Gerald McCoy Talks Money, Sapp

August 1st, 2010

Poised. Cool. Humble.

Gerald McCoy didn’t sound like a rookie in front of the microphone when he greeted the media yesterday evening with the ink barely dry on his massive contract.

Joe recommends you watch the video at Buccaneers.com.

Among other things, McCoy was asked whether he was a changed man now that he’s got $35 million or so guaranteed, ‘Do you stay motivated the same way now that the money is there?’

“Even more. The money, it’s there. But like I tell my family, ‘The money is for you guys.’ I worked hard to take care of my family. My goal is to be the best football player I can be. I want to be in the Hall of Fame. I want to be Pro Bowl. I want to be known as one of the best ever,” McCoy said. “That’s what I want to do. And by doing that, the money will come, and I will share it with your family. You know, the money is the money. I’m not saying it’s not great. You know, nobody’s going to say it’s not great. But I’m a football player. And that’s what I want to do.”

McCoy also confirmed his June practice session with Warren Sapp back, a major happening that was only reported by JoeBucsFan.com and inexplicably kept quiet by the Bucs.

“Everything [Sapp] showed he me, I just went and worked on it. Worked on it, and worked on it and I’m going to try and perfect,” McCoy said. “He showed me a lot of minor things. He said he can’t show me in one summer. …He says it’s going to take time.”

We stuck to “basics.” And Sapp advised ” you gotta go out there with no fear and you gotta go out there with a plan.”

Joe’s quite impressed by McCoy. But that’s all meaningless in about eight weeks, if he looks overmatched.

I am impressed with him as well Joe. Price and him will hopefully form the tandem we have been waiting so long for.

I am so excited to see what they can do.

Quick, Eric come in and say something to bring us all back down before our happiness gets out of hand!

Nah, I have nuttin bad to say about this young man. He seems like a kid that has his head screwed on straight, unlike so many others nowadays.

And that respect he shows Sapp is great. I recall Warren stating young players on the raiders were not inclined to listen to him.

So far, i am liking Benn, Price, and McCoy. Haven’t detected any diva behavior yet.

Now if the Rays can just hold onto this lead………………a good Sunday it shall be.

Eric will come. He will say that we are are worse than last year. He’ll say we are only gonna win 0-3 games. He might be right. I think he’s wrong. I think this team is going be a lot better. I think we have drafted young players with good work ethics. I think they are going to be better than we had. I believe that because I’m a Buc fan. And I believe I’m right!

I have tremendous respect for NFL players, especially this time of year. For most of em they are one day away from a one way ticket to palookaville. Plus they are out there busting their asses trying to make it.

Now Bucs Ownership/Management, there is a different story.

Or not, geez Eric, you trying ta get on the koolaide Krewe! Next you’ll be saying Raheem is doing a good job!

Not until they remove my cold dead hands from my laptop…………………

Sure would have been nice to have this guy in the fold.

So McCoy said money doesn’t matter to him ??

No wonder the Bucs drafted him !!!

    (joking)

  9. Jesse Says:

He truly does carry himself like a professional. I cant WAIT to see him on the field.

And btw, theres no way possible that we can go worse than 3-13. Just look at our team. We straight out have more talent on the field, plus Bates is gone. Our team was MUCH improved from the time Raheem began calling Defensive plays, and he’s had an offseason to gather up the players he wants on his Defense, and they actually had time to work on it. Our Defense can’t possibly be worse, and with real weapons and just invaluable experience, our Offence is looking better too. The only REAL concern I have on this team is still the RB position. I’d be surprised to see us draft any other position than RB in the first round of the 2011 draft.

You mean the same Bucs ownersip/management that just invested more than $100 million iin the team this Saturday? Or, do you mean the ownership/management that took the three guys you just said you liked?

    JImbuc,

Signing draft choices is nothing to applaud, every team does it. Hugh Culverhouse did it. If a team got to the point of not signing draft choices the league might have to get involved.

The fact that I like the new players doesn’t mean i think management is doing right by them or the team by relying on them to have an immediate impact and start. And the fact that I like them has no relationship as to whether they can play a lick in this league. And the fact that Rah is their head coach has no bearing on me suporting them and hoping they do well.

Signing Penn and McCoy doesn’t impreess me. Wins would. Making a run at the Division Title would. Another 3-13 camapaign won’t!

  12. Jesse Says:

I cant see us getting any less than 5 wins this year.

  13. JimBuc Says:

Eric — blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I was only joking with you. I know what your response is before you give it.

By the way, it was the managment of the team that slected those guys you like including Price, most people here calling the Price pick a stupid move. And, last I checked, no games yet so the current Bucs are 0-0. Nothing to win or lose yet.

  14. Capt.Tim Says:

Tough season to call! If Freeman gets hurt, we might not win a game. Alot of places where an injury would kill us! Buuut, if we can stay healthy, and sign some more depth, we could be competitive in all the games! It comes down to how good Freeman plays, and how much the defense has improved. 8-8 is a possibility! I chose to remain optimistic!
