Getting Physical

June 22nd, 2010

One of the reasons the Bucs loaded up on wide receivers in the draft — other than the fact it was clearly the weakest link of the team — was that the Bucs wanted to get some physicality on the field.

Sure, blocking icon Michael Clayton is physical, but there’s that nasty little issue about, you know, catching the ball.

When the Bucs picked up Illinois wide receiver Arrelious Benn, it seemed as though the Bucs may have gotten the guy they wanted. Benn, if one was to read between the lines, was to catch short passes and turn them into long gains due to his ability with YAC.

Benn made a play this morning, per Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times, though his Twitter feed, that showed Benn already has some veteran physical moves.

Arrelious Benn gets vertical w/40 yard TD from Josh Freeman in 7 on 7. Used body to shield off CB Elbert Mack.

Bingo: Using the body as a shield to get position on the ball. The fact a rookie wide receiver in his first minicamp is doing this against a guy with a couple of years of NFL experience under his belt puts a smile on Joe’s face.

Is the Rookie good, or is he just going against one of the worst defenses in the NfL. 7 on 7 drills, Well at least that simulated our pass rush last year. That is if we placed a couple of big guys on their lying on their backs.

  2. Louie Says:

I’ll get excited when he does it against Talib.

  3. Snook Says:

Benn and Williams will be stars.

  4. Snook Says:

Even when good news comes out of camp, some people just can’t resist taking a dump on it.

  5. bucfanjeff Says:

I think Benn and Williams are more polished than the stereotypical label, rookie, would imply. Regardless of the W-L record, I think we show very good improvement this year.

  6. the_buc_realist Says:

We heard nothing but good news from last years camp and the whole season was a dump. But go ahead snook, put your money down on a winning season. We will be here, laughing

  7. Joe Says:

We heard nothing but good news from last years camp and the whole season was a dump.

Adam Schein — nor Pat Kirwan — didn’t drink the Kool-Aid.

Kirwan said from day one that the Jim Bates Experiment would be a total joke unless they got completely different personnel. How’d that turn out?

Schein claimed the Bucs would win four games. Of course, he was wrong.

  8. McBuc Says:

Good point Joe, we heard a lot of media people questioning the Bucs in the off season last year, from the QBs to the defense. Snook is right though, many Bus fans complaign no matter what. It is their right though. If we all agreed, these boards would be boring.

  9. Not a Rocket Surgeon Says:

Lol… if this team is on the upswing and they do win a few more games and are competitive in most… no lies, all the people pissing on the party will NOT be here. Guaranteed – Mr Anonymous party pooper (you know who you are…) 🙂

  10. Snook Says:

Who said anything about a winning season, realist?

I still see thr Bucs winning 3-6 games. There’s too many young players on this team that’ll face growing pains. But having young promising talent at WR is something we haven’t had in awhile.

I’m sorry that good news from a rookie pleases me. And I don’t know what Bucs news you were reading last year that was so positive.

Enjoy “laughing” at your favorite team this season.

  11. Not a Rocket Surgeon Says:

I seem to remember Gannon saying our practices were the suck last year… most reporting out of camp last year wasn’t any where near as positive that we’re hearing this year…

Some people are on other planets I guess… Takes all kinds.

  12. Snook Says:

    Realist:

Is there ANYTHING you’re excited about regarding the Bucs right now?

If not, find another team that you can root for and not be so miserable doing so.

And unless you can see the future, there’s no reason to take a dump on good news from a player that wasn’t even here last season.

  13. oar Says:

Why do people “take” dumps? I tend to “leave” mine! That is something I would not want to “take”, LOL!

  14. oar Says:

BTW it does sound good and positive, but Im waiting til the real pads go on and training camp/pre-season begins. Which, as Joe says, is right around the corner!

  15. lightningbuc Says:

    Snook,

I agree – some of us, including me, can be a bit too negative at times. But you said Benn and Williams will be stars. I, too, am excited about the young receivers, but don’t you think that may be a bit of a stretch this early on?

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

Yeah, LightningBuc, and some of us can be to optimistic sometimes, including me.
But can we agree on this? It’s nice to have some young players around here, to be excited about?

  17. JimBuc Says:

Love how so many line up to shoot down any positive story. Fans ’til the end!

  18. oar Says:

Hurry folks, step right up! It’s the Dump Shooter! 3 tries for a dollar! Shoot dumps on your team win a prize!

  19. Louie Says:

Sorry, the only thing that excites me is winning. I don’t care if the players are young or old.

  20. Snook Says:

“I don’t care if the players are young or old.”

Yeah, turning over your roster every other year is awesome. Watching re-treads in the twilight of their career is so exciting.

  21. Snook Says:

lightningbuc… yeah, its a stretch this early on. That’s just June football cabin-fever on my part. I do think Williams will be a star if he can keep his head on straight. And I think Benn will be a solid player after a year or two.

  22. RustyRhino Says:

Whining is all that matters!! we are an “its all about me” world! Sad to say but what can we do?

