Forget Brandon Marshall

January 16th, 2010

Don't bank on wide receiver Brandon Marshall suiting up for the Bucs in 2010.

With the Bucs in dire need of receivers and the status of many of the Bucs receivers for 2010 up in the air, many Bucs fans have clamored for the Bucs to acquire disgruntled yet talented Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

But Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune isn’t as ready to jump on the Marshall bandwagon. Cummings suggests Marshall’s diva-like attitude is just the type of mentality that turns off members of the  Bucs braintrust.

Q: Could y’all see the Bucs pulling the trigger to get Brandon Marshall and use one of our second-round picks and another late-round pick to land him in a Bucs uniform if the Broncos do want to trade him. He would really help Josh Freeman grow and have a nice target to throw to.

Patrick Dotson, Tampa

A: Don’t look for the Bucs to go after any troublemakers like Marshall. There are a lot of talented receivers who don’t come with the headaches that Marshall brings.

Well, the Bucs are going to have to do something at receiver. Michael Clayton and his $7.5 million per touchdown salary is hardly secure. Many believe free agent Antonio Bryant is gone.

So for a team that needs to build around second-year quarterback Josh Freeman, the Bucs are looking at sophomore Sammie Stroughter and Clayton-clone Maurice Stovall as Freeman’s top two receiver targets.

That’s not very promising for Joe.

A LOT???!!! OK Einstein, name some. This year’s free agent crop of receivers is not very impressive. Any decent receiver that can be obtained via trade are going to have a little baggage. That fact didn’t stop the Bucs from trading for K2 who certainly had issues.

Joe, I’m not sure why you feel the need to inform us what the Tribune writers have to say. I deliberately don’t read their stuff because they constantly spew $hit. I’ll be out of here the day you post something by Fennelly.

    LOL Louie:

Joe has linked to Fennelly several times.

Roy Cummings is a nub. Almost all of the best wide recievers are divas. If McDumbass over there in Denver wants to continue to trade away his probowlers, I would hope we’d be in the mix. Passing on a top 5 reciever in his prime because he is a diva….is just idiotic. Where ever Marshall goes, if he gets paid and gets the ball, he’ll shut up and play.

If McDaniels wants the # pick for a QB, or the #3 pick for any reason, I think we could swap 1st round picks and give them Bryant for Marshall. Marshall, Winslow, and Stroughter would be a helluva start to a great offense. One more reason to resign Bryant…trade bait.

I personally would go after Marshall. Sure he has had some behavior issues, but sometimes you have to take a chance. And he went to UCF, so he might want to come back to Florida and play. It does though make me a bit nervous because the guy has been in a ton of trouble in the last 5 years or so.

Another option is Boldin, who I would prefer over Marshall. Another very good possession receiver. He is also a good blocker. And he is better behaved than Marshall. Just moaning about his contract. No DUIs or domestic disputes with him. He went to FSU and said he wanted to play for the Phins. Tampa is not a bad second option at all. I think Arizona will trade him. They already have Breaston, Ducet and Fitzgerald. They can get a draft pick or two from teams. I just wonder what it would take to get him.

Bottom line, the Bucs need to get someone in here. They especially need to get someone if they get rid of Clayton and Bryant. My dream would be a Boldin, Bryant, Sammie, Stovall WR corps. Maybe bring in a draft pick or a second tier WR to complete the transformation. Hopefully Cadillac can stay healthy and Ward can bounce back. That is another position that is a concern because of the age and injury factor of our RBs.

Forget about the players with baggage. The Bucs have too damn many of them now. Trade Bryant and Clayton for draft picks. Someone will point out a player with problems that turned out great. There are at least a 100 for every 1 of them that didn’t turn out to be anything but a pain in the backside. Play percentages and go with big, fast, players with good character. Players who make negative press should be off limits. The Bucs get more than there share of negative press now. All because someone in their Management is allowing players in that have already made negative press. They some way convience themselves all of that will change when they become a Buc. Good Luck. Please include unproductive players on your problem player list.

You don’t take a Safety or a Offensive Linemen if he is trouble making diva. With a top 5 reciever you grin and bear it. The Fiztgeralds and Marvin Harrisons are rare. This guy isn’t as bad as Terrel Owens or anything. I think he is about the same as most top recievers. If we draft a guy like Dez Bryant in the draft…chances are he will be just as much of a Diva as Marshall.

Besides, it’s pretty obvious that McDaniels is a prick. A little mini Bellichek. I don’t condone Marshall’s behavior, but I can’t say I’m surprised either. I think when it’s all said and done, Cutler and MArshal will both have many probowl years with other teams and McDaniels will be unemployed and remembered as Denver’s worst coach ever. Let’s be part of his legacy by being the team that lucked out and got Brandon MArshall.

I don’t see them getting in bed with a guy like Marshall. We don’t need any trouble makers in a locker room of young guys with a young QB. Money will not be spent on these high priced guys with the uncaped year and 2011 lockout on the table.
