Hating On Matty Ice

July 24th, 2011

Bucs fans grind their teeth at night more over the constant din coming from the four-letter about the great Matty Ice than they do about the Bucs playing a home game in London.

Matty Ice is a darling of the Bristol crowd, and Bucs fans just want to thrown their pints of beer at the TV whenever they hear praise for Matty Ice.

Well, it seems Bucs fans anger has been felt all the way up in Canada. Recently, Pat Yasinskas of ESPN fielded a question from someone in Hamilton who seemed outraged that Matty Ice is slurped so much by the four-letter and Josh Freeman isn’t.

Robert (Hamilton)

Why is Josh Freeman not considered better than Matt Ryan? His stats were just as good, he’s three years younger, and his reeivers are not as experienced.

Pat Yasinskas

Who’s saying he’s not better? I think you can make a case that Freeman has upside to be better than Ryan. But I also think it’s a little too early to categorically say he’s better than Ryan. They’re both pretty darn good.

Both are good quarterbacks, let’s make that quite clear. However, Matty Ice didn’t exactly light up the Bucs last year and Matty Ice’s touchdown-to-interception ratio wasn’t close to Freeman’s.

Is Matty Ice good? Yup. But so too is Freeman.

I’d rather have Freeman. In fact I’d take him over any NFL QB given his age, physical skills, leadership, work ethic and upside.
    IMO we struck gold.

In a division with all kinds of talent at the position, I’ll take Josh Freeman hands down.

  2. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

Freeman and Ryan are gonna produce a lot of exciting duels for years to come. Can’t believe the NFL didn’t put one of these matchups on primetime this season.

  3. Macabee Says:

I don’t hate Matty Ice, I just want the Bucs to win. He has won the NFC championship and deserves credit and recognition for what he’s accomplished. Freeman is starting to get the respect and prime time exposure that he deserves from his performance last year. Who is better? The best way to answer this question is to ask it in a different way. If Matty Ice and Josh Freeman were in a hypothetical 1st round draft and it was your pick, who would you choose?

  4. Captain Stagger Says:

    I hate Matty Ice…..yeah I said it!

  5. FreemanBomb5 Says:

I hate Matty Lice more than you do! I hate his high pitched girly screams, and I really hate hearing he is a young Peyton Manning… Matty doesn’t have the arm to throw deep balls in the wind and he isn’t as athletic as Freeman. Josh Freeman would easily be a top 5 pick if the NFL had an actual fantasy draft.

  6. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

    @Macabee,

Uhh, did you see an NFL season that we all missed??

When did Matt Ryan win the NFC Championship?? I don’t recall him winning a playoff game, much less playing in a Super Bowl…

    Tighten your game up player.

  7. Jamie Says:

Remember back after Matt Ryan’s rookie season, when Yasinskas compared him to Peyton Manning? >_>

That said, there’s one thing Matt Ryan has done that Freeman hasn’t, and that’s the playoffs. Of course, Freeman should remedy that this year. Then maybe the four letter won’t call him the next Manning. They’ll call him the first Josh Freeman. That’s my hope.

  8. Macabee Says:

HGO, You’re right. No more Sunday morning martinis for me. I meant NFC south division championship.

  9. mpmalloy Says:

    Dear Joe,
I submit that you should consider, now and in perpetuity,
the nickname “Matty Lice”, to be used in all future references to Matt Ryan.

I like it myself and I’d be flattered if Joe were to use it also.

    Sincerely,
    mpmalloy

  10. Oahubuc Says:

    Second Matty Lice

  11. BigMacAttack Says:

Yeah I’m with you guys, count me in on some of the hating too. Lice & Co. got their comeuppance last season from the Packers. Lice is decent, but he’s only like 6′-2″ and a little frail. Freeman is a 6′-6″ Adonis, that is driven. I wouldn’t trade Freeman for Lice, Brees & Roddy White together. My hate is for all NFC South opponents, the entire NFC, & well the entire AFC as well. If you’re not a Buc, I hate you……. and your fans, especially Whodat Fans, they suck the most.

I’m stoked! We may be only days away. Finally. Let’s kick some Butts!!!

  12. BigMacAttack Says:

I may just drive to the CITS now and tailgate in the parking lot for the next 2 weeks until the first preseason game. I hope it’s a home game or I may run out of beer.

  13. Mauha Deeb Says:

    Interesting stat of the day:
Josh Freeman threw only 3 picks after week five. All against the Falcons. Two from Brent Grimes alone. He was 20TD/3int over that span. Sans the two Falcons games, he was 17TD/0ints after week 5.
If we find a way to remove Grimes from the game, we can easily beat this team.

