Cornerbacks Now In The Forefront

March 29th, 2011

Where do the Bucs really stand on Myron Lewis?

Thirty days from the NFL draft, and now the Bucs are searching for a cornerback that prefers to keep his violence on the field.

The debate will rage for days how the Bucs should proceed in the secondary. NFL Draft guru Justin “The Commish” Pawlowski, of WDAE-AM 620, touched on the subject via his draft page at 620wdae.com. Joe suggests you click through and take a look.

Remember, as part of the stellar draft coverage on JoeBucsFan.com, The Commish already has broken down potential cornerbacks and their possible impact on the Bucs. Might be time to give it a second look.

Joe’s of the mind that a big part of the Bucs’ decision making comes down to their evaluations and expectations of Myron Lewis, who looked like a rookie last year, unlike many of his fellow Bucs rookies.

If the Bucs’ braintrust truly believes Lewis is the proverbial “next man up,” then don’t expect anything bold from the Bucs in the secondary in the aftermath of Aqib Talib’s Wild West shenanigans.

I could say that I think both Lewis and Biggers are starters in the NFL, and that Ronde has one good year left in him. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be looking at CB. In a division with Brees and Ryan, going up against Peyton Manning this year (if there’s a season), having one older vet and two young starters is not enough. If we had one old vet, one young top-notch vet and two young starters then we’d have a fairly deep secondary.

If Talib is suspended, even for 4 games, we lose all depth. Mack will have to play in dime packages (and he’s horrible). And that’s assuming there are no injuries. An injury to Barber, Lewis or Biggers while Talib is out would leave us with only two CBs in a division that uses significant 3 WR sets.

Now, I wouldn’t say go draft one in the first round. We have bigger needs elsewhere. What would be prudent would be to find a young vet just hitting free agency. Problem is he won’t be a starter, which will discourage him from signing with us, and there’s potential he won’t even be the nickel back. Well, unless we sign a guy good enough to start over Barber, move Barber to full-time nickle back and utilize Lewis and Biggers in dime packages and while Talib is “out”.

BamBam, you almost have me sold on this.

What you say makes sense…a lot of sense. I also agree that if they draft one, it should not be in the first round. If they did that, the guy would be a “must start” type of player. And then what happens if no charges are filed against Talib?

I do think Barber would be willing to step back for his replacement though.

Ras-i Dowling in the 2nd makes more sense than ever.

…and what sort of moron would want Asomugha right now ??

We don’t need any corners, remember?

  5. Buc N' A Says:

Sure Diary – Easy to say that now after Talib went Postal. Isn’t hind sight great, especially when you can try to use it to throw in people’s faces. You must not have gotten hugged enough as a kid. Even your site name is a bash on someone. You must really have some heavy insecurity issues. Here, I’ll throw you a bone. YES, we need to look at CB’s now. Asomugha would be a nice replacement IF he doesn’t break the bank. There, you feel better boo boo?

  6. Diary of a Wimpy Ruud Says:

Yeah, because who could have ever predicted Talib might go postal. Not like it’s ever happened before….

Oh … and break the bank? Newsflash: We have one of the lowest payrolls in the entire league right now. Who really gives a damn if he breaks the bank or not ? We have to spend the money somewhere just to get over the salary cap floor.

    What floor?

  8. RIBucBall Says:

Josh Wilson, FA 26yo had a very solid year with the Ravens, not a ball hawk, but very solid in coverage and a decent tackler. Good insurance policy and won’t break the bank.

    Kudos!

    Um.

Nnamdi Asomugha is available, isn’t he?

    Just sayin’.

DE is still a far bigger need. We probably still have two players capable of being starters at CB. We still have zero at DE.
