Panthers Irked At Aqib Talib

November 15th, 2010

Seems as though the Panthers are outraged over a play late in the game when Aqib Talib flew in to stop Jimmy Clausen on his lunge to try to gain a first down on fourth-and-one.

The play ended the Panthers final drive and sealed the Bucs win, ending any hope of a Panthers rally.

The Panthers claim Talib drilled Clausen with a helmet-to-helmet hit that gave the rookie quarterback a concussion, so reports the Associated Press.

Receiver Steve Smith said Aqib Talib and Sean Jones “went head first into Jimmy.”

Replays showed Talib appeared to hit Clausen with a helmet-to-helmet hit. Smith then shoved Talib and was given a 15-yard penalty.

“Despite what people might think, actually I am a team player and I’ll do it again, and I’ll do it 10 out of 10 times, 100 out of 100 times,” Smith said of the penalty. “Guys going in there, he goes head first in there, so I’m going to follow.”

Joe thinks that the Panthers’ anger is rich. Where was this same outrage, this same concern for an NFL player, when thug Dante Wesley assaulted Clifton “Peanut” Smith, knocking him out cold on vicious, dirty blow to the head on a kickoff return that referees saw fit to throw Wesley out of the game on the spot?

Steve Smith, a dirty player known for thuggish behavior, sucker-punching his own teammate, Ken Lucas, in practice two years ago which resulted in a two-game suspension and lying to his own employer about how he broke his own arm, ought to keep his trap shut.

Anyone notice that Peanut Smith never fully recovered after Wesley’s battery? Peanut Smith was never the same player and it’s not difficult to connect the dots that the concussion he received on Wesley’s assault may very well have directly led to the end of his career?

Let’s just say had Wesley done that to a bystander on the sidewalk, he’d be doing time.

Even Rodney Harrison, who some suggest played beyond the boundaries of good taste, claimed Wesley’s hit on Smith “was one of the dirtiest, dumbest plays I’ve seen.”

Memo to the thin-skinned, short-minded Panthers: Shaddup!

When I watched the replay in slo-mo from the far side, it appears that Talib’s helmet hits Clausen squarely in his right shoulder pad. It may have glanced into Clausen’s helmet, but appears to be a small graze from that angle. It was a goal line stand and QB run. NO one was defenseless, the QB was fully upright trying to reach for the TD, and Talib made a play to stop forward motion and succeeded. I believe earlier in the game, Clausen went down on his back one time and his helmet hit the turf. On a QB sneak the QB usually dives low and forward in the opening either side of center. Clausen 100% put himself in jeopardy with his play and it would be hard to not hit him somewhere high in that situation.

  2. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Here’s another thought to the Panthers: Don’t run a QB sneak twice in a row down 15 with 10 seconds left. That’s a 4th down play on the goal line and Clausen was still moving his legs trying to get the first down. He may have grazed him with his helmet, but his intention was to make sure Clausen’s second and third effort didn’t result in a TD. I understand why Smith took exception (I would hope our WR’s would do the same for Freeman), but it was not a dirty hit and I certainly don’t blame Talib for trying to finish off the play.

  3. DreadedBuc Says:

Panthers continue to give me reasons to hate them even more than I do already. I don’t care what Steve Smith says, Aqib was trying to make a play. it’s unfortunate that Clausen ended up getting a concussion, but that was not Aqib’s intention (Assuming that is the play that caused it.). Steve’s intent was to hurt Aqib, and it was a dirty move, that is why he got flagged. By the way does anyone have a link to the the game on NFL.com? I never can find it NFL game rewind.

37 seconds into this video, look at Aqib’s hit on Clausen. If it doesn’t hit the right shoulder pad, I admit I’m wrong, but it looks like pad to me. And if that hit gave Clausen a concussion, he’s a wussy. He may have ill effects from a previous concussion from hits taken in prior games.

Sorry Carolgina Fans, but I stringently disagree with your asinine assumptions.

Joe did you have to censor my last comment? I thought I cleaned up the lingo. No problemo. I used you link on the highlights and 37 seconds into it shows the hit clearly IMO.

Joe didn’t censor anything, however… if you use certain words the post automatically goes to the trash bin without Joe’s knowledge.

Jimmy should learn to slide if he doesn’t want to get hit

  12. sensiblebuc Says:

What goes around comes around Carolina…dirty or not, intentional or not retribution was absolutely necessary after what happened last year.

