Chucky Punished For Blasting High School Refs

September 15th, 2010

America’s most famous assistant high school football coach is off to a rough start with the local referees.

On Sept. 3, during the first quarter of the season-opening game for Carrollwood Day School in Tampa, assistant coach Jon Gruden incurred a 15-yard penalty for chewing out officials and Chucky was so tormented by the call that he abandoned his teenage roster and left the field for the remainder of the game.

“Whether or not it was his celebrity, I don’t know, but the officials made the call,” Carrollwood Day School athletic director Frank Mabry said Wednesday. “I was right there myself. In all honesty, he was upset with the officials and he did receive a sideline penalty and a warning, but it was definitely overblown.

“He was not ejected. He left the sidelines on his own volition and watched from the stands. [Gruden] has been absolutely awesome with our students and accommodating with our coaches. It’s a shame that people were saying that he was ejected and making a big deal out of that. That’s not what happened. He chose to remove himself from the situation.”

Mabry said he will not file a complaint with the West Coast Officials Association, which employs the referees that worked that game. “I have the highest respect for the officials, and this is not that kind of situation,” he said.

Former high school football official George Robertson, of Tampa, was at the game cheering on his son who played for the opposing team, Cambridge Christian School.

Robertson said Chucky continued to berate officials while watching from the stands, calling them “Forrest Gump” and questioning calls.

Joe thinks it’s very weak that Chucky chose to leave the field in the first quarter.

Perhaps the officials had a quick trigger for Chucky, but why would he not just stop talking and be there for his players?

It was a great opportunity to teach the kids some sportmanship, rather than running away — like Forrest Gump loved to do.

Classless and insensitive to his players. Nothing new here people! Just hope the media doesn’t pick this up, allowing the Lil dick tater to futher embarrass the Tampa Bay Area! Jeez, I wish this guy would move already!!! WE FIRED YOU!! MOVE ON!! Guess he will never tire of humiliating the good people of Tampa!! Right , Eric? Now that we have a REAL coach, time for for this pretender ta hit da bricks! I’m sure Patrick agrees whole heartfelt!! Tampa never could stomach that damn Lil midget. Good riddance! Righteous words, right on, Tampa2!!!

  2. Capt.Tim Says:

Just like at that picture of him!! Out. Of. Control!!! That picture just screams ” I’m a Lil Homo, look at my bully face!” just makes ya sick !

  3. Jonny Says:

Chucky should lose some of that temper. Honestly, no one outside of Tampa gives a **** about this news, but once he returns to the NFL as a head coach that Hitler attitude of his won’t help him.

  4. Gatorbuc15 Says:

Gruden is just an a$$. And sometimes he can be a real idiot. Like this situation for example. He should not have left the field. That was stupid and immature of him to do.
And if he’s really gonna insult the refs, can’t he come up with something more insulting than Forrest Gump? That’s pretty weak IMO.

Gruden’s like a box of chocolate’s. You never know what your gonna get.

  5. MTM Says:

    The D-Bag strikes again.

  6. Joe Says:

Guess he will never tire of humiliating the good people of Tampa!!

You mean like the time he hoisted a Lombardi Trophy aloft in victory after leading the Bucs to a Super Bowl?

    What humiliation!

  7. oar Says:

Capt Tim, You sure it’s not sea sickness? Or scurvy again? Calm down! Guess what? You said it, “he’s gone!” Please, get over him!

  8. BigMacAttack Says:

    Hey Chucky,
    Welcome to our World, Brother.

My boys played High School Ball and the Refs drove me insaneo. With no instant replay, it sucks. And once they get it in for you, Forgetaboutit, you’re toast.

Hahaha, Chucky is getting his comeuppance in Florida High School Sports.

How does it feel to be a “NOBODY”???

  9. BigMacAttack Says:

You can always pay them off….

  10. Jbyrd Says:

Good call Joe…nobody in Tampa hated Chucky that night. How soon we forget…

  11. goodfellajay Says:

well he will have a job next year…in the nfl…

  12. bucfanjeff Says:

    Who won?

  13. McBuc Says:

I for one have NEVER hated Chucky! I still like him on Monday Night Football. The guy is pure entertainment, and he was a good coach that brought my Bucs to the big game. I also like Morris and think he going to grow into a good coach as well, and I hope he also brings my Bucs to the Super Bowl. You can like both of them! In fact, Dungy is awsome as well!

