Adjusting To Vapid Receiving Corps

March 7th, 2010

With such a thin group of receivers, the Bucs may look to get the King of Turds more involved.

No. 1 wide receiver, Sammie Stroughter.

No. 2 wide receiver, Mo Stovall.

No. 3 wide receiver, blocking icon Michael Clayton.

No. 4 wide receiver, Mark Bradley.

No, this is not the wide receiver depth chart for the Florida Tuskers of the UFL.

The list above is the depth chart for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL.

Joe can understand how fans are beyond frustrated, if not angry. One could make an argument that is the worst set of receivers in the NFL. Unless the Bucs make some trades, surprise everyone in signing a restricted free agent or load up on receivers in the draft, this is going to be a putrid passing game.

Poor Josh Freeman.

With such a dearth in receiver talent, teams, much like last year, are going to load up with 10 if not 11 defenders in the box and dare the Bucs to pass. Unless the offensive line reverts to its former self, this is a recipe for disaster.

Solid, forward-thinking coaches however will try to make the best of bad situations. This has led a Bucs fan to lodge a question to the Tampa Tribune that, since the Bucs have limited talent at receiver, why not use a two-tight end set since the best receivers the Bucs (currently) have are tight ends?

Q: How come the Bucs don’t run more two tight end sets with Jerramy Stevens and Kellen Winslow? They are both huge and both have shown the ability to catch and gain yards after the catch. It doesn’t make any sense to me — if you have targets, use them.

— Collin, Lakeland

A: With an offseason to tweak a few things, offensive coordinator Greg Olson just may make two-tight-end sets a bigger part of his offense. We’ll just have to wait and see.

— Woody Cummings

This makes a lot of sense to Joe. The King of Turds may be a less than apt blocker, but the Bucs have a designated blocker in Clayton. When your best receivers are actually tight ends, use them.

I am trying to stay positive. I would not be shocked if the Bucs take Dez Bryant they will probaly drop down espically if the two Dt’s are off the board. I mean look how many chances they have given Clayton dont you think they will do the same thing with Sabbi by not drafting Berry. I never forget Morris end of season press conference he said he is going to do what he had to to help #5 ( what morris calls him so much better than him calling him tito) Next year they need to Balance the carries between are Rb’s um Erenst grahm can run the ball.Just my opinion I feel like Managmement is saying hey we had a good team last year we are going to build trhough the draft and we will be better well we will see !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Eric Says:

C’mon Joe, you know the Tuskers have better receivers than that.

  3. Jonny Says:

Why not make Clayton a TE, he is a good blocker and he has the size and tough physique, very good athleticism for a TE. Winslow is a lousy blocker and he could become the receiver.

Why does the TBO sports section regarding the Bucs not even covering free agency? They haven’t written an article since Free Agency started.

I understand that the Bucs aren’t doing anything, but no articles, opinions about it?

That group would have had umpteen negative articles about Gruden and allen by now.

Heck they even have one of Gruden and Teebow… as if to poke fun at…

HOW ABOUT they COVER the BUCS current chaotic organization that has ZERO pull in the National Football League.

    Not even a peep.

At least JBF puts together points of view that brings about thought… TBO Bucs SUCKS!

What pathetic thinkers over at One Buc Place.

Hell if I were still around I’d move Winslow to WR and move Clayton to TE along with Stevens/Gilmore at the other end.

Personally I’d skip drafting Dez and look at drafting a left OG or OT with my first draft pick. let’s face it the O-line needs better protection for Josh.

Speaking of which I would have signed Jake by now – yup you gotta have a QB over 35 years in your backfield in my scheme.

If I were in charge things would have been so much better but hey you all wanted my head and look what you got….