I will NEVER forget the hit they put on Peanut. EVER. I’m a pretty chill dude but that play makes me want to punch through a wall!!! Not only did he effectively end Peanut’s career but it was just one more incident in the long line of physical beatings we’ve taken from the Panthers over the years.

    GOD I HATE THE PANTHERS!!!

  13. florida girl Says:

Lol…..sour grapes from the Panthers. Don’t give it more attention than it deserves. Focus on the sweep of the cats by a team starting 7 rookies….like I said – 8 + 8 baby!!! See you @ FedEx Field in Dec.

  14. Steve From Oregon Says:

Hawaiian Buc…I agree with you. If you don’t want your quarterback to take a hit, why send him on two QB sneeks in a row when there is no chance for you to win.

I don’t blame Carolina for trying to get some points, but I dont understand why they would complain that they put their QB in line to get hit.

10 times out of 10 times he going to have every member of the opposing team jumping at him.

  15. dean Says:

    pussy!

  16. Pruritis Ani Says:

Steven Smith is a moron.. I hate Carolina almost as much as I hate Atlanta and my neighbors to the east (NO). I think these players take their cue from their coach who is a scatological phenomenon himself. Can’t stand that guy.

  17. Joe Says:

I think these players take their cue from their coach who is a scatological phenomenon himself.

    Good point Pruritis Ani.

  18. Dew Says:

Like I said Joe, I was at the game and didn’t really see it. Sounds like it was a clean hit. Just hope Mr Enforcer doesn’t think otherwise. Something is very unfair with the way they are currently giving out punishment. Thanks.

  19. gotbbucs Says:

If that hit requires a fine from Executioner Goodell then I will have lost quite a bit of respect for the NFL. The play was still alive and he made the same exact hit that Sean Jones made a fraction of a second before.

  20. gitarlvr Says:

    @Pruritis Ani
    @Joe

Say what you will about John Fox but if he gets fired(he will)and the Bucs do decide to pick up a D coordinator to assist Raheem then Fox would be the PERFECT guy. He’s had the Panthers outplaying the Bucs at the Tampa2 defense for most of the decade.

  21. Nano107 Says:

What’s that noise? Oh that’s right is the Panthers crying !!!! Steve Smith has room to talk he even hits his teammates. Welcome to the NFL Jimmy I blame the coach they should have never ran that play!!! Oh by the way that for Peanut!!!

  23. Gatorbuc15 Says:

I hate the Panthers and this only makes me hate them more. Aqib’s hit was not dirty at all but apparently the feral cats must have thought they were playing flag football and didn’t expect anyone to try and tackle Clausen let alone dive into the pile. F-ing babies man.
If anything Sean Jones hit was worse than Aqib’s!

  24. CarolinaFan Says:

All of the talk about the Panthers shouldn’t have run two sneaks is nonsense. Thats like a wideout never run a route over the middle cause they might take a shot. I am sure some of you arent bias but most of you are just crazy. As far as the play wasn’t over yeah it was. His forward progress was stopped and TWO Bucs took shots at his head. Were they both helmet to helmet maybe maybe not but they took shots at his head PERIOD. Its not called for at all. Also for someone who said its sour grapes and how the Bucs swept no it wasn’t sour grapes. If Freeman took that hit you would be screaming murder. I dont congratulate your team on the sweep. You have been waiting since 2002 for it. Wow its been 8 years crazy how time flys. Just for the record you all know there would be a media frenzy if that happened to Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

  25. CarolinaFan Says:

Oh by the way I love the Bucs Fans and how they support there winning team. Wait didn’t that game get blacked out because of lack of attendance? Pathetic. The Panthers can lose all there games yet they still sell out because of LOYAL fans and the Bucs are in a playoff hunt having multiple games blacked out because of lack of attendance. Too bad no one in Tampa saw that win unless they streamed it LOL.

  26. BamBamBuc Says:

SWEET!!! When we finally get rid of the Buc Fan “Haters” Club, we get the bitter, amnesiac (don’t remember the hit on Peanut last year?) Panthers fans coming on board.

Don’t worry, Kitty Fan. Maybe your #1 overall selection in the draft next spring can come in and take out his “vengeance” next year….. Nah, not happening. Guess you’ll just have to crawl back in your mom’s basement and lick your wounds.

