Expect Freeman To Start… Sometime

July 26th, 2009

Though Joe shudders to think of quarterback bust-in-waiting Josh Freeman starting any game this season, he has resigned himself to the sad truth it will likely happen.

That’s why Joe took steps recently to make sure his living room is accident-proof from all the bottles of Caybrew and glasses of Bushmills he will have to throw down in an effort to numb the pain.

CBSSports.com’s Clark Judge is of a similar mind. He too is convinced Freeman will start sometime this season.

Freeman will start at some point — the only question is when. The Bucs have been saying a lot of nice things about the guy lately and, despite planning to have Freeman sit this season, they haven’t ruled out working him in as a starter. I wouldn’t count on it, at least not the first half of the season. He left school early and will take time to absorb the Bucs’ system. Plus, he’s not signed yet, which is another bad sign for a rookie quarterback hoping to start. “He’s pushing the envelope,” head coach Raheem Morris said. He needs to push Leftwich and McCown.

Judge goes on to say that, though Leftwich may have the edge to start the season at quarterback, he has a hunch it will be Luke McCown who will eventually give way to Freeman.

Joe doesn’t know whether to cry or laugh.

The longer Freeman holds out from signing a contract the less likely he’ll be a starter.

Mr. Lucky hopes that the Bucs hold the line and don’t give into the big demands and capitulate like the Detroit lions did. Mr. Lucky thinks it is a crying shame that UNTESTED/UNPROVEN players get such big contracts while other players (Rudd/Penn) can’t renegotiate their contracts.

So go ahead Josh Freeman, hold out of training camp and give us Bucs fans a break – I’m tired of seeing players get paid millions of $ for holding a chipboard or worse yet tossing game killing interceptions.

The intelligence of Judge’s opinions need to be questioned if he thinks Leftwich has the edge to be the starter.

I think the Bucs best shot at salvaging this season (and salvaging I mean 6-10 instead of 2-14) is McCown to play a bulk of the season. I’m also positive that Freeman will play this season. Their is just too much Man-Love coming off from the Bucs fearless leader. Maybe he just likes looking at a muscular team…kinda like a video game.

Man love…sham love…unless and until Freeman signs a contract it’s a mute point.

Hold out Josh…please just enough so that Raheem HAS to bench you from the start.