  14. oar Says:

bucfanjeff, Just googled the Carrollwod Day game for Sept 3 and looks like they won 38-15. Gruden’s son was 8 for 13, 278 yds, 5 tds, 0 ints and rushed 7 times for 45 yds. Not sure what got under his skin? Except, he like myself and others, find most refs to be….well like Gumps!

  15. gotbbucs Says:

yea, sideline penalties do happen, but i dont know of many coaches that abandon thier team and head up into the stands afterward.

  16. oar Says:

    gotbbucs,
Apparently, volunteer assistant o-line high school coaches do.

  17. Jdouble Says:

So he wasn’t ejected…rather he quit on a bunch of highschool kids mid game?

    Nice.

  18. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @oar
When you looked that score up, did it happen to mention Grudens son’s name?

With stats like that, I may want to follow the kid in college, lol.

  19. Pete Dutcher Says:

As to his behavior, it was certainly out of line. It was also disrespectful to those Christian School kids. They never would have treated HIM like that.

  20. Jdouble Says:

Would it have been less disrespectful if they were public school kids instead of christian school kids?

  21. oar Says:

    Pete,
Duece Gruden, if you were being serious about his son’s name? They play both defense and offense. He plays safety also and had 1 int and 5 tackles.
As for your “lol” about him in college, it is what it is. High school stats that are pretty good, too me.

  22. Joe Says:

Here’s the thing about high school referees. They are — altogether now — high school referees. They are every bit the amateurs as the kids who play in the games.

Joe believes they get paid $45 a game.

Just as we don’t expect high school players to make plays that SEC or Big Ten players would make, much less the NFL, nor should we expect that from a handful of guys who just got out of the office — in Class 1A football no less — to be as astute as officials on the upper reaches of the next level.

High school officials also will not put up with any kind of crap, mainly because there are so many Chucky wannabes out there. Just a hunch, it’s likely a combination of egos: A high school ref who wasn’t going to tolerate Chucky and Chucky thinking he could railroad a guy and intimidate him.

  23. oar Says:

We don’t even know the whole story. Maybe they weren’t calling cheap shots on his son? it is his son. How many of you wouldn’t get fired up or concerned about thier kids games? Sounds to me like, he didn’t want to get the team anymore penalties and went into the stands to voice his opinions. It’s not like he’s calling their plays. Again, we don’t know but only the Joe’s version/story.

  24. AtlBucsFan Says:

So he removed a disruptive presence from the sidelines. Have we never seen ASSISTANT coaches watch from the top of stands before? He let the HC do his job without being a distraction to the team (or his son for that matter).

  25. gotbbucs Says:

if he’s only a volunteer o-line coach then what the hell is he doing chirping at the refs? seriously? what a douche bag. i would hate to be that head coach and have that clown roaming the sidelines running his mouth.

  26. Pete Says:

I doesn’t seem like Gruden has great people skills, but no, this is not a big deal. However, yelling from the stands probably isn’t a good idea given his celebrity.

  27. Pete Says:

hey the Bucs won Sunday!! I’d rather talk about that!

  28. BigMacAttack Says:

Does any of this come as a surprise???

    Really?

  29. Capt.Tim Says:

When I first discovered this post, about 6 months, I couldn’t believe how much pro Gruden garbage I had to listen to! The slow squad did nothing bit say how stupid the Glazers were for firing Gruden, how great he was, and how we would never win again. I personally though Gruden was a great x and o guy, but needed to be fired because he couldn’t draft or coach young players. But I knew Dungy would never win the SuperBowl, I loved Gruden when we won ours! Buuuuut, listening to the slow squad trash my Bucs over and over? That wasn’t gonna work. After months of cannon fire, and accusing them of watching “Gruden gone wild” tapes. The slow squad has FINALLY shut up about Gruden, and using him as a way to degrade the current regime. I consider it a job well down!! And most importantly, the truth is proving out. The team had been ran completely out of talent! The new guys are having to rebuild after 6 years of “the Bandaid method!”. So now, having battled multiple entrenched haters into silence, I still vigilantly patrol the sea, just malking sure that dead issue stays dead! He’s fired- move on!