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Carolina Fan,

Really, the play was over. That’s interesting, since the referees hadn’t yet blown the whistle. Maybe not in North Carolina, but in the rest of America you play until you hear the whistle. I’m just going to take a stab at it and say that’s why there wasn’t a penalty on our team, because if the hit was a millisecond after the whistle it would have been a penalty. I’d be willing to bet your tobacco farm he got the concussion on a prior play and they are just using that as an excuse. Again, I don’t have a problem with Steve Smith sticking up for his QB, but that doesn’t mean he was right. And as for that happening to Josh Freeman, we don’t even run a QB sneak when the game IS within reach, and our QB doesn’t have the body of a punter.

  28. Gatorbuc15 Says:

    Well said Hawaiian Buc.

  29. CarolinaFan Says:

The whistle should have been blown. The officiating was horrible all game. The pass interference on Beason was bogus but that is another story. I am willing to take a stab at it that the hit on Clausen wasn’t called because it was at your empty home stadium. You also said Smith wasn’t right to do what he did. He just pushed Talib. He got off easy cause could easily mess him up if they fought. Also nice try Hawaiian boy trying to be stereotypical with the whole tobacco farm just cause it is north carolina. That would be like me saying florida is where old people go to die. Although that is mostly true I am sure. Also tell your fans to quiet crying about clifton smith. Was the hit clean no. Did the guy get fined and suspended yes. Its football players make stupid mistakes. Go ask Meriweather about that hit on Heap. Just enjoy the rest of your season knowing you will be the odd team out come playoff time. As far as someone else’s comments I will enjoy that number one overall pick and new head coach.

  30. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Why would the whistle blow if Clausen was still moving his legs trying to get in the end zone? Besides, I didn’t say he wasn’t right for pushing him (he did the exact same thing Talib did to Clausen by the way), I said he wasn’t right for thinking it was a cheap shot, because it wasn’t. If he gets fined, it will be because he hit him in the helmet, which he may or may not have done.

I’m proud of you that you got the whole North Carolina stereotypical thing. Just last night when I told your mom that same joke, she looked at me like I was crazy.

  31. bucfanjeff Says:

Carolina fans apparently like to take out their frustrations on a team that knows how to draft. Don’t hate us for drafting a real franchise QB.

  32. BigMacAttack Says:

I think I saw 3 Carolgina fans at the game. They travel well. Old people don’t come to Florida to die, they come here because they have money and can afford it. Dale Jr. is from Carolgina and why is Kelly, his sister, the only girl you see him with??? One of 2 things, he’s gay, or she is his______. OMG, I just blasphemed about their number one son. The funny thing to me is that this wuss Carolgina Fan completely ignores the Peanut hit from Wesley in his feeble argument. Maybe when he wakes up and rolls off his sister this morning she will fight the battle for him. I can’t believe they actually have computers in Carolgina… or electricity.

  34. ShortyBuc Says:

I live in Charlotte and they are finding every possible finger to point and blame for just being the worst coached team in NFL..I think they are just mad because we snapped the streak of them taking out a Bucs starter for the season…I laugh when they tell me they are suffering and their owner is cheap..I think the next few years of Talib and Freeman will have them pointing fingers no matter who coaches them

  35. CarolinaFan Says:

First off the whistle would blow if forward progress was stopped which it was since he was moving forward. Smith didn’t do the same thing as Talib did. Pushing someone and launching into there helmet are two completely different things. Of course I said something stereotypical to you cause you did they very same thing. You gotta work on that short term memory. Normally when you are a smart a** with someone you get the same in return though this time I will take the road less traveled and only talk football. I am not taking my frustration out on your team. They won that game clearly. They are in the playoff hunt. I don’t hate you for drafting Freeman I hope he leads you to where you want to go. I just wouldn’t call someone a Franchise Quarterback till they win Playoff games so you can hold off on that till it happens. I never ignored the hit on Clifton Smith. If you read what I wrote I said it was dirty he got fined and suspended. Thats all you can ask for. Get over it. All I want is a fine no suspension. I am sure he can handle writing a check. He wont got hungry from that.

  36. J.Spradling Says:

Excuse me, But why are you Kitty fans going out of your way to our beloved JOE BUCS fan and spew you lousy excuses for a hit that you know was a live play and Talib was doing his job!! That he does very well by the way, just ask Steve, anyway you guy’s had your hay day and now it’s OVER, so please unless you are going to stop acting like a LOSER go cry on your panties board

  37. BigMacAttack Says:

    Hey Carolina Dave,
why don’t you go polish your Lombardi trophy. Oh wait, sorry, you don’t have one, and probably never will. HAHA, Losers, go back to your own site, d-bags.

