Bucs Can’t Ignore Coles

March 5th, 2010

Joe believes Mark Dominik and Raheem The Dream have to know, just have to know that Josh Freeman needs a legitimate veteran receiver to throw the ball to.

They don’t have one; and veterans don’t enter the draft.

Now Joe has no insider source on this or any agent spreading rumors in his ear about Willie Parker, but Joe has to believe the Bucs realize that wide receiver Laveranues Coles is someone they must pursue. Coles was released yesterday by the Bengals.

The former Seminole has 674 catches and will play the 2010 season at 32 years old. He was a locker room guy with the Jets, and he catches the ball.

No, Coles isn’t a legitimate No. 1 receiver. But he’s a heck of a No. 2, which the Bucs don’t have.

Agreed. But other than no state tax, why would a FA WR, as talent limited as it is, want to come here? If Freeman is to progress, if the offense is to progress, WR has to be addressed. Has to.

    bucfanjeff:

What team could provide Coles with as many touches as he could get with the Bucs? Just about any other team he may be riding the pine. Here, he’d start.

  3. justin F Says:

would rather have that kevin walters guy over coles but i read in the paper today the tribune the sports that mark dominik said bucs would consider trading for brandon marshall if the price was right Joe did you see that in the paper and any thought?

  4. zech Says:

Joe I just don’t see domink signing any freeagents this year and I believe dominik when he said we will build threw the draft and not in FA. Don’t get me wrong I really hope I’m wrong but I did predict that the bolts won’t make big trades and I don’t see them makin the playoffs either and I also see lawton getn caned too! As far as the bucs I don’t see them doin anything! I really hope I’m wrong but I doubt it!!

I just don’t see the fit. They recently got rid of Bryant partly because of his age (soon to be 29). And now you are saying the Bucs would be interested in the 32-year-old Coles? He had a very mediocre season playing with a very good QB. I don’t think he is a #2 anymore. I don’t believe he has much left in the tank. This would be a bad move IMO. Kevin Walter would be a much better choice at a #2 than the mummy like Coles. I am coming around to Walter. I enjoy reading KC Joyner on that other sports site and he really likes Walter. And he gave some compelling evidence. I think it is very telling that the Bengals who desperately need receivers got rid of Coles.

  6. Eric Says:

When were talking about bringing in Coles, who would be our best receiver, that pretty much says it all…………….

I agree with Zech, it looks like these guys are going to go into the season with rookies and Stroughter, Clayton, Mo.

    Good luck with that!

  7. Gatorgod Says:

The Bengals just didn’t want to keep paying him top $$. Coles is a great football player. The Bucs need more of those. ….Bet it Walter or Coles, they need some legitimate ball catchers while whatever rookie receivers they get work in.

  8. zech Says:

I really think dominik and the dream think claytons a #1 reciever and if that is true then fire both of them because josh freemens gonna suck this year because none of his recievers can catch the ball!

  9. bucfanjeff Says:

Joe, I agree, it was more of a blanket statement. Coles could easily come here, and could be a viable choice for him having played at FSU.

Joe almost hates to say this but angry Bucs fans make for good traffic… until everyone just throws their hands up in disgust and the anger turns to apathy.

That written, Joe almost dreads if the Bucs don’t address the wide receiver posiiton and Clayton has yet another rotten year.

Fans will be beyond outraged. It just might turn into kickball hooliganism.

  11. Tommy Boy Says:

I agree that the Bengals cut Coles because of his salary. They panicked last year when Housh left for Seattle and over paid for Coles to prevent him from going anywhere else. I’d love to have Coles. I hoped we go for him last year. Sign Coles, trade our 3rd for Boldin and draft one in the 2nd round or later.

Kevin Walter is in high demand from why I’ve read so far which is going to cause a bidding war. The Bucs won’t be involved in any such thing. Walter is nice but just a pipe dream to us depressed Bucs fans.

C’mon Bucs give us something to look forward to.

