What The Bucs Should Do

July 13th, 2011

Could Jason Snelling help the Bucs with running back depth?

While NFL fans are gritting their teeth that this asinine lockout was even started much less that it continues to drag on worse than an in-grown toenail, fans are in no short supply of opinions on what the Bucs should do.

Just throw the name “Barrett Ruud” or “Aqib Talib” out there and it’s like an internet version of Shark Week.

Not to be outdone, NFL analyst Pat Kirwan has a few ideas what the Bucs should do. Naturally, he invokes the expected names: Davin Joseph, Quincy Black, Ruud, Talib and Cadillac Williams.

Oh, and a new name Joe hasn’t heard prior to yesterday: Jason Snelling.

Kirwan is of the mind the Bucs need yet another third down back and he believes Snelling may fit the Bucs needs.

Sign another running back: The Buccaneers hit it big when they signed running back LeGarrette Blount last year. He is a young, inexpensive player who should be a 1,000-yard runner for the foreseeable future. Still, a solid third-down back — especially if Cadillac Williams isn’t coming back — would be a priority. The Buccaneers have said they are not interested in Tiki Barber, but I wonder if they would like to add Jason Snelling or even Reggie Bush, if the Saints can’t redo his deal.

Now unless the Bucs got Bush on a rock-bottom discount deal, Joe would be stunned if Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik would sign him. First, he’s oft-injured. Though supremely talented, Joe’s just as good of a running back if Bush is standing on the sidelines in street clothes pining for a Kardashian.

    Who is David Joseph??

Snelling wouldn’t be a bad idea but I prefer Snelling. I admit its because I’m such a homer.

  2. Espo Says:

Haha I mean I prefer Cadi. Oops.

  3. HFXBUC Says:

Snellling is a big talent. Would be a very addition. Catches well runs hard and is big and physical. I watched a lot of falcons games last year he would be a great addition.

  4. sunrisejeff Says:

Get some RB depth and hurt a division foe? Sounds good to me!

  5. Chris FWC :) Says:

He looks bigger and plays bigger than 5’11” 229 lbs.

  6. MOBucs Says:

Chris FWC… I was gonna say the same thing. Actually I thought he was taller and heavier than that. He plays even bigger than I thought. Would be great depth and come a lot cheaper than other FA RBs.

  7. CalicoJack Says:

Didn’t they fill the need in the draft? 5’11” 240…

Where as I dont expect us to break the bank on Namdi,
I do predict we will pay, more than Id like to see, for Bush.

  9. Dan Says:

nah, we got bradford, keep caddi and dont forget huggy and lumpy. we straight on backs.

only offensive position i see us investing in would be interior line.

defense, would be db or safety.

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

I see Snelling as Falcons’ leftovers that the Bucs don’t need. I may be wrong, but every RB on the Bucs’ roster now is better than Snelling. I’m going to have to give a big “No Thank You Very Much”, and Pat, again you’re clueless. Blah, blah, blah, have to fill air time with hot air. Pat needs a good cold front to shut his duma$$ up.

  11. BigMacAttack Says:

Did I say Snelling? or is it Smelling? Same diff.

  12. Hire Greg Olson! Says:

BigMacAttack proves, once again, his own ignorance.

After Caddy, we don’t have a guy that’s started a full 16 games in a season. Behind Caddy, who can pass block?? Snelling would be a welcomed addition to the backfield. He picked up the slack for ATL when Turner went down. He’s a vet that knows how to play the game at the pro level. He could probably be had for a good price and he still has lots of tread on the tires.

I’m still in favor of retaining Caddy, but really you’re gonna choose the guy with two season-ending knee injuries over a back in his prime ready to break out???

  13. Patrick Says:

We need to keep Caddy…he saved freeman’s a$$ last year in pass blocking.

I’d be in favor of bringing in Reggie Bush because he is a pretty good weapon.

Caddy, Bush, Blount…….sounds good. Another guy we should consider signing is Noel Devine. Undrafted free agent who was one of the better RB’s in the draft. Another Blount type signing?

  14. Capt.Tim Says:

More offensive weapons for Josh is always a good idea, although I too would like to see them keep Caddy.

  15. Captain Stagger Says:

Noel Devine……really?….150 lb rb, No thank you……Chad Spann or Nic Grigsby would be great udfa 3rd down backs to grow with Blount and Freeman. Spann is this years Blount.

    Blount
    Bradford
    Spann
    Graham
    Lumpkin
    Huggy on pup

  16. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

We don’t need any more running backs in Tampa. This Bradford guy is the real deal, and we still have Graham and Caddy to back up Blount.

  17. Captain Stagger Says:

We may not need rb’s but I’d drop caddy to make room for Spann

5-8 200lbs 4.4 40 5.4 ypc 1350 yards and 22 td’s last year. Go watch his tape, You’ll agree. We don’t need both Carnell and Earnest..

