Cody Grimm, The Anti-Sabby

March 5th, 2011

"I hated Grimm."

Joe’s heard various people chatter about how Cody Grimm might not be starter material at safety.

Joe really wonders what sort of football those people are watching. Wasn’t it obvious that Grimm was an extremely savvy rookie and a guy who tackles well and brings his hat successfully? The Bucs could sure use a couple of Grimm types at linebacker.

Mark Dominik talked about Grimm’s high football IQ to Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune recently. Here’s a snippet:

“Even back in the (voluntary workouts) and again during training camp, you would have thought that he’d played safety in college and not linebacker,” Bucs general manager Mark Dominik said.

“He was just so comfortable back there and his awareness of field levels and angles – it’s just a special trait of his. He’s just got a real good feel for it and an ability to get into the right spots. And that’s what accelerated his transition.”

Joe wonders if Grimm’s talent at safety was so obvious back in OTAs, what was Sabby The Goat thinking all that time?  With Sean Jones around and Grimm’s savvy exposing Sabby The Goat’s horrendous angles, no wonder Sabby The Goat unleashed his fury at Raheem Morris.

Joe’s feeling grateful — again — that the Bucs sent Sabby The Goat packing.

In Cummings’ story, he references Grimm’s height at 6-1. If Grimm is anything more than 5-11, then Joe is a picture of fitness and every cheerleader’s dream.

Joe never understands why guys lie about their height at the NFL level. They’ve already made it. There’s nobody left to fool. You’d think it would be more impressive to use your real height and weight, whatever it may be.

Joe it is pretty silly of you to accuse Grimm of lying about his height. I’m sure he doesn’t go around telling reporters that he is 6’1″

While I agree that Grimm doesn’t appear to be anything more than 5’10” the reality is he measured in at 6’1″ 203lbs at the combine. Is the combine not suppose to be the most detailed and accurate pony show of them all? I’m sure Cummings is referring to the combine measurements, as they are suppose to be the most accurate.

  2. JDouble Says:

Just FYI….they round up to the nearest inch on the combine page. So for Grimm to listed at 6’1″, he must in fact be at least 6ft 1/2inch. Unless there is some great conspiracy to make Cody Grimm seem taller.

Cody is a capable in the box safety. The question is he a liability in pass coverage. That was the knock on John Lynch for his early and late career. Monte was able to scheme around Lynch’s strengths, I don’t think that Rah Rah is capable of doing that. With that said: the bucs in pass d are excellent at one corner, and excellent at the nickel, they are decent at the other safety but weak at the other corner – altogether their secondary is above average against the pass on passing downs but for having NO pass rush.

Cody is smart, like Lynch, has good instincts so over time I believe that he will improve into adequate in pass coverage. I would stick with a kid like this – he is just a football player. Actually, T JAck would be the Perfect compliment to Cody a VERY athletic free with some thump.

    Thomas,

Too bad Jackson is unable to put the bong down and worry about his job

  5. Tom Says:

For one, Grimm measured in at 5 10.7 at the combine. Why they didn’t update that on his nfl profile I don’t know.

Also, let’s not forget about the broken tibia and surgery he had that resulted. The tibia holds a lot of the body’s weight and if it isn’t perfect like it was before the injury his play/speed could suffer.

  6. MichiganBucsFan Says:

That says it all right there, Cody has football smarts. Its too bad he doesn’t have the prototypical frame and size cause he would be a monster of a safety if he did.

IMO it’s Sean Jones that needs replacing, he played capable enough, but I’d like to see a bigger play maker in his place. Thinking about it sure makes me miss T Jax…. sigh

  7. BamBamBuc Says:

Speaking of Safeties….. With Tanard Jackson being a question mark at best, the team will be relying on Grimm and Jones, with Asante and Lynch backing them up. After all the talk about signing Asomugha at CB, why is nobody talking about getting Eric Weddle at Safety??? He’s one of the best in the NFL, only 26 years old, could instantly step in to start at either Safety spot and would eliminate any need to rely on Tanard Jackson if he should return. The cap room will be available and much better spent on a Safety than a Cornerback.

With Ronde and Talib starting, and Biggers showing decent coverage skills (although needs to work on tackling better), Myron Lewis still needing more time to develop… Asomugha would be nice, but would take away developmental time from the young guys. Weddle IS a young guy that could be around for years to come and could be teamed up with Grimm to form a very young, instinctive Safety duo.

There are quite a few FA safeties that could help us. Jones is adequate.
Grimm is exactly the reason that the combine is waaay overrated. Grimm is an excellent Football player, with ok measureables. Sabby was a terrible football player with great measurables. Everyone keep that in mind as you start to adore Dontay Moch and others.
Turdnard is a waste. Another immature and stupid player, destined for imprisonment, like his buddy Jeremy Stevens. If you are counting on that idiot, you really need a reality check. He is yet another failed and wasted draft pick- courtesy of Lil Chucky and his croney- BS Allen. Will the purge never end?
I worry about Aqib Talib alot. Seems like we hear some immature episode from him every year. He is very talented. I hope he gets some emotional stability, and stays in the game. The waste if Turdnard is bad enough. Our secondary is only good if we keep the components on the field!!

