Sabby The Goat About To Be Put On Notice

March 10th, 2010

Watching Sabby the Goat last year try to play safety reminded Joe what a chicken looked like running around on a farm: confused, baffled, lost and subsequently, laying an egg.

It seems the Bucs are about to put Sabby the Goat on notice. Per The Mad Twitterer of the St. Petersburg Times, the Bucs are rounding up safeties in an effort to bolster what was a sieve in the secondary.

The safeties in question are Brodney Pool of Cleveland and Gibril Wilson of Miami.

Pool, who left St. Louis without a contract Monday, was scheduled to visit the New York Jets on Wednesday. The Bucs are hoping Pool will visit Tampa Bay later this week, according to his agent, Ben Dogra.

“It is tentative, but yes,” Dogra said of the Bucs plans to arrange a visit with Pool, who has a history of concussions during his career with the Browns.

Wilson will be looking to join his fourth team in as many years. He finished second on Dolphins in tackles (91) after signing a five-year, $27.5 million contract last Feb. 26. But Wilson struggled in pass coverage playing with two rookie cornerbacks. Only five NFL safeties played more snaps than Wilson in 2009 without an interception.

The Mad Twitterer goes on to write the Bucs were “disappointed” in the play of Sabby the Goat last year.

Ya’ think?!

Look, the Bucs are not bringing in safeties to replace Tanard Jackson. Clearly, painfully, the biggest hole in the Bucs’ secondary was Sabby the Goat. If the Bucs don’t draft Eric Berry, Sabby the Goat needs to be pushed by just about anyone walking the street.

It is simply unacceptable for Sabby the Goat to continue to stink up the Bucs’ secondary. Either he needs to dramatically improve next year, or be relegated to special teams only.

Sabby’s pass D did improve as the year wore on last season. He was very confused in coverage early on, but that may have had to do with the new scheme/DC.His problems with tackling are based on bad technique & taking poor angles, which Rah may think he can correct. So I in general agree with Joe’s conclusion here–too early to give up on Piscitelli completely, but he is skating on thin ice.

Pool and Wilson are even worse than Sabby.

Is this really our only options?? My god , we are such bottom feeders…

  3. Cosmo Kramer Says:

Radio, Gibril was a very good SS at NY not too long ago. He was forced to play more coverage as a safety in Miami which is not his strength. Since he would be replacing or competing with Sabby for SS, it should be a decent signing.

Maybe Sabby can figure it out this year. If not, Lynch isn’t the most spectacular athlete, but he’s technically pretty sound – we could do worse.
If we’re going to sign one of these guys, I’d go with Wilson – he’s better in the box.

  5. Louie Says:

I doubt Sabby lost too much sleep last night worrying about Pool or Wilson taking his job. He should be more worried about the Bucs drafting a safety in the early rounds. This is very safety rich draft.

  6. Cosmo Kramer Says:

Jeff, yeah, I want WIlson here as well over Poole. That atrocious run defense we had due to those whiffed tackles by Sabby and Tanard will certainly get better with a Jermaine Phillips like SS in Gibril.

  7. Radio Mushmouth Says:

A safety that can’t cover … and we play Drew Brees twice a year??

Wow , I’m so excited at the proposition ! So are the Saints !

  8. JDouble Says:

    3rd or 4th round

    Kam Chancellor
    Darrell Stuckey
    Major Wright
    Barry Church

All better than Sabby. All better than these FA scrubs. We should draft two and let them battle it out. Sabby can be the 2nd string FS.

  9. Eric Says:

When you start filling your roster with quality players like Reggie Brown, and now these possibly one of these guys, you can really see the plan coming together.

  10. jvato24 Says:

Yeah Eric .. there is just sooo much talent on the FA market .. Maybe we can just press the create a player button and make more FA’s then we will have some ALL-Stars

As a Fins fan also, I beg the Bucs not to sign Wilson. He was really awful last season. It was embarrassing how bad he was. The Bucs had trouble with pass coverage and they want to bring Wilson in??? This must be a joke. Wilson is terrible. There is a reason why teams keep getting rid of him because he can’t play!! Sure the Fins did play rookie corners for most of the year, but man he didn’t help them at all. Every week there was a big pass play with Wilson trying to catch the receiver while he races into the end zone.

Stop this madness now!!! Say no to Wilson!!!!!!

  12. d-money Says:

First of all this is a tentative visit. Just because someone visits a team doesn’t mean he’s going to sign with them.

Nowhere does it say that these players have been signed. And if one or both of them do sign. What is the risk in signing a couple of guys for some depth and see if they can offer anything to your team. Teams do it every year in the offseason. They sign a bunch of guys to come to camp and if they don’t work out you cut them lose.

    No harm no foul.

  13. Eric S Says:

Wilson doesn’t play special teams. He is terrible in pass coverage. He’s only decent against the run. Where exactly will this guy help the Bucs in any way? I don’t want him teaching our young safeties how to look good while chasing a receiver or tight end for 40-50 yards.

  14. Jonny Says:

Radio Mushmouth, safety that can’t cover vs safety that can’t cover and tackle to save his life. And FYI we play D.Williams, J.Stewart, M.Turner and Saints RBs twice as well.

Actually sabby did well in coverage the 2nd half of the season…it’s his tackling that sucked.
