Holding Will Be McCoy’s “Biggest Transition”

April 29th, 2010

Before getting into this post, Joe must mention that last week Woody Cummings, Bucs beat writer for the Tampa Tribune, quoted Gerald McCoy saying Warren Sapp would spend time working with him in Tampa.  Yet today Rick Stroud, aka Mad Twitterer, trumpets this same news in a story about McCoy, Sapp and Brian Price as if it’s a revelation in the St. Pete Times.

The Mad Twitterer talked to Sapp about the Bucs’ new defensive tackles, and Sapp didn’t have specifics on when he’ll be in town. But Sapp did offer some good takes on the challenges facing McCoy and second round pick Brian Price.

“The biggest transition will be the holding,” Sapp said. “In college I’d look at the referee and the flag would be dropped for holding. The first time I did that in NFL, I turned to the referee and said, ‘You didn’t see that hold?’ The ref looked at me and said, ‘Grow up.’ I said right then that it looks like I have to get this on my own. It’s a learning curve, that nobody, nobody can understand or appreciate. He’s going to have some fun and some sleepless nights. It goes with that position right there.

“We’re about to see how much does he really love it?” Sapp said. “You see his enthusiasm, but does that correlate to hours and hours in the office? When you want to go home to Oklahoma, maybe you should want to bring the family to Tampa. Does he take that mentality? Everything he needs is here. Disney is right up the road.”

Of course, Sapp’s talking about commitment.

Price and McCoy have an awful lot of work to do to even come close to being impact players in 2010. Joe has high hopes for them, just not this season.

If Sapp himself couldn’t impact the league or his team significantly in his first season, Joe can’t figure out why anyone should expect that of McCoy and Price.

Joe’s putting his big expecations in 2010 on guys like Aqib Talib, Tanard Jackson and Barrett Ruud to step up to near Pro Bowl levels, and the Bucs actually being able to move the chains on the ground.

Joe, I am thoroughly disappointed in you. It has been a coons age since we have had any hot babe’s pics. All we get is Fran Haasch in a business suit. What gives Joe? Did your old lady shut you down? find your stash or what? We have new Cheerleaders now and no pics. No Carmelita WTF? But the football news has really picked up for the better, but let’s not forget the girls.

I thought everyone had taken it for granted that these 2 were both going to be Sapp like next-year since what I am mostly hearing is that this draft was great, A quality etc.

Listen to Sapp, if these cant adjust to the pros or dont have a top-notch work ethic than they may not pan out. Nobody knows. Monte Kiffin was convinced that Gaines Adams would be better than Simeon Rice.

The draft is a crapshoot people.

Interesting. Joe had a complaint earlier this week that Joe had TOO MANY (!) references to Rachel Watson if you can imagine such a thing.

Joe’s been busy but he will correct this oversight.

Are these guys going to be developed and trained properly, or just called out in the media like last year? Not being negative. Just curious as to who is going to train the new kids. All the veterans that could have helped are gone.

    Joe,
This link is to an article about the Bucs in today’s National Football Post.

Something for all the haters out there to read.

Wow, a good point by Tampa2. If you buy the analogy that the Buc are essentially in a re-do of 1995 (i.e. building through the draft), the one thing that is still mssing from the current team is the equivalent of a Hardy Nickerson. When we drafted Sapp and Brooks the defense was clearly under the control of Hardy Nickerson, a loud fire starter that had an incredible work ethic and that ran the defense. Many of the great Bucs defenders from that era credit Nickerson.

We know Ruud is no Nickerson, so who is the on-field leader of this defense?

  11. oar Says:

That was the one major problem with releasing Brooks, they lost their leadership. I have said thier lack of leadership on the field is and will be a problem, especially now in these “re-building” years. Ronde does not come across as one of those loud fire starters, as Jimbuc put it. I don’t think there is anyone. They still might add a veteran, but that doesn’t mean they are gonna be a leader. Maybe one of the younger guys will step up and fill the leadership role?
