Should Sabby Be Sweating?

Corey Lynch's play may give Sabby some anxious moments this weekend.

A bold statement was made tonight by the youngster from Fort Myers who played small school football both on the high school level and the collegiate level, though he played big time football at both spots.

Corey Lynch, despite his special teams play and his knack for blocking field goals, was still a bubble player this morning. It’s doubtful he’s a bubble guy any longer.

Lynch picked off two passes tonight, taking one to the house in the Bucs’ win over Houston to close the preseason. He also put some serious heat on Houston quarterbacks with solid blitzes.

So, let’s say the Bucs only choose to keep four safeties. There’s Sean Jones and Tanard Jackson, both starters. Then, arguments can be made for Cody Grimm and Lynch. Who does that leave out?

Sabby.

Now there’s not a sober person in the Tampa Bay area that would argue Sabby played solid football last year. He did not. But what may have dug a hole too deep for Sabby to climb out of was how he lashed out at Bucs coach Raheem Morris for not getting the starting job, claiming Morris rigged the competition.

Notice players who have kvetched like that have been shown their walking papers? (Ahem Kardashiah-Derrickward.)

Bucs general manager Mark Dominik has already shown he’s willing to eat the Glazers’ cash a contract by unloading dead weight.

With Lynch playing so well tonight in addition to his superb special teams play, might Sabby start looking for a decent real estate agent?

I know Sabby was putrid last season Joe, but IMO Sabby should be retained over Grimm. We cannot deny the fact that 1 year of starting experience in this league is a LOT better than no experience. And once Raheem took over the defense, Sabby was not as shabby in pass coverage. Also Sabby was a good Special teams player until last season.

I say retain Sabby, cut Grimm and may be sign him to practice squad. As bad as Sabby is, he makes a good backup.

  2. Capt.Tim Says:

Sabby still has the same problems he had coming out of college. He frequently misdiagnoses plays, and he takes bad angles to tackle. I like lynch and Grimms instincts, over Sabby’s raw talent without production. Meybe they keep 5 safeties.

Hit the road goat and don’t ya come back no more, no more, no more no more
Hit the road Sabby and don’t ya come back no more

    WHAT YOU SAY?

Hit the road goat and don’t ya come back no more, no more, no more no more
Hit the road Sabby and don’t ya come back no more

OH MORRIS OF MORRIS DON’T YA TREAT ME THIS WAY

  4. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Corey Lynch had Houston’s back-up bum Orlosky through the ball right to him .

Let’s not get carried away and think he’s ready to come in in a regular season game against Drew Brees.

  5. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Sabby sticks around for his ability to play special teams if nothing else. Let’s not forget he’s good on special teams , he has blocked punts in the past , etc.

  6. bucfanjeff Says:

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, try Sabby at CB.

  7. Jason Says:

BFJ, that’s a worse idea than Spurlock at QB

Sabby lacks instinct, discipline & execution. His ST play is replaceable, quite appropriately, by one Corey Lynch. I’m all for “football players” like Lynch & Grimm. Cutting the goat would go a long way towards washing the stink off from last season.

    Good point Jason.

  9. Radio Mushmouth Says:

One thing is for sure , sabby is not on the bubble .

The fact that he didn’t play at all in Sunday’s game leads me to believe one of two things:

    1. His job is already secure , he’s made the team and bucs wanted to evaluate roster spots still undecided.

    2. He’s already cut , and the Bucs did not play him , so they wouldn’t have to risk him making a great play and playing his way back onto the team.

    Thursday’s game….sorry.

  11. Not A Rocket Surgeon Says:

Sabby was held out last night due to the mild concussion.

It’s hard to say if he’s on the block as part of a package deal or he’ll be
    retained in some fashion.

There are a lot of youngins’ doing very good things in our secondary.

  12. Dr. Dave Says:

Nice to see the Lynch name carried on in Tampa.
Sad to see Sappy (No. 21) make one play per game then bounce around like Gramatica, pattin’ hisself on the back

  13. Matt Says:

Look, I’m no Sabby fan, but cutting him is stupid.

Why can’t we keep 5 safeties? Especially when two lowest on the depth charts (Lynch and Grimm) appear to be excellent special teams players?

  14. bucfanjeff Says:

@Jason – I said “try”. He’s going to make this team for depth most likely, I like Lynch (better than Grimm too) but the Texans game was nothing more than a partial college no name all-star game. CB is a LOT less complicated than safety – again, “try”. What does it hurt? Nothing.
(I said Spurlock at QB in reference to the implication he could be the emergency QB)

  15. lightningbuc Says:

Sabby needs to make sure his cell phone bill is paid, get an unlimited text plan, and make sure his phone is charged cuz the Grim Texter is gonna come callin’.

  16. El Guapo Says:

Corey is from Cape Coral, not Ft. Myers.

  17. Mr. Lucky Says:

While a part of me says to keep Sabby as a back-up the other BUSINESS part of me says – cut the prissy SOB. When a player calls out the HC and acts like a little girl it sets a bad example.

Sorry but players just DON’T suggest that the HC set them up and STAY on the team. It’s like leaving a rotten apple in a barrel with the good apples – eventually the stink spreads…

  18. tampa2 Says:

Firing the amateur coach would go alot further to wash the stink off last season. But I guess we are sewer bound again!
