Congressman Derrick Brooks?

June 4th, 2009

A 49ers fan called Sirius NFL Radio’s “The Opening Drive” Wednesday morning to ask co-hosts Bob Papa and Randy Cross about the possibility of former Bucs great and future Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks playing for the 49ers and Mike Singletary.

Cross all but said Brooks shouldn’t play another season in the NFL. Why? Because he thinks that highly of Brooks.

Randy Cross: He has had a monster impact on the community in Tampa. Just ask anyone from Tampa about Derrick Brooks. Football is a wonderful part of his life, no doubt. But he’s not done making an impact on people’s lives. I just don’t know if that includes football. He would be a Mike Singletary kind of a guy. But I can see him being more involved in the non-profit [elements] of his community. Hell, I can see him being a congressman from the Tampa area. He’s that good of a person. It just depends on what he wants to do with his life.

Bob Papa: Why are you trying to sully his reputation by putting him in politics?

RC: He would raise the reputation of [Washington] D.C. if he went that route.

Congressman Derrick Brooks? Governor Derrick Brooks? Senator Derrick Brooks?

Though Joe is absolutely convinced Brooks would be an elite coach if he wanted to be, whether that’s college or the NFL, Joe is equally convinced Brooks has bigger fish (and rewards) to fry. Running for public office would not surprise Joe.
