Disruption Not Happening On D-Line

October 11th, 2010

Joe’s not trying to take a dump on the Bucs’ stunning 3-1 record, but the Bucs are having some very serious issues stopping the run and rushing the passer.

The “disruption” from the defensive linemen that Rahem Morris talked about all offseason and preseason was absent again Sunday in Cincinnati. And the Bucs have no pass rush when their front four is left on its own to make something happen.

The Bucs have four total sacks and rank 30th in the NFL against the run. Gerald McCoy has no tackles in the past two games. What a savior their playmaking secondary has been.

The Bengals’ Cedric Benson, who was NOT having a good season before Sunday, managed to jam 144 yards down the Bucs’ throats on just 23 carries and no big breakaway run.

Joe knows former Bucs defensive end Steve White will break down all things D-line in great detail on his blog this week, but it doesn’t take a super expert to see that the Bucs have a very long way to go in the trenches.

Time should make them better. Maybe. But for now the fixes will have to come through creativity from the defensive coordinator.

Totally agree Joe. Did Bennett get in the game? I never heard his name all day.

where is Kyle moore he was getting so much praise in my sarcastic voice

  3. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Agreed Joe, I can’t wait for Steve White’s breakdown of the Tampa D Line play.

Joe- you Hater!! , lol- just kidding! I watched the game again last night, and parts of it still again. I saw something we haven’t talked about. Our Linebackers are non existent on running plays!! They should be sealing gaps, and I don’t see them behind the line in time. It’s like they delay for pass coverage loooong after they should have read Run! And it’s all of them! I didn’t see a decent job of Run support from any of them. I know Raheem was taking away the pass yesterday- which was really smart- but once you see Run, you fill gaps! Our Lbs seemed to pause, to stay out of the play!! Our dt’s I thought overall held their own. The DE’s were inconsistent. But our Lb’s – either rushing the Qb or In run defense, were a Fail! Watch again and see if anyone slaw notices this. And by the way, Sabby again was constantly outta posistion- I hope Raheem beats him up again!!! Smart coaching to take away the pass! Their are too many screwed up human beings on the Bengals to work together successfully on a long Drive! That worked out to be true most of the game! Let’em drive- they’ll self destruct or turn the Ball over soon!! Lol true Buc ball- and it worked! We proved to be patient and opportunistic. Theyproved impatient and unable to hold it together- sweet

    @ Dew

He was in…he might have gotten a few pressures.

    Joe here,

Bennett got his share of snaps. He actually mis-tackled Cedric Benson in the backfield late on third down. That was the same play Sabby mis-tackled him and Benson dragged Sabby down the field.

As long as we keep winning,I could care less about total rushing yards allowed. This defensive line is very young and will only get better.I’m more concerned with our non- existing running game. But we’re 3 and 1 and all is good in Bucland.Yesterday was the most fun I’ve had in years watching the late comeback.Sure nice to have a real Quarterback.

Capt you are so right! I watched the game over and I just watched the d- line and lb’s. I didn’t follow the ball just kept my eyes fixed on the d-line. We are just getting pushed all over the place BUT just imagine when we get this fixed! Things are going to get better and better. Sabby has no clue! I have no idea what he was thinking on the TD pass to the TE.

All good points, but we all know Raheem and co. are addressing this issue. I’m with Capt. Tim on the linebacker play. I saw Quicny Black get in on some run plays, but that was about it. It just seems to be that we are soft at middle linebacker as far as the run is concerned. This problem has to be solved soon, especially before Baltimore, although I would think they will load up the box that day.

Bennett got in and, among other things, missed a tackle in the backfield that resulted in a large run.

Sabby made a couple of good (Barrett Ruud type) tackles a few yards down field. He was hanging on for dear life, but made the tackles. One he made on an all out blitz and if he missed it Benson would have went for 95yds. This was Sabby’s best game, even though he made a few mistakes. Sabby played with passion like he never has before, as if it finally meant something to him. It would be great if Sabby finally came around and earned that 2’nd round pick made of him. Sometimes things just click in peoples brains and they get it. I hope this is the case, and right now he’s our only real option. I do think the Bucs will be looking and trying FA safeties this week. Hopefully Jones and Faine aren’t too badly hurt. Zuttah is a natural at center and Jon Gruden knew this right off the bat when he drafted him. Let the Bashing begin. LOL.

    BigMacAttack:

How invisible was Ruud yesterday? Though Thom Brennaman rarely mentioned tacklers, Joe can’t remember Ruud’s name being mentioned once. Rarely saw the guy around the ball.

  13. Kevin Says:

I would like to say that I was WRONG. After the Pittsburg game, I questioned the “heart” of this young team. This team does have heart. Even if they had lost this game, the most casual fan had to appreciate the relentless effort of this group. Color me impressed!

  14. gotbbucs Says:

i’m with everybody else on here regarding ruud. he wont be getting a new contract from the bucs. i also wonder if now that we’re sitting at 3-1 maybe it’s time to think about trading for a decent de?

  15. jdouble Says:

Ruud Has got to go without a doubt, But I am also worried about geno hayes too. The guy has good skills but he is just so small. He gets over powered constantly. We need a safety a middle linebacker and a defensive end next year for sure. Then there’s the oline….

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

Actually thought Penn played really well yesterday. That was about it on the line. Our other usual great performer, Faine, was of course Injured!! Zuttah was decent as a backup. Line playing a Lil better, but still long way from good!!

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

With all the times Benson dragged Sabby down the field, I canthelp but feel he is miscast as ” The Goat”. He is really” the Plow”! Lmao

  18. BigMacAttack Says:

Yes Joe, but I was coining a phrase, because how many tackles has Ruud made while getting dragged down field. That is a “Ruud” tackle, nevertheless still a tackle, and probably a first down for the other guys.

Last year Sabby missed all of those type tackles. I think he actually had more tackles yesterday than the entire 09′ Season combined.