  30. tampa2 Says:

    Tugboat Timmie says;
” So now, having battled multiple entrenched haters into silence, I still vigilantly patrol the sea, just malking sure that dead issue stays dead! He’s fired- move on!”
As he captains his lil bathtub tugboat around and around the tub! As ususal, some reporter seen a chance to make a big story out of nothing and Glazerites such as tugboat Timmie seized the chance to go off on Gruden.
Well Timmie, as you’re “malking” your dead issue in your bathtub, please remember that it wasn’t Gruden’s tight fisted ways that caused him to have to bring in old and troubled talent on the cheap after the Super Bowl. It was these Glazer brats that squeezed every penny out of the Bucs that did that. And Gruden still won with those has-beens!
Lets see how far this “Gump” of a coach gets ya! Having to come back to beat a team like the hapless Browns doesn’t make a very good NFL resume. Nor does the yards given up by our violent defense! Chucky makes news wherever he goes. When the Glazers finally realize their mistake, Raheem the dream will be nothing but a bad memory when he’s finally put out to pasture.

  31. McBuc Says:

Tampa2…at least you stopped misquoting the yardage…You also may want to learn about the Tampa 2 Defense, and the “bend but do not break” thing. All comebacks in the NFL look good on a resume, especially since the W is all that is seen. The score board is more important than the yards, ask any NFL coach and they will say the same thing.

Now, I agree that if this was not Gruden we would not have heard about it, but if it was not Gruden we would not know who the assistant head coach of the school was either. Gruden is a great coach, but he is no longer here. Your problem with the Capt. is not his hate for Gruden, but his love of the Bucs. He has not anointed Morris a savior, he has just said give the guy the chance other NFL coaches have received. You sir are the worst of the worst when it comes to Bucs fans. Go root for Carolina.

  32. McBuc Says:

OK Tampa 2…to be fair, YPG is important, mostly because it is hard to score on teams that do not give up yards, but it is not the say all and be all after one game. The Bucs were number 20 on the list this week for YPG. By your logic there are twelve worse teams. Not to mention last year NE and Houston had an average of over 400 YPG on D, so I guess they sucked. On Sunday some of those teams that had a worse defense YPG than Tampa included…
    Houston
    New England
    Detroit
    KC
    Washington
    STL
    Bengals
    Panthers
    Jags
    Cults
    Atlanta
    and Oakland

  33. lightningbuc Says:

While I’m sure the guy can add some great coaching knowledge and he wants to be able to interact with his son, why would the school even put themselves in this predicament. Every game is probably a three ring circus with people wanting to get pictures, autographs, etc. Instead of being about and focused on the kids, all attention is going to be on the volunteer offensive line assistant coach.

  34. McBuc Says:

Private schools can recruit…It is a great move to get the exposer. Now, I do not think any parent should be yelling from the stands, and he should understand what Joe said above about the status of the refs. It would be better if he set a great sportman example.

  35. Capt.Tim Says:

MacBuc, not only are you a genius, you are also the MAN!!! But let’s not be too hard on Tampa2. The good Capt is very good a catching Catfish( and other bottom feeders!). If you chum the water just right, instinct forces a bite out of them. Tampa2 ‘s hand was shaking when he responded, but he had ta bite on the Gruden bait! He can’t help himself. It’s like hater aphrodisiac!

  36. DA Says:

He probably left because he realized he was a distraction. I’m sure he’s just an “assistant” who helps out the team, I really doubt he’s a coordinator or anything like that. So saying he abandoned the team is pretty ridiculous. But this is a website comment board, so the intelligence from most is going to be extremely limited.

  37. Reality Says:

How many superbowls have you won with Gruden? How many have you won without him? Floridians are so dumb.

  38. What?? Says:

You Tampa locals are such morons…really. You cry when you lose and then cry when you win. You couldn’t wait to get rid of Dungy then Gruden wins the superbowl and you still give him crap. You deserve nothing in terms of sports championships. Tampa Bay is one of the best teams in baseball and none of you losers can show up to sell out a game. It’s probably because you’re all home commenting on what coach Gruden is doing. What a sess pool. Do you idiots have any idea the amount of football knowledge these kids will recieve with him helping out? You can’t pay for that stuff you dopes.

  39. Diego Says:

Chucky is just a bit high strung.
