Baseball Cards And The Bucs

"Now look Ra,' I bought a boatload of Roy Miller cards at two cents a piece. If you start him in six games, the price on the cards will easily go up to twenty cents a card. The we unload them and we'll split the take, OK?"

Vacation Man, of BSPN.com, has a wonderful feature on Bucs coach Raheem the Dream and general manager Mark Dominik, about how they are sort of changing the culture of the Bucs.

Vacation Man has an interesting analogy. He is stressing how, possibly because they are young, Raheem the Dream and Dominik still have the little boy in them, which Joe thinks is good.

In the story, Vacation Man suggests the Bucs duo are investing in quarterback bust-in-waiting Josh Freeman’s rookie cards.

If you want to make some easy money, go out and buy as many Josh Freeman rookie cards as you can find. Once upon a time, that’s exactly what Dominik would have done. Heck, it’s pretty much the same thing Dominik and Morris did, much to the chagrin of Bucs fans, when they selected the Kansas State quarterback in the first round of the April draft.

Pick that move apart — and Tampa Bay fans have been doing that continually — but just remember Dominik has a pretty good track record of knowing when to buy and sell. He ran a baseball card store (yeah, he sold football cards, too) and went to card shows and flea markets to put himself through college. He also built one heck of a collection.

They’re just about all gone now. Those cards paid the tuition at Kansas University — and then some.

Let’s get serious for a moment: NFL players aren’t flimsy pieces of cardboard to put between the spokes of a bicycle. Just because someone can make cash collecting baseball cards — or real estate or stocks — doesn’t mean someone can build a football team. Far from it, in fact.

But Joe is certainly hoping Dominik and Raheem The Dream can get the job done. Joe also likes the youthful take Vacation Man used in describing Dominik and The Dream.

One of the things that has kept Joe in sports media for decades is Joe’s enthusiasm for sports.

Joe never fails to get geeked like a little kid when watching or going to a game; Joe has never lost that enthusiasm. It keeps Joe going.

So it’s great to see from Dominik and Raheem The Dream still have that boyish enthusiasm.

Now let’s get some wins boys.