    Joe here,

@JDouble – Anything to say about the guy’s link above with Grimm measuring 5-10 and change at the combine?

Joe’s basing his comments on standing next to Grimm.

  10. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Joe, you and tom are correct, the post physical combine height of grimm was 5’10. V tech listed him at 6’1 pre-combine. I am 6’1 and stood next to grimm at practice and he was a few inches shorter than me. Most of us were commenting about his small size. Little did we know then that he was so stout.

I agree t jax is done. Weddle is an animal. The glazers would never pay for him but i would love it if they did. Tim’s analysis about sabby is correct, great measurables, sorry joe but he was not too bright and not physical. Terrible combo.

My point about t jax meant to provide that he is the perfect compliment to a grimm but for his pot addiction – not that he should be counted on. T jax was not an obvious risk out of college like a mike williams or blount.

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I am 6′ and I was taller than Grimm when I stood next to him. That being said, I have no doubt he is a starting safety in this league. He is all over the field, and he is as sure of a tackler as we have on defense. As long as he stays healthy, that’s one position we don’t have to worry about.

  12. JDouble Says:

My point was the NFL.com combine page lists him as 6’1″ so when people and reporters refer to him as 6’1″ blame it on the NFL combine site for listing inaccurate info….not Grimm for lying. All he did was stand there and get measured.

  13. MichiganBucsFan Says:

I don’t think its fair to put Tanard in the same boat as Jeremy Stevens. What Tanard did was really stupid, and he wasted his golden opportunity and the talent he had. BUT, there is a big difference between smoking pot, and SELLING pot, especially when you make as much money as these guys.

  14. Macabee Says:

I lie about my measurements all the time! When I meet a dame in a bar, I tell her that I’m 5ft, 11 inches, but I reassure her that its not the 5ft that she should be concerned about. OK! OK! like Grimm, I’m lying, but lighten up guys, it’s what men with Napoleon complexes do. Besides, like myself, I think Grimm is a baller!

  15. Niko-The Optimist Says:

Thank you for that laughter I got seeing that picture of a goat and thinking of Sabby!

My only suggestion would be have a photoshop specialist put a 21 jersey on that goat. I may have fell on the floor then.

    Thank You!

  16. Niko-The Optimist Says:

    Michigan Bucs fan,
The image in our heads of the typical drug seller is a TV implanted one. A drug dealer is responsible for about 8% of a users first high. the other 92% of the time it comes from a family member or friend.

That whole image of a guy behind a fence going “Hey kid, wanna try this” is just how TV portrays it.

Truth is, a drug dealer is usually nothing more than a person who uses a large quanty of drugs daily and simply helps out his drug buddies by selling them some too.

Then dont get me started on the way police will set up a drug deal at a 7-11 that happens to be 790 yards from a school, and then you read in the paper that the guy was a drug dealer selling drugs to our children because he was caught selling drugs within a 1000 yards of a school.

Ok sorry, war on drugs gets me going sometimes. Jerremy stevens is no saint, but he is no drug dealer like you think he is.

  17. Capt. Troll killer Tim Says:

Turdnard was busted for smoking pot THREE TIMES in the NFL!!! Oh yeah, that’s Jeremy Stevens Stupid, Big time. To lose a multi million dollar job for pot!! Especially when you know the initial test are at the start of game- you gotta be kidding me!!! Turdnard is somewhere in the hood right now. Got his pants pulled down mid thigh. Skid marked boxes showing, smoking a hootie and flashing gang signs with his “crew”- proven he’s real! Once the money’s gone, so’s the crew! He’s an idiot, and will be in jail within 5 years.

Cody Grimm is 5’10” meybe. I’m about 6’4 3/4″. He was closer to my daughters height(5’9″). On top of that, he has a babyface that makes him look so young. Despite that- rhetoric a hit with great insticts and feel. The only problem with being on the small side, is being injured to often- the Bob Sanders syndrome. I think he’ll be fine,

He schemed around Blacks abilities last year. Black didn’t do so well, but that wasn’t Raheem’s fault.

  19. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @Capt.
Barber is on the small side as well. Different position, but still.

  20. JDouble Says:

Grimm isn’t even undersized. The best safeties in the game are 5’10” and 200-210lbs.

  21. Capt. Troll killer Tim Says:

I think Grimm can be a great safety. I said that already. He just looks small and young. It’s funny, but has nothing to do with is game. Which I’m excited about!! I was posting” the Grimm Reaper cometh” last spring! I am really excited about this guy!

But he still looks like a kid. Just saying. I wanna buy his Jersey! But mine will be about 4 sizes bigger than his- lol.
