Phase II: Coaching Over Culture Change

May 31st, 2013

TCSchianolinebackersJoe has picked up a theme pulsating through the minds of several returning Buccaneers: the New Schiano Order is flexing its coaching muscles like never before.

Last year was very much about regime change and culture change, as Davin Joseph put it, ditching “country club” life under Raheem Morris. But now players are seeing that it’s all about coaching. The Schiano way has been established, and players returned for 2013 with the infinite Schiano rules and processes mastered, and their bodies in great shape.

Donald Penn summed it up well for Joe this week.

“It’s a little bit easier on Coach Schiano because he doesn’t have to really push his way because we already learned it last year so now it’s just a lot of, you know, coaching football now. Helping guys get better instead of trying to coach what he wants to get done.”

“Last year we were all looking around, blind-eyed trying to see what he wanted. Now we know what he wants and we’re trying to get everybody going and to get everybody to follow the lead.”

Penn also emphasized that the veterans are leading newcomers so they can adapt quickly to details.

Joe’s not sure what this will mean, but it should mean that the 2013 edition of the Bucs really has no excuses. The talent is here, everyone knows what to do, and the coaches can focus on their craft.

    Well said.

The talent level alone makes the minimum expectation for this team to be ten wins. Anything less and I believe most will feel it was a disappointing season. (I certainly will.)

Health is really the only thing that can hurt this team at this point. If we suffer too many significant injuries (again) then we will most likely struggle again.

    @West Coast,

Was going to say the same damn thing, NO EXCUSES!

Haven’t been this excited abut the Bucs since Warren Sapp ended Steve Young and Jerry Rice’s careers in the season opener. Gonna be a great year. Bucs are back.

? Should there be an ‘s on Jerry Rice in that sentence…guessing this is the wrong crowd.

Not very long till training camp and preseason. Let’s get this party started.

And, they are totally out of excuses. I like that mentality.

  6. Bobby Says:

Here….let me get it out of the way. “Yeah after finishing 4th, 3rd, 4th, blah…blah…they should be setting their goals a little higher. Maybe we can shoot for second this year and be happy with mediocrity once again. Then after Pop Star gets fired nad we get some real talent this ship will right itself.”

I think Schiano’s stamp is all over this team already, I feel we really got lucky to hire him, and it will be fun to see how the team responds in year 2, one thing about coach is he is a great teacher (much like Jon Gruden), so I don’t think it will be “toes on the line” so much this year, I think he’s leaving much of that aspect to the veterans/captains and assistants. Let’s face it, Schiano has a boat load of assistant coaches, so that frees him up to micro manage whatever area he feels is necessary.

    Bobby,

LOL, ok ok I see what you mean.

So the_buc_realist has a “glass half empty” outake on Dom’s performance.

I will say if Dominick leads the Bucs to another 5+ Game losing streak for the 3rd year in a row: He or Free better be gone!

“great teacher (much like Jon Gruden)”

Not so sure about Gruden. The only QB he had success with was Brad Johnson, & I feel thats was more about Brad than Gruden’s ‘teaching’. And, of course Gruden ran him off for the QB du jour. I give Gruden props for game planning & a decent offense, but I feel his Player selection & development was horrendous….of course that’s just me & he DID win us a Super Bowl…right man at the right time.

I agree with **Mr West Coast**

Depth on the roster is still a concern as well as how past injuries have heeled (Clayborn, Revis, Joseph, Bowers, and Nicks).

I am excited to hear COACHING will be a Focus this season. Maybe I misjudged Schiano…..MAYBE! There is still plenty of time and players available to adequately fill out competitive roster.

Winning the NFC SOUTH is a distinct Possibility. I think it would be a mistake to judge the team or players strictly by wins or losses. The 2013 Tampa Bay Buccaneers should be Judged by their QUALITY of Play.

The 2013 Record will take care of itself!! GO BUCS!

That’s funny Bobby. I don’t think the Realist “sees the glass as half empty”. I don’t think he even sees the glass.

    Ever heard of Rich Gannon?
