coming down with that ball inbounds. black did not play well overall but that was just a smart play by him to keep that ball alive.

  26. Joke Says:

That’s not how I remember it. Looked to me like wasn’t going to be able to establish possession inbounds, so he batted/threw it back in bounds.

I deleted the game off my DVR in disgust. I’ll record the short cut and watch it again.

To people in Tampa — is the NFL Game Rewind ( https://gamerewind.nfl.com/nflgr/secure/schedule ) free for y’all? I remember in seasons past, they were making blacked-out games free to watch online via Game Rewind for people in the affected market.

  27. The D Says:

Stupid article Joe. Black was almost out of bounds (maybe if you watched it again you would see) and tossed the ball back to Tim Crowder who was right there, but Ronde swatted the ball away at the last second. If its anyone’s fault, its Ronde’s for hitting it away from Crowder
