Which QB Wants It Most?

Joe wonders what Bucs quarterback will fight hardest for the starting job and a leadership role

Talking to Earnest Graham the other day about team leadership and the quarterback position really got Joe thinking about how the Bucs’ posse of QBs might approach the competition in mini-camp.

Is Josh Freeman going to assert himself as a leader and will his way into the starter’s competition? Does he have it in him? Does Josh Johnson?

Shouldn’t Freeman be that kind of guy as a first round pick?

And how motivated is Byron Leftwich to take over the Bucs’ huddle?

How will Luke McCown handle the pressure of being the No. 1 guy on shaky ground entering camp?

Graham talked about how Jeff Garcia was the “unquestioned leader” of the Bucs’ offense. Obviously, the Bucs will need that kind of leadership again to be successful. Joe just doesn’t know from where it will come.

It sure will be fun to watch.

On that note, it seems Garcia has little intention of settling for a backup role in Oakland. For Garcia fans, Joe recommends this San Jose Mercury News story out of Raiders’ mini-camp on Friday.

JaMarcus Russell needs to do more for the Raiders than just whiz deep passes as he did Friday during their first spring mini-camp.

He needs to race down the field to drills, as Jeff Garcia did.

He needs to pull aside the team’s newest weapon — receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, last month’s first-round draft pick — for instructional chats, as Garcia did.

He needs to be a leader, as Garcia was in just his first practice as a Raider.

Again, Joe wonders which Bucs QB will approach mini-camp the way Garcia did yesterday for the Raiders.
