Bucs Sign A Free Agent — From Another Team

August 15th, 2011

Joe knows there are still some misguided fans running through the streets of Tampa screaming in agony for the Bucs to spend money on free agents from other teams.

Well, perhaps these folks will be somewhat soothed to learn the Bucs are still out there combing the free agent pool looking for help. Today Tampa Bay signed former Buffalo Bills cornerback Ashton Youboty to a two-year deal, so reports Buccaneers.com.

The Bills originally selected Youboty early in the third round (70th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft.  He became a restricted free agent in 2010 but was re-signed by Buffalo to a one-year deal.  Youboty is the second unrestricted free agent Tampa Bay has added from another team in 2011; on July 29, the Bucs signed former Atlanta punter/kickoff specialist Michael Koenen.

Youboty (5-11, 189) played in 43 games with seven starts during his Bills tenure, contributing 60 tackles, one interception, seven passes defensed, two sacks and one forced fumble.  Last year he appeared in 13 games, playing primarily on special teams.

With defensive backs as his specialty, Joe suspects Raheem Morris will shed some interesting light on Youboty later today. But Joe suspects this guy’s likely here as a special teams guy.

Is it pronounce You Booty, or Yo Booty ? I can hear it now “Your Booty draws the flag”
Well, Tampa can never have enough cornerbacks, I say good move.

  2. kh Says:

    I believe its pronounced Ya-Booty

  3. kh Says:

Is this insurance for a Talib suspension?

  4. aldo Says:

to me, its a goodbye to elbert mack

  5. Mauha Deeb Says:

I don’t really know if the sign adds to the teams at all. Seems like we are Planning on keeping 6 CBs. Talib, Barber, Biggers, Lewis, Gaitor, and Youboty. Looks like Mack will be walking the plank. After last weeks huge gaff of spearing KC’s KR before he had the ball, Holland too will not make it. I doubt he makes it to the next game after this signing. That is, unless this is a signing because they caught wind of a possible Talib suspension.

  6. Not A Rocket Surgeon Says:

depth… and Talib, Lewis and Black are nursing some injuries. Also a ST player.

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

    so…who did they cut?

  8. Chris FWC :) Says:

    TE Jose Cruz

  9. Capt.Tim Says:

I agree. A good idea to bring in an experienced starter. Just in case Tib pulls another Talib

I’m not hollering to spend money. The team looks too good not to have faith and Patience. Signing another Experienced corner makes me rest easier.
Both OLBs still worry me, though.

  10. Pete Dutcher Says:

Is his name spelled right? He isn’t even listed on the NFL website. Quite the treasure…

  11. Pete Dutcher Says:

NM=…wasn’t listed under players and didn’t pop up on name search for free agency. But did show up when I looked at all the FA defensive backs.

He was pretty good at OSU. He’s from Liberia and played hs ball in Texas. I think he’ll do just fine on ST’s and reserve. I like the addition.

  13. CharlieB Says:

Free Agents are only to correct mistakes in the draft. Myron Lewis is my guess. Guy is never healthy and doesn’t flash when he is.

  14. tj Says:

Ohio state guy. He us remembered here in Columbus for getting burned in the Texas game . Left school early. Below average corner.

  15. BigMacAttack Says:

Could be preseason body just to keep from more injuries. If he plays well He could make, if not he won’t. I believe Coach Morris gives every player a close look at how he produces before he makes the cuts.

  16. Jrock (mobile) Says:

Charlie, i disagree on Myron Lewis. He is often injured, but definitely does flash when given the opportunity.

He was targeted A LOT last year when he got gametime, and he stood his ground like a champ. Tape proves it.

I think this signs the departure of Mack, who is never injured and often dissapoints when given opportunity. Can’t wait to see him go

  17. jvato24 Says:

I wouldnt bet the Farm this guy makes the roster. I doubt there is a signing bonus that would hurt the cap with a release.

  18. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Just competition for the last roster spot. In other words, Mack. Nothing more to see here.

  19. BecklesHeartsRuud Says:

Yes…this guys last name is priceless. He is worth rooting for just because of how much fun his name is to say.
