Joe had Nolan Ryan flashbacks watching Byron Leftwich throw the football

Bucs nation saw Byron Leftwich throw a near pick on the play before he threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Brian Clark. On the TD, Clark made a big-time adjustment on the ball to bail out Leftwich.

Simply stated, those two plays put Leftwich firmly into the lead in the battle for the Bucs starting quarterback job.

Little things in games mean so much. Entire seasons change on plays and possessions like those.

That got Joe thinking, as he listens to the Bucs post-game call in show on 620 WDAE-AM, hosted by friend Scott Ledger. It’s the minutes after the most awaited Bucs preseason game in years, and nobody is calling in to talk to Ledger. Where are you Bucs fans?

Normally, Joe wouldn’t care about such things.

But with blackouts looming, a  Bucs “post-game call-in show” on the premier sports radio station in Florida not drawing any callers has Joe questioning whether the Tampa Bay market is going to step up and sell out this year’s home games.

Joe hopes the games get sold out so the Bay area avoids the stain of blacked out games.

Joe – there are many reasons why there wasn’t the normal “rush’ of callers for the post-game: Saturday night, dismal outcome and total letdown.

Let’s face it how many people really watch or care about the 4th quarter of a preseason game?

I watched up to the last 10 minutes before we left to go out. There really wasn’t much to get excited about. Sure Ward & Smith looked really impressive on offense. The defense, in particual Sabby & White were impressive but in the 3rd quarter Freeman looked like the college kid that he is.

After seeing Josh Freeman in a real NFL game as I could think of was – with this kid playing the Bucs will revert into the Yuks in one season.

Maybe Bucs listener finally listened to their moms – when you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all?

Well, staying up late to watch a Pre-Season game is hard enough, to do so to talk to the “ledge” blech… 620 is the premier “sports” station because they have no real competition…1010 and 1040 just don’t have enough local shows. Sileo and Duemig at least talk sports (most of the time) however, not Ron and Ian, maybe 50% sports. Justin and Derick are better than Ledge, and have shows at least. I know 620 gives Joe good air but, sports talk in Tampa Bay is rather weak overall.

Josh Johnson is by far the best QB on the roster and it showed last night. Leftwich is right there too, but falls apart quickly. McCown needs to go and take that back up center Mahan with him.

I wouldn’t go as far as to call Freeman a bust after one pre-season game, but as first round picks go, he was a waste of a pick. We could have had more big defensive fire power with that 19’th moved up to 17’th pick. That just doesn’t appear to be a good pick at this point. Give Josh Johnson a shot, you might be glad you did.

I agree with BigMac, Freeman is not the future QB! He may be the one playing for a couple of years, but once the Glazers are done paying off Gruden, we’ll get a real coach in here and Freeman will be out on his ass like Ryan Leaf. The reason I didn’t listen to Ledge’s show is that I simply couldn’t stomach talking about the Bucs anymore last night! Get rid of McCown, and keep Josh Johnson around, he’s our future QB!