  18. BigMacAttack Says:

HGO, thanks buddy, i appreciate the compliment. I do believe I am one of the few fans last year that predicted 10-6 for the Bucs, so I’m not a complete idiot like some. Smelling has had had Hammy problems and missed a couple games in each of the last 2 seasons. His rushing numbers are marginal with his production dropping dramatically from 09′ to 10′. He is okay but not great and the guy is almost 30 years old. Why not keep Earnest Graham. Smelling is a waste of money and a roster spot. Let’s see what the new kid has for us and who Dominick grabs as an undrafted free agent as well. Don’t need leftovers, and if you think I’m ignorant for not liking Smelling, more power to you. Do a little research before you run off at the mouth, but I am using memory only at this point.

  19. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

Earnest Graham is 31, smart guy. So how does that make Snelling unapproachable at 27?? He won’t be 28 until late December. He practically IS the Earnest Graham of 4 years ago. Way to have zero facts to back up your nonsense.

And how do you say someone is a waste of money, when you don’t know how much we would offer him?? Nice assumption. How do you know Caddy won’t ask for more than Snelling??

  20. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

Oh and I’m sure Jason Snelling who has spent 4 years with the Falcons won’t be able to give Rah any insight into the Falcons playcalling tendencies or offensive scheme. Yeah, he has no value in that sense.

    Sincerely,

    Sarcasm

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

Okay professor, I have to agree with you on the insight part of it, but what about the injuries and the lack of production, under 4 yds per carry. In 14 games he had 324 yds. C’mon, what about that? Although I concede that he has had a few very good games. We have Blount, Lumpkin, Lorig, Bradford, Graham, so where will he fit in and who goes? We’re already one heavy, and doubt they’re ready to cut Lorig just yet. IF it wasn’t for his injuries and epilepsy, I’d conced the point to you, but for now, I don’t want him, and I betcha the Bucs don’t make a play for him. But if I’m wrong, I’ll gravel in front of everybody. Is this a Conservative/Liberal thing?

  22. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

And how many carries did Snelling get in those 14 games, racking up only 324 yards? He’s had to split the back up role with Norwood and Mughelli at times. You really have no clue what you’re talking about.

I really don’t know what the conservative/liberal comment means. As if those two labels aren’t on the same bottle. ha

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

Okay, I’ll agree that he is decent, not great, but we still don’t need or have room for him. If you like him that much you can always become a Falcons’ fan. I looked it up, you forced me, something I hate doing. He had 87 carries for 324 yds and 3.7 yd avg. Okay, happy now. I wouldn’t call that exceptional, and he has hammy problems. Check it out.

  24. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

I like how you omit “ZERO GAMES STARTED”.

    Here are Cadillac’s numbers:

    9 games started, 125 attempts 437 yards, 3.5 ypc

Yeah, Cadillac is WAY BETTER than Snelling… lol

If we stayed away from every player who’s ever pulled a hamstring, you’d never fill a 53-man roster.

So what’s you next poorly formed argument??

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

I don’t think he’s that great and no way Dom signs him. Maybe you would but I bet you Dom doesn’t even think about it. This was Cadillac’s best season, based on his 3’rd down performance alone. He didn’t drop a pass all year. He caught the winning TD against the Rams and average almost 10 yds per carry on 3’rd down. You many agree with yourself but I think Dominick will agree with me. We’ll see what happens in the next week or so and if your right or wrong. If they sign Smelling I’ll take my licks in front of the gang. If not, stand by, cause I’ll remind you for sure.

  26. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

    Can you stay on subject?

I’m not guaranteeing that Dominik signs him and if he didn’t at least think about him, he’s not doing his job. I think Dominik would agree with me on that. Due diligence with all FA’s is part of the job. I was merely disagreeing with your stance that he is a chump. I wouldn’t mind signing him for the various reasons I mentioned before, but if they don’t, no sweat off my sack. And of course you want to make this into some bet between us, like you’re predicting we won’t sign him and I’m predicting we will. That’s like me betting you that we won’t get hit with a nuclear weapon tomorrow. Obviously the probability lies in your favor, but nice try. You are the guy still claiming to predicting the Bucs 10-6 record as if that makes you some expert. That’s like claiming you’re a NCAA College Basketball Analyst cause you won your bracket at work…. Grow up, buddy.

  27. BigMacAttack Says:

Yeah, you’re right. I agree with most all of your posts anyway. I was just being a dick, I guess because I love Caddy and Hate the Falcons almost as much as the Saints. Snelling has had some good games, I concede. Remember when you were Fire Greg Olson, I was with you. And we he started doing much better and you changed to Hire, I was right there with you again. I actually played Basketball in college. Funny you mentioned that. LOL good one.
