More Pickoffs For Bucs In 2009?

May 31st, 2009

The ballsy move of switching rock-solid safety Jermaine Phillips to linebacker meant one thing right away: Sabby Piscitelli would be a starting safety.

Last year if anything, Piscitelli proved he wasn’t ready to be an everyday starter. But Joe has to keep reminding himself that Monte Kiffin is in Tennessee now, far from Tampa Bay. This year’s defense will be drastically different.

So different that Piscitelli told Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times that he and fellow safety Tanard Jackson will rack up a lot more interceptions this fall.

“It’s not dramatically different … but I think this scheme definitely allows myself and Tanard (Jackson) to be more aggressive,” the 2007 second-round pick said. “I think this is a playmaking scheme. I think we’re going to have a lot more interceptions. I think that’s true for the whole secondary. We’re going to have a lot more opportunities to put our hands on the ball.”

Joe thinks one of the worst moves of the offseason was to move a 30-year old from a position he excelled at to a new position thereby weakening what was the defense’s strength. The NFL is not the place to learn a new position, especially at an age where most players are planning their after-football life.

Again, Joe has to keep reminding himself this is a new defense and that maybe Piscitelli will shine unlike he did under Kiffin’s Tampa-2.

Apparently Joe never saw John Lynch in his first year or two or Flip in his first few either.

A little different changing positions when you are 23 or 24 and changing positions when you are 30 like Phillips.