Frankly Bruce and I really enjoyed reading JBF last year and we have few chuckles when you “fans” got all excited after the Green Bay win…have fun in 2010

The only plus to our current lack of F.A. activity, is that it will bring about a more sudden regeime change. Now, if we can dump the money grabbing, rat bastard

That Mad magazine looking Glazer is laughing at the fans and stacking and packing paper. Why don’t he sell this team to Mark Cuban he can tap dance a little better than these clowns. I’m sure He would try to put a better product on the field. Derrick ward should be ashamed to wear the # 28 on his back Warrick Dunn could have put up double the numbers he did last year for a third of the money. You wouldn’t find warrick piss drunk staggering through a hotel lobby saturday night before a game. How can a team try to convince the public to buy season tickets then turn around and trott this collection of bums out on the field. No free agent wants to come here anyhow unless he plans on playing dead like fat albert did last year in washington his wallet caused him to constantly pull his hamstring. what happened to you build it and they will come. Fire them cannons

    Joe,

Let’s be real, before Mark Bradley was cut from the woeful Chiefs for dropping a TD pass (where have we heard that before?) he produced more catches, yards, and TD’s than Clayton did for his entire season of 7 million dollar pay.

I think if we are going to use a depth chart based on last season’s production Clayton would be dead last. Where he belongs.

  11. RahDomDaBest Says:

    Fire them cannons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. JDouble Says:

I like the idea of using more two tight end sets. Sadly, I don’t think we have the personal to do it. Jeremy Stevens is garbage in my book. Maybe we could get Alex Smith back? I wonder if the Titans could be convinced to trade Jared Cook. They drafted him just last year in the 3rd round, but hardly used him at all last year. I think that guy has great potential as a pass catching TE. Either way, I think we need another solid pass catching TE to make it work.

Also, I hope we continue the experiement to use Demar Dotson as a TE. He seemed to be head and shoulders above Gilmore or Stevens when it came to run blocking last year.

  13. JJ Says:

How about we just get rid of the KING OF TURDS and get someone like Tony Sheffler who wants out of his organization. With Winslow and Sheffler THAT would be an unstoppable TE corp. Stevens gets way too much credit for some “talent” that we have yet to see. Lets get some productive players now so that we can WIN NOW!

Why does everyone seem to think that if they have not gotten a receiver by now, they will not get a receiver? We have a long way to go don’t we?

Why does the TBO sports section regarding the Bucs not even covering free agency? They haven’t written an article since Free Agency started.

That is simply not true. There have been recent posts at TBO.com on the Bucs since midnight Friday. Joe Henderson even cut a video discussing free agency — Joe linked to it in another post.

To be honest, if you are looking for a 20-paragraph story on the Bucs and free agency, it’s hard to write a story about something that hasn’t happened.

  18. Pruritis Ani Says:

“No. 3 wide receiver, blocking icon Michael Clayton.” LOL Hilarious dude.

I know in the previous article you noted that perhaps Raheem is getting hung out to dry by the front office. That maybe so, but the real loser in all of this is Josh Freeman.

Imagine, being in his position.. Here you are, at a new job, and you are thrust into a starting role where so much is expected of you. Yet, you aren’t given any tools to accomplish this role (training or supporting cast).

I thought for sure Clayton would be gone and AB would stay. Yeah, I know the guy had some issues and a price tag… but man, could he make some circus catches.

Also, Joe.. I gotta give you props dude. At the end of the season, I was asking myself.. What the hell is Joe going to write about once the season ends.. I must say, you still find some really good material. Which of course is deeply appreciated by a Bucs fan currently living in Texan country :D.

  19. Joe Says:

    Pruritis Ani:

Thanks for the kind words. Very much appreciated.

    Joe tries.

  20. Eric S Says:

I just don’t get what the Bucs are doing. With so many holes, you would think they try to fill some of them through free agency. And with teams every year making huge turnarounds, you would think the Bucs would make some effort toward this goal. It is depressing. The Bucs are going to put so much pressure on these rookies that will be coming in. That isn’t completely fair to put them in that position. They better hope the ones drafted in rounds 1-3 contribute immediately or else this will be another long long year.