  12. bucfanjeff Says:

Joe, the very thought that Clayton is being given ANOTHER chance has me sick to m…umph..excuse me..a little upchuck there..to my stomach.
Trade him, release him, or re-negotiate his contract to be on par with other #4 WR’s. Enough is enough already.

  13. Eric Says:

Nobody is paying attention to the Dream. He believes the new receiver coach is going to turn Clayton around. That, plus Stroughter will “help five”.

Its all good. Not a thing to be upset or concerned about. We need to all get behind this thing.

  14. LaughingCat Says:

Bucs can eyeball anyone they want. But if the checkbook stays shut, ain’t no one coming here.

Reminds me of hte line from An Officer and A Gentleman.

    “Don’t eyeball me, boy!”

  15. gotbbucs Says:

The Bucs can wait on Coles, he’ll still be sitting there a week from now and he won’t be the last veteran WR that’s going to hit the market. Right now what we need to be doing is checking on all trade posibilities out there for #1 WR’s. We’ve got a roster full of #2 and #3 WR’s.

  16. zech Says:

I think there goin to draft a number 1 reciever and I think raheem and dominik r happy with clayton, stroughter, stovall ! There not goin to trade for a #1 reciever becuse then there gonna have to sign him and the glazers won’t do that! I just don’t see dominik bein active in freeagency and trades! I hope I’m wrong but the way dominik is bein they won’t be active in doin anything but the draft and how they can trade into the late first round early 2nd round or unless they trade there 3rd pick in the draft all together!

  17. Eric S Says:

This is what the Bucs are reduced to? Picking up players who can’t separate from corners anymore and had single coverage the whole season and it did jack with that. I know the Bucs are desperate for WRs, but they can do better than this. At least go for up and coming players rather than players who have one foot in the grave. Armageddon is almost upon us if 43 catches and 514 yards is considered a great year for a #2 guy. I am all for getting receivers, but let’s make sure they have a pulse.

  18. LaughingCat Says:

Retreads. We loved them from the Raiders. We’ll take them again., No star receivers for us. How dare we have show-boats on our team. We like them average, unassuming, under-performing. (That was a dig at Clayton.)

  19. zech Says:

Coles would rather go back to the jets then come to tampa anyway and besides dominik and raheem won’t give him the time of day anyway!!

  20. RahDomDaBest Says:

Hey Joe, it’s gonna be a rough off-season for even Joe Bucs Fan. We are going to need more speculation like this or the crickets will be a chirping.

  21. Eric Says:

Lets sign AB, trade for Marshall, get Dansby, Peppers, replace the GM and Coach……………

sorry, let me get my head straight.

  22. Vince Says:

Considering what’s currently on our roster @ WR and with all due respect to “Stonehands” Clayton, I’d dance a jig if we signed a proven passcatcher like Coles. I know he isn’t a long term fix @ receiver, but to help Freeman for 1-2 years while drafting another young receiver and giving him time to mature makes sense to me.

  23. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Does Coles still have the speed he once did , or has he lost a step. Not sure because he didn’t play much.

If he’s still a burner , we could use him , because we have no deep treats whatsoever.

  24. gotbbucs Says:

I’m buessing that they’re looking for receivers that are bigger than Coles. I think Freeman is going to need some big targets that can go up and get the ball.

  25. Tj Tillman Says:

I completly with bucfanjeff How in the world can they continue to give Clayton year after year another chance. With each year there is another excuse His weight ,Injuries (um Clayton Bryant missed more games than you and he had 39 catches and 600 yqards 5 td’s) oh and the last excuse was Gruden. Gruden may be a asshole but if you are a stud you will play. He has to restructre his contract or be cut If he shows nothing this preaseason goodbye he has his own web site 80sucks.com Fans cant stand him he is booed. He literally lise us the Dolphins game for us (even though it was a bad call. Bottom line Fuck Micheal Clayton he needs to be a man and take responsiblity for his poor play it has been since 2004 since his good year dammn