I like it that we are putting good Young Hungry players on both sides of the field, this to me will instill the Violent Aggressive Physical team we all want.

  23. Eric Says:

    Has the dynasty started yet?

What about the 13-3 season where Raheem gets upset cause they lose in the first round?

    Just checkin………..

  24. JimBuc Says:

Eric and Louie, you guys are great fans!

  25. jarrett Says:

Can we stop saying that people are not fans because they are negative. Jimbuc if someone goes to a football team website every day to get news on their football team in june nontheless they are fans in my book. Look i love the last two drafts i really think freeman will be a star. Just because i think jon gruden is more qualified to run his own offense than olson is and just because i think he is a more qualified coach than raheem does not make me a non fan.

  26. JimBuc Says:

jarrett — if every single item one posts is negative you are more a fan of yourself and your own beliefs than the team. Gruden is gone, everyone should get over it, move on, etc. If you bashes the Bucs repeatedly because you are angry about Gruden, you have an axe to grind. Tough to reconcile the two: having an axe to grind and being a fan.

  27. Eric Says:

Where was all that “don’t be negative” when the town was stringing Chucky up and running him out of town?

And Jimbuc, who are you to say who is a “fan” of the team?

  28. BigMacAttack Says:

I was huge Gruden fan, still am, but I am a Raheem fan now too. I wasn’t a fan of Rah until he fired Bates, because I wanted Bates fired after the Giants’ game. Steve White helped steer me into Rah’s corner with much of his insight. I think Rah will prove to be a creative and competent Defensive Coordinator, whic his half the battle. If Greg Olson manages to improve and stand on his own two feet, that is the other half. Success should follow.

  29. BamBamBuc Says:

Fans are fans, negative or positive. Not everyone will agree with decisions made by the team, and not everyone should. I liked Gruden as the head coach, I didn’t like the way the offense never improved. I didn’t like some of the horrible drafts. I didn’t like the 4-12 season with a top-notch coach. I didn’t like a 3-13 season with a rookie coach. I do like the last 2 drafts better than many in the past decade, although it’s too early to tell if they’re really good, or just “potential” that will never be realized.

What I don’t understand is continually rehashing a decision made over a year ago by the team. The decision was made, there’s nothing that can be done about it now. I understand the complaining back then, but still??? Really? Bitch about the current situation all you want, but to bring up a year old topic over and over saying how much better it was, when it’s really too early to tell if it was better or not (we haven’t seen Raheem for 7 years to compare notes). But I can understand the complaints about this past season and the coaching staff and front office, at least that’s to do with the current team.

It’s like saying “I sure wish we had Lee Roy Selmon at DE this year”. That’d be stupid, he’s way past his prime. But he was great when he was here. I can live in the past all I want, doesn’t mean it’s gonna change the present. It’d be better throwing a little constructive criticism out there like “we could probably use more DE help this year” than live in the past with our great DEs. Remember them for sure, for the great things they’ve done for us, but they’re not relevant to the current team.

Argue all you want for Cowher to be brought in, but Chucky is behind us now. Thanks Chucky, we’re all glad you coached us to a Super Bowl. It’s Rah’s turn now, and if he doesn’t get it done I hope we get a great replacement when the team makes that decision.

  30. JimBuc Says:

Eric — who am I to say? I am a commentor on the board just like you. You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine, mine being that you are not much of a fan because you actually post negative comments on an article that is nothing but positive. And why? Need look no further than your latest comment:

“Where was all that “don’t be negative” when the town was stringing Chucky up and running him out of town?”

So you are angry about Chuck and, therefore, every comment about the Bucs will be negative until you lose your anger. You are not a Buca fan as much as you are a Chucky fan.

  31. Capt.Tim Says:

Can any of you remember the last time we were talking about young WR’s in the preseason? How about the last time we were talking about a young QB? Young DT? I am glad we finally have some players here who might improve the FUTURE of the team! To me that alone was worth getting rid of the last bunch we had here. I was tired of running on retreads. What’s been missing from the Bucs the last few years was EXCITEMENT!! Some of these guys won’t pan out, but at least we finally have some players you wanna watch.
We haven’t had anyone here that we thought would turn out to be the next Buc AllPro, much less the next hall of Famer. And that was pretty boring.

  32. oar Says:

Can’t we all just get along and leave dumps where we want?

  33. Capt.Tim Says:

Yeah, Eric,to bad they don’t have a “whinny, bitchin’, constantly wrong fan “competition! If they did, you could actually be a winner for the first time in your life! Shucks

  34. Capt.Tim Says:

Has a nice ring to it, “Eric the Dumper”, that might catch on!

  35. Louie Says:

“Eric the Dumper”???!!! What grade you are you guys in?

  36. Capt.Tim Says:

    Louie, Louie , Louie!
Are you still struggling with that” why did they sign Williams to a 4 year deal, and not sign him to a one year tender?” question you drove us all crazy with?
Let it go , Louie, let it go!

  37. oar Says:

I’m in the grade called lighten up and laugh.