  38. CarolinaFan Says:

I stumbled on this site cause I was looking for more information about if there would be a fine or what. I respect the Bucs but have lost a lot that recently due to there fans. Also don’t talk about Panthers fans crying when your fan base still can’t get past the Clifton Smith hit. Just so you know there is a big difference between a hit on a special teams player and a starting QB. You should be thankful to us. Without that hit you might not have stumbled on a guy like Spurlock who is way better.

  39. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Hey genius, we had Spurlock before Clifton Smith, but nice try. Those 2 hits aren’t even comparable. We are all past it, but we haven’t forgotten, so don’t expect sympathy points from us. And trust me, Clauden is no starting QB. Us hurting him might be the best thing we ever did for you. But don’t worry, we were more than happy to help.

  40. CarolinaFan Says:

Sorry about Spurlock I am not a Bucs fan so I wasn’t sure when he joined the team. Why would I trust your bias opinion about Clausen? He is a rookie and played pretty well. I remember Josh Freeman throwing 5 INTS in a game against us so if he is the measure of a good QB then I am sure Clausen will be just fine. I wasn’t saying that as a smart comment but you guys think so highly of him and he was nothing special as a rookie which is the way it normally is. Clausen is a rookie and will struggle but he has been improving every game so I am not worried.

  41. BigMacAttack Says:

    Hey Carolina,
Nice try again, but Freeman only played a little more than half his rookie season. He was also 8-8 in his first 16 games if you want to look at it that way. Clausen isn’t bad, but he is not close to Freeman in size or skill in my opinion, but it is good you support him. John Fox has pretty much worn it out there and I think it is time for the Panthers to hire Bill Cowher. He has wanted the job for some time and it is time to shake it up there. I wonder if we can find common ground on something. I hate the Saints!!! Also don’t take the comments personally, we all talk trash to each other in here, and you being a Panthers’ fan just really sent an invitation. Good luck for the rest of your games, you got ATL twice and I hope you guys beat them. I was cheering for you when you almost beat the Saints and I will when you play them next time. So good luck bud, no hard feelings and come back anytime, especially if you beat either. Otherwise, we’ll see you next year and hope you hire Bill Cowher. Actually I don’t. LOL

  42. CarolinaFan Says:

I know Clausens record isn’t great right now but you gotta understand our offensive coordinator blows. I can tell you exactly what offensive play we will run by the formation so if I can do that a D coordinator can do it no problem which explains why we have the worst offense in the NFL. I am not making excuses cause at the end of the day you gotta make plays but the play calling gives us no chance to win. I am with you that the Panthers need to hire Bill Cowher though I would also take Gruden. Our coaches contract is up at the end of the year so it is expected we will have a new coach for next year. I understand the trash talking but da** it got personal quick. Its cool no hard feelings. Also yes I will take that common ground with you the saints suck. I can’t stand them. I hope we can put up a good fight against ATL for you but I can’t make any promises. Good luck with the rest of the year and represent for the NFC South.

  43. Eric S Says:

Apparently they don’t teach grammar up in North Carolina. Dreadful.

  44. CarolinaFan Says:

I applaud you. You put me and my poor grammar in its place. Now return to sucking someone’s dick and let the grown men talk. Dreadful

  45. Eric S Says:

Nice one CarolinaFan. You are pathetic. Your team sucks and they are a bunch of whiny bitches. It will be a long time before the Panthers win another Super Bowl. Oh I forgot. The Panthers have never won a Super Bowl. Go back to the hole that you crawled out of. And take an English class you hillbilly hick.

  46. CarolinaFan Says:

Every team has a down year. I am amazed how poor your memory is. The Bucs were in the same position as the Panthers a year ago. Enjoy the success because it is only a matter of time before it stops. Enough with the stereotypes. It just makes you look insecure. If only your father did the right thing and pulled out the world would be a much better place.

  47. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Looks like the NFL determined that was a legal hit, Carolina Fan. I’m so sorry, but you were wrong, as we were all telling you. So I guess it’s wasn’t called not because it was in our “empty” stadium, but because it was legal. Aloha!

  48. YourBitch Says:

LOL Joe assumes you are going after Panthers fans? 🙂

    Now play nice. — Joe

  49. CarolinaFan Says:

Just because there was no fine does not mean I was wrong. The league makes bad decisions daily. Goodell is the worst. The NFL would be a better place without him.