  14. Dan Says:

i still dont believe at least one of them really was one

  15. RustyRhino Says:

Before we send Ryan or Freeman bronze cast for Canton can they play at least 4 seasons. Come on, we build them up before they have really done anything. When did slinging Sammy Baugh get talked about being enshrined? After his first three seasons…

  16. MTM Says:

The NFL and ESPN are dying to make Matty the next Tom Brady. And it’s hard to listen to. Freeman will surpass Matty this year and ESPN will still hype Matty.

  17. Thomas "the Truth" 2.2 Says:

Hate him all u want, he is 4-0 against this team since rah rah starting leading the cheers. You should respect him even more so now with julio “the show” jones opposite roddy white.

  18. Nnamdi Asomugha Says:

    @Thomas “the Truth” 2.2

Can you please just shut up? All you do is look SOLELY at Raheem’s W-L record. Nothing else. Both contests against ATL last year were decided in the last seconds and both of them had blown questionable calls at the end.

  19. Pete Dutcher Says:

    I hate the Falcons.

I thought for sure Ryan would be a bust. He still might end up as one down the road.

But at this point in time, he is better than Freeman. Why? Playoffs.

After this year that might change, but until it does, that’s what counts.

  20. Dan Says:

    playoffs?! playoffs?!

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

When I saw that picture of Matty and his puny little arms, I thought of Barrett Ruud, but I think Matt has him beat.

  22. Snook Says:

I look at it this way… if Matt Ryan was so great, his team wouldn’t have finished LAST in explosive plays (plays over 20 yards) last season. With all of the “pro bowlers” on offense that they have, I think that’s pretty pathetic.

  23. Snook Says:

And I still haven’t figured out ESPN’s fascination with Ryan. I honestly think its purely because he’s built similarly to Tom Brady. And we all know how much ESPN loves Tom Brady.

But Matt Ryan is no Tom Brady. Not even close.

  24. HolyBuc Says:

As a lifelong Bucs fan I still have to pinch myself when it comes to Freeman. We now have a franchise QB which means we will having meaningful games every December for years to come. That will translate into multiple shots at Super Bowl titles.

  25. McBuc Says:

Ryan may have more playoffs under his belt, but he has won the same number of them as Freeman. You cannot take much away from the guy, he is good. Pete, if he has not busted yet, what makes you think he is going to? All this JH talk is premature as well, Jones may not make it in the NFL…too soon to tell. I love how Tom 2.2 says the jury is still out on Williams, but he already thinks Jones is the man. How about some love for the team you are a nonfan of. Again, Tom 2.2 is a fool.

  26. Nate Says:

No hate on Matty ice.. Hes just no josh freeman! lol so its good to be a bucs fan inmo.. now if we can just sell out games….

  27. BOb Says:

good question. yo joe , how bout a post on the new (?) rules about blackout requirements. did they get changed? i know there were discussions about changing the set up there. would be nice to not have to worry about something like that but unfortunately we do.

  28. Patrick Says:

Seriously, I can’t stand the name “Matty Ice”.

  29. Joe Says:

    BOb:

Joe’s reluctant to comment on the new CBA simply because Joe isn’t certain what the details of the soon-to-be agreement will be. Right now it’s just a guessing game.

  30. Patrick Says:

I heard somewhere where the roster’s are going to be cut down from 53 players to 46 players. And the number of practices with pads are being cut down to only 14 a season.

I’m glad the lockout is almost over, but I don’t really like the new CBA. We might have to cut some good players just because of this new 46 player roster cutdown.

  31. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

    @Macabee

LOL… No problem bud. It happens to the best of us. Hopefully those Sunday-tinis will be sipped to some glorious NFL football in the nearing weeks.

By the way, you’re an idiot if you don’t see why Ryan is considered a premier QB on the rise. He has probably the most textbook throwing motion outside of Manning in the league. I don’t like the Falcons anymore than you guys, but Matt Ryan is no joke. That being said, I’ll take 5 ALL DAY LONG, SUCKAS….

  32. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

that last part was directed at all the other comments, not Macabee…

  33. Mike McKay Says:

I’m really indifferent on “Matty Ice” Decent QB, but I’ll take Josh Freeman every day of the week and twice on Sundays. For me, to hate someone, they have to be a threat to us and with the weapons we have, even though they need a little polishing, I don’t care about a quarterback who is named after a beer I can buy with the pennies in my ash tray.
