Josh Freeman Speaks

May 15th, 2009

Bucs bust-in-waiting quarterback Josh Freeman recently appeared on KLAC-AM in Los Angeles to talk — what else?– football. Among the many things he discussed were how Freeman handles people like Joe who firmly believe Raheem the Dream needed to take a cold shower before trading up to get Freeman.

“You’ve got to take it in two ways – obviously you’ve got to let that add fuel to your fire when you see all these guys doing these other things. But on the flip side, they were winning a lot of games. We weren’t winning a lot of games at Kansas State, and I mean, that’s how it goes – the teams that win the most games get the most pub.”

Joe knows he’s going to get pelted with this question (again) so he’s going to briefly explain:

Joe hopes Freeman, who seems like a swell kid, is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Joe just doesn’t see it. Freeman is Raheem the Dream’s version of Viagra, only Raheem the Dream has long surpassed the 40-hour plateau.

That’s the only reason Joe can fathom why the Bucs traded up to get Freeman, who not only wasn’t even the fourth-best quarterback in his conference, but his teams had lousy records.

And Joe doesn’t buy this nonsense about Freeman didn’t have any help. The list is long — of both NFL stars and slugs — who played with nobodies in college and carried their teams to fabulous seasons. Freeman never did.

That written, Joe prays when Freeman retires he’s wearing multiple Super Bowl rings won with the Bucs.

BTW, this clip of Freeman’s interview demonstrates just how miserable Fox Sports Radio has sunk to in recent months. Nothing like calling an African-American athlete “a young buck.” What a wordsmith!

Geez. With guys like that working radio, no wonder Howard Stern ran to satellite.

I agree with you on Freeman but you’re opinion that calling a young man “a young buck” is somehow racist is absurd. Society often uses the term “young buck” as my grandfather did with me. This is more of a personal attack on Fox, isn’t it Joe?

  2. Joe Says:

    Hi Billy:

    First, thanks for reading.

A couple of Joe’s favorite radio shows on are Fox, including “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig’s Saturday morning college football shows and the weekend night shows with John Fricke and Chris Landry.

Maybe it’s a regional thing, but Joe grew up in the Midwest. There, calling an African-American “a young buck” was no less an offense than if the same person was called “a coon.” It was profoundly racist.

Joe’s also heard this reference used in period movies about the Civil War.

Joe if Freeman wasn’t even the fourth-best quarterback in his conference:

    1) Why hasn’t Graham Harrell even been invited to training camp? His numbers were ridiculous cause of the spread offense but he doesn’t have a strong arm and he never took a snap under center and isn’t suited for the NFL.

    2) Why wasn’t Chase Daniels drafted? Same explanation as Harrell.

    3) Do you honestly think that 6’1 190lb Colt McCoy is going to even be a solid pro? He’s Major Applewhite part 2.

    4) Sam Bradford plays for a team that has better talent then every team they play in the Big 12 except for UT. Look at their recruiting classes compared to K States. Compare how many people were drafted from OU over the last 3 years verse how many were drafted from KSU. Look at the size of their offensive lines. For god sakes Phil Loadholt on OU was roughly the size of two K State OLineman

The fact of the matter is that Freeman did some nice things (like carrying the team on his back to hand UT their only loss his freshman year, beating them again his soph year) but to say its his fault for not overcoming a defense that gave up 40-50 some odd points a game is completely unfair, football is a team game. Sorry Joe but no matter how many times you say it I don’t buy theory that he alone should have overcame all their programs faults.

FYI I live in Dallas where the Big 12 is the conference everyone talks about so I feel like I have a better frame of reference then most.

Bottomline is I trust the opinions of the Bucs front office and other NFL types such as Gil Brandt more then that of a fan site.

PS – the racist comment is asinine. I’ve lived in the South and the Midwest; calling a 22 year old a young buck is an accurate description of his age. If he called him “boy” I might agree with you but he didn’t.
