Warren Sapp Won’t Be Coaching Any Time Soon

January 20th, 2010

When the legends of the Bucs lone Super Bowl win all retired (sans Ronde Barber, who may last one more year), Derrick Brooks (who officially hasn’t retired… yet) was always linked by fans as a future coach.

Shoot, prowl various Florida State message boards and hardly a day passes that someone doesn’t write that Brooks should be a coach at his alma mater — some even wanted him to succeed Bobby Bowden despite no having any coaching experience.

But those close to Brooks know he has higher goals than just coach. Some suggest he’s about to run for state senate.

Of the legends: Brooks, Barber, John Lynch, Warren Sapp and Mike Alstott, rarely is Sapp’s name mentioned as a possible coach.

In case there was any wonder, Sapp, who works for the NFL Network and pushes rental cars in TV commercials, took his name out of any coaching consideration for the time being in a recent chat on NFL.com.

Have you ever thought of becoming a line coach?

Warren Sapp, NFL Network

No, hours are too long.

That is one of the reasons Brooks is said not to be interested in coaching. Brooks makes a pretty piece of change in his various business interests and working for BSPN and Sirius NFL Radio. Why should he or would he want to take a pay cut and work double the hours?

If you love football and love mentoring young men…it’s a know brainer. I think Sapp is more about money that helping young men better themselves. I’m not putting him down, I’d probably rather take the easy road with more money myself.
